  • Premier Plan: Towards 2020
TIOBRAID ÁRANN Premier Plan: Towards 2020 Réamhrá It is an honour and a privilege for me to introduce the Co Tipperary GAA Strategic Plan for 2018-2020. The original Strategic Plan, which was launched in 2011, was an extensive document and a substantial number of goals in that document have been successfully implemented in the intervening years. This follow-on plan deals with issues most relevant to our Association in the County as we approach the end of the second decade of the 21st century. The County Chairman, Michael Bourke asked the County Development Committee in September 2016, to form a task force with a view to compiling a new Plan for the years 2018-2020. At our initial meeting, it was agreed that at the outset we needed to get the views of all the stakeholders in the County and to establish what were the issues, what were we doing well and where could we improve. In previous years this would probably involve asking all parties interested in the welfare of the GAA in Tipperary to attend a meeting or meetings, where views would be sourced. Inevitably, these meetings would attract relatively small attendances, particularly in the under 35 age category. It was decided that we would use modern technology in the form of an Online Survey as a means of ensuring that the views received would reflect the opinions of the overall GAA community in Tipperary. Using this method, we targeted Players (adult and juvenile), Club Officers (adult and juvenile clubs) and the wider GAA public and used Divisional and County Conventions, County Board meetings and the Media to spread the word.

  • 2021 GAA MEDIA GUIDE Treoirleabhar Na Meán 2021
2021 GAA MEDIA GUIDE Treoirleabhar na Meán 2021 @officialgaa 2021 GAA Media Guide - Teachtaireacht ón Uachtaráin Ba mhaith liom fáilte a chur romhaibh go léir ar ais chuig ár gcluichí The last 14 months have come as a challenge to us all and while we have some distance to travel before we can once again look forward to big games with full stadiums, there are green shoots ahead of us. Who could have known in mid-March last year when we took the decision to shut our activities down, that the Covid challenge would still be front and centre as the summer of 2021 approaches? The best of the GAA shone as we grappled with profound changes to our lives and the supports provided by our club and county network to those who needed them most was both heartening and reassuring. Our games when they returned were a welcome tonic. The club championships and all of the activity that preceded them helped breathe life back into communities right across the GAA family. Similarly, in the darkest days of winter the inter-county games provided us with a focal point and a welcome distraction as we grew accustomed to supporting our players and teams from afar. In the coming weeks, the Allianz League games will come thick and fast and the interest and excitement will follow. We have shown flexibility in organising our competitions, most notably in football where again a straight knockout approach will apply. I would like to acknowledge the buy-in from everyone concerned in helping to make both last year and this season work, and I have no doubt that the entertainment value and profile of the games will be as high as ever.

    O. 330*? NUI MAYNOOTH Oilscói] na héireanrt Mä Nuad THE ROLE OF THE G.A.A. IN CREATING, MAINTAINING AND REINFORCING SENSES OF PLACE AND IDENTITY by JOHN KEANE Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the M.A. (Geographical Analysis), Department of Geography, National University of Ireland, Maynooth Supervisor of Research: Prof. Paddy Duffy 2001 Abstract What we have here is a tentative attempt to investigate the role the G. A. A. plays in creating, reinforcing and maintaining senses o f place in Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary. The G.A.A. itself is an organisation o f over one million members, its strength comes from the two opposite notions o f rivalry and comradery. It is this rivalry that is the core o f identity and sense ofplace in areas where hurling and the G.A.A. are strong. The study indicates that hurling and the hurling club reinforces the boundaries geographers place around places, creating an inside and an outside - a "them " and "us". Senses ofplace if anything are stronger for players involved now than for those o f the past in these times o f time-space compression, the links with home are strengthening. Even the space in which games are played takes on a symbolic importance as a focal point for the community. Contrast this to the urban clubs, where no parish rule exists and essentially no sense o f place. Thus the role the local G.A.A. club plays in creating, maintaining and reinforcing senses o f place becomes more obvious. Foreword My name is John Keane.

  • Tom Milne, Lorrha & London
THE LAMP Tom Milne, Lorrha & London By Seamus King London-based Lorrha native Tom Milne was honoured by the Tipperary GAA County Board for the second time last year after he already received an award at the Tipperary GAA Corporate Lunch fund-raising function in the InterContinental Hotel in London’s West End in May 2017. After years of welcoming and hosting so many Irish visitors, including many victorious Tipperary teams, along with many other exiles in London there is no doubt that Tom Milne has truly earned all these well-deserved accolades. While it may be possible to take the man out of Tipperary, Tom has certainly stood the test of time after spending nearly sixty years ‘across the pond’ that it is just impossible to take the ‘Tipperary’ out of this man! A popular, colourful and habitually jovial figure in so many strands of Irish community life since he first arrived in London in the early 60s, Tom’s main interest away from his family and professional commitments in the licensing trade is his unstinting love of his native county. That fact has also been mainly responsible for making Tom a leading figurehead and stalwart in the London Tipperary Association since the early 70s. Serving the London Tipperary Association in a number of roles from Vice-Chairman to his current status as Life President Tom along with his great friend and Drangan native, Johnny Whyte, has hosted and ‘rubbed shoulders’ with some of the greatest figures in Tipperary GAA history including the late John Doyle, Babs Keating, Nicky English and Eoin Kelly right up to some of the members of the current playing squad.
