Uefa Champions League UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - 2017/18 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS (First leg: 0-5) Besiktas Park - Istanbul Wednesday 14 March 2018 Beşiktaş JK 18.00CET (20.00 local time) FC Bayern München Round of 16, Second leg UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE OFFICIAL SPONSORS Match background 2 Legend 6 1 Beşiktaş JK - FC Bayern München Wednesday 14 March 2018 - 18.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Besiktas Park, Istanbul Match background Barring a record comeback, Beşiktaş JK will bow out of European competition for the season as they take on FC Bayern München in their round of 16 second leg, trailing 5-0 after a chastening first game in Munich. • Thomas Müller and Robert Lewandowski both scored twice at the Fußball Arena München on 20 February, Kingsley Coman getting the other as Bayern recorded the biggest home first-leg victory in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase. • No club has ever managed to recover a five-goal first-leg deficit in UEFA competition. Four have overturned a four- goal first-leg loss: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Real Madrid CF 5-1 at home in the 1985/86 UEFA Cup third round, only to lose the return 4-0. Leixões SC (against FC La Chaux-de-Fonds, 1961/62 European Cup Winners' Cup first round) and FK Partizan (Queens Park Rangers FC, 1984/85 UEFA Cup second round) overturned 6-2 away losses with 5-0 and 4-0 home victories respectively. • FC Barcelona hold the record for the biggest first-leg deficit overturned in the UEFA Champions League era, recovering from a 4-0 away loss to Paris Saint-Germain with a 6-1 home win in last season's round of 16. • Beşiktaş became the first Turkish team to win a UEFA Champions League group, finishing top of Group G to reach the round of 16 for the first time, although they came up short against their vastly experienced opponents in Munich. • This is Bayern's 14th round of 16 tie, and the German champions – who finished second in Group B – are closing in on the quarter-finals for the seventh year in a row. • This is the only tie in the round of 16 to feature two reigning domestic champions. Previous meetings • The teams crossed paths for the only previous time in the 1997/98 group stage, both games ending in 2-0 Bayern victories. Thomas Helmer and Mario Basler got the goals in the first game in Munich. • Carsten Jancker (5) and Helmer again (31) were on target in the first half of the Istanbul fixture. • The line-ups at Istanbul's BJK İnönü Stadyumu on 26 November 1997 were: Beşiktaş: Fevzi Tuncay, Erkan Avseren, Topraktepe Serdar (Osman Üstünel 80), Alpay Özalan, Yankov, Tayfur Havutçu, Ertuğrul Sağlam, Hikmet Çapanoglu (Amokachi 62), Recep Çetin (Emre Eren 59), Lechkov, Oktay Derelioğlu. Bayern: Kahn, Kuffour, Nerlinger, Matthäus, Tarnat, Fink (Babbel 87), Hamann, Helmer, Scholl (Zickler 83), Elber, Jancker (Rizzitelli 81). • Bayern finished first in the section on 12 points, two places and six points above their eliminated Turkish rivals. • Croatian goalkeeper Marjan Mrmić was part of the Beşiktaş squad although he did not feature in either game. He is now the Turkish team's goalkeeper coach. Match background Beşiktaş • This is the first time Beşiktaş have reached the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds. Their best European Cup campaign came in 1986/87 when they got to the quarter-finals before losing 7-0 on aggregate to FC Dynamo Kyiv. • Beşiktaş won 2-1 at RB Leipzig on matchday six – their sole victory in six trips to Germany, including this first leg (D1 L4). They have now scored two goals away to Bundesliga clubs, conceding 11. • Beşiktaş were also 2-1 winners at home to Leipzig on matchday two, their first victory against German opponents at the eighth attempt (D1 L6). They scored twice and conceded 12 in those first seven matches. • Beşiktaş lost their only previous two-legged knockout tie against a German club 3-1 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund in the 1989/90 European Cup Winners' Cup first round (0-1 home, 1-2 away). • The Turkish side had their four-match winning streak at home in Europe halted by the 1-1 draw with AS Monaco FC on matchday four; they subsequently drew by the same scoreline at home to FC Porto. Beşiktaş are unbeaten in their last 12 European matches in Istanbul (W5 D7) since a 3-1 loss to Club Brugge KV in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 16. That is the sole reverse in their last 20 European home games (W10 D9). • Beşiktaş drew all three home games in last season's group stage, and have drawn six of their last seven Istanbul fixtures in the UEFA Champions League, qualifying included. The defeat of Leipzig and the 3-1 third qualifying round win against Feyenoord in August 2014 are their only home victories in their last 11 matches in this competition (D6 L3), again including qualifying – although they are unbeaten in their last eight such fixtures in Istanbul. 2 Beşiktaş JK - FC Bayern München Wednesday 14 March 2018 - 18.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Besiktas Park, Istanbul • Beşiktaş have won only five of the 22 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the away first leg, most recently against Liverpool FC in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 32 (0-1 away, 1-0 home, 5-4 penalties). They have never overturned more than a single-goal away defeat in the home second leg. • Beşiktaş's record in UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L1: 6-7 v Olympique Lyonnais, 2016/17 UEFA Europa League quarter-final 5-4 v Liverpool FC, 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 32 Bayern • Bayern's round of 16 record is W10 L3. Having won the last six, they have not lost at this stage since an away-goals defeat at the hands of FC Internazionale Milano in 2010/11. • Twelve months ago Bayern overcame Arsenal FC 10-2 on aggregate at this stage, winning 5-1 both home and away. After the first leg of this tie, they have scored a remarkable 28 goals in their last six round of 16 matches. • Their 1997 games with Beşiktaş aside, Bayern's only other contests against Turkish opposition came in the 1972/73 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round. Then they drew 1-1 in the away first leg with Galatasaray AŞ before easing to a 6-0 second-leg success in Munich; Gerd Müller scored three goals across the tie. • Beaten 3-0 at eventual Group B winners Paris Saint-Germain on matchday two, prompting the departure of coach Carlo Ancelotti, Bayern's subsequent 2-1 wins at both Celtic FC and RSC Anderlecht mean they have recorded four victories in their last 11 European away games – with five losses. • Under Ancelotti, Bayern came second in their group behind Club Atlético de Madrid in 2016/17 – the first time they had failed to win their section since 2009/10, and repeated this season. • Bayern have recorded home first-leg victories 51 times in UEFA competition and have triumphed in all but eight ties, including the last 11. When winning 5-0 at home first they have won both ties on aggregate; their record in those second-leg matches is W1 D1. The last time they won a home leg 5-0 was in the 1986/87 European Champion Clubs' Cup quarter-final against RSC Anderlecht (2-2 away). • Bayern's penalty shoot-out record in UEFA competition is W5 L1: 5-4 v Chelsea FC, 2013 UEFA Super Cup 3-4 v Chelsea FC, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League final 3-1 v Real Madrid CF, 2011/12 UEFA Champions League semi-final 5-4 v Valencia CF, 2000/01 UEFA Champions League final 9-8 v PAOK FC, 1983/84 UEFA Cup second round 4-3 v Åtvidabergs FF, 1973/74 European Cup first round Coach and player links • Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes scored twice in West Germany's 5-0 away win against Turkey on 20 December 1975 at the İnönü Stadium, Beşiktaş' home before it was renovated; it now known as Beşiktaş Park. Heynckes also featured in a 1972 UEFA European Championship qualifier against Turkey on 25 April 1971, West Germany winning 3-0. • Beşiktaş coach Şenol Güneş encountered West Germany in three UEFA European Championship qualifiers during his time as a goalkeeper. He kept a clean sheet in Turkey's goalless draw in Izmir on 1 April 1979, and suffered a 2-0 away defeat that December. The nations met again in the preliminaries for the 1984 UEFA European Championship, Turkey losing 3-0 in April 1983. • Beşiktaş midfielder Tolgay Arslan was born in Paderborn in Germany. • Corentin Tolisso scored in the first leg and converted in the second-leg shoot-out as Olympique Lyonnais beat Beşiktaş on penalties in last season's UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. • Ricardo Quaresma's two goals helped FC Porto to a 3-1 first-leg victory against Bayern in the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals; the German club went through after a 6-1 win in Munich. • Álvaro Negredo scored Manchester City FC's consolation in a 3-1 UEFA Champions League group stage loss to Bayern in 2013/14. • Talisca's goal helped SL Benfica player earn a 2-2 draw against Bayern in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg; the German side won 3-2 on aggregate. • Pepe helped Real Madrid beat Bayern in the 2014 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, having lost to the Munich outfit on penalties at the same stage two years earlier.
