From the Desk of the President Fellow Rangers: Well, spring has finally sprung! I don’t know about you, but those of us here in Kansas had a mighty rough winter. It shaped up to be the coldest, snowiest winters in this century and possibly since 1979. But all that just prepared the way for a great 2019. First up on the plate for this spring is the 1st Division Combat Officers’ Dinner at Junction City on 27 April. Bob Hahn and I plan to run a great CP for those attending this year. That event will be followed by a number of commemorations focusing on various aspects of the 16th Infantry Regiment’s history. On 18 May, there will be a dedication of a stone tablet erected by the city of Bridport, England, which will commemorate the men of the 2nd Battalion who billeted there in 1943-44 before D-Day. The Association is contributing to the financing of that tablet. There will be a large exhibit of the Steve Clay regiment’s stay there at the West Bay Discovery Centre in Bridport from April to June. There is a similar exhibit being developed by the British Imperial War Museum in London although it encompasses more than just the 16th Infantry. It does, however, include a centerpiece exhibit of recordings of live interviews with five 16th Infantrymen who participated in the invasion to include John Finke, Ed Wozenski, Eston White, and Al Smith. The Association provided the Imperial War Museum and Bridport with a series of images and documents to support their efforts. All of the aforementioned, of course, are commemorating the regiment’s 75th D-Day Anniversary. As mentioned in my note last time, On 14 June we will commemorate Merle Hay with a plaque in Glidden, IA. Semper Paratus! Always Ready! Steven E. Clay President Dagwood Dispatches 2 April 2019 From the Desk of the Honorary Colonel Dear Past and Present Rangers, I hope this update finds everyone well as we settle into an activity-filled 2019. The Regiment continues to successfully move forward as our “Iron Rangers,” led by Lieutenant Colonel Drew Conover, excel in all that they do. At the time of this writing, they forge the standard for others to admire and attain while deployed in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve in Europe. You can follow and interact with them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/IronRangers/ Our Regiment has a truly storied past as the most decorated in our Army. The valorous feats of individuals, teams, squads, platoons, companies, and battalions have earned that recognition for our Regiment. As the Honorary Colonel, I possess great pride in our Regiment’s achievements. With that said, my concern of continued “hard feelings” between our various “stand-alone” unit organizations Ralph Kauzlarich remains. The ongoing “infighting” prevents our past Regimental heroes from securing the recognition they very much deserve as Distinguished Members of the Regiment. I ask that all differences be put aside for the sake of our Regiment, and that we proactively work with one another to ensure future DMOR nominations are submitted in a timely manner. Regarding our Class of 2019 Distinguished and Honorary Members of the Regiment, the Honorary Sergeant Major and I just requested that eight Distinguished and five Honorary Members be added to our 16th Infantry Regimental Rolls, via the “Big Red One” Commanding General to the Fort Benning Chief of Infantry. Like last year, I ask that you visit www.1stid.org/membership/annual-reunion/ to learn about what again will be another phenomenal “Big Red One” event. I challenge each of you to attend. In closing, thanks for what you do! There is no greater Regiment than ours and it is all because of people like you. God Bless & Semper Paratus! Ralph L.
