Try Something New at The Steel Yard The Steel Yard, located in the industrial valley of Providence, allows aspiring artists or anyone who wants to learn something new to take classes in many different art and technical programs as a way of fulfilling its goal: to create a community where individuals can practice arts with others. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the associate director, Islay Taylor, and the communications and events manager, Chris Dalpe. Islay (pronounced Eye-Lah), is in charge of working with the class instructors, students and professional artists, and she also runs the educational portion of the yard and does job training. Chris handles public projects and The Steel Yard’s website and social media, and is the ideal person to tell the story of the Yard’s history. The Steel Yard consists of a 3.8-acre courtyard used as a venue for events and available to artists who want to use it. It also has open studios, and anyone who takes a course gets access to them. Artists are encouraged to join the residency program where they can strengthen their practices. In order to make all these resources available to a variety of people, scholarships are offered to those who are interested in taking a course. Through its public projects, The Steel Yard collaborates with artists to create public sculptures that are functional and interesting to look at. Public projects allow art to be intertwined with everyday life. The sculptures range from bike racks to trash cans to benches. Some of these public projects can be seen in North Kingstown or Providence.

Our Teory Pressbook BIO$$ OUR THEORY is a French rock/post-hardcore band that was born in 2011 from the minds of Bastien Berhault (singer) and Mehdi Major (guitar/vocals). They were joined later by Damien Bauthamy (guitar, ex-Borderline), Guillaume Cellarius (Drums) and Yoann Andrieux (bass). Our Theory has for mission to give a kick to the french music scene with a mix of tension and restlessness that is characteristic of post hardcore, along with its intensive melodies. With a pure, melodic and deep voice from their singer, strong rhythms and intensive riffs, they create an intensive tension on each of their tracks. Shortly after getting together, they were getting noticed in the scene and their success keeps growing day after day! With their videos for The Devil and The Storm, they smash statistics and prove that they have their place among the international music scene. Stage wise, the band already had the chance to play in France and Europe and share the stage with bands such as Young Guns, Memphis May Fire, Escape The Fate, There For Tomorrow, Eyes Set To Kill, Of Mice & Men, Devil Sold His Soul and Closure in Moscow. • Ecological Models of Musical Structure in Pop-Rock, 1950–2019
Ecological Models of Musical Structure in Pop-rock, 1950–2019 Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Nicholas J. Shea, M.A., B.Ed. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee: Anna Gawboy, Advisor and Dissertation Co-Advisor Nicole Biamonte, Dissertation Co-Advisor Daniel Shanahan David Clampitt Copyright by Nicholas J. Shea 2020 Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between guitar performance and the functional components of musical organization in popular-music songs from 1954 to 2019. Under an ecological theory of affordances, three distinct interdisciplinary approaches are employed: empirical analyses of two stylistically contrasting databases of popular-music song transcriptions, a motion-capture study of performances by practicing musicians local to Columbus, Ohio, and close readings of works performed and/or composed by popular- music guitarists. Each offers gestural analyses that provide an alternative to the object- oriented approach of standard popular-music analysis, as well as clarification on issues related to style, such as the socially determined differences between “pop” and “rock” music. ii Dedication To Anna Gawboy, who is always in my corner. iii Acknowledgments Here I face the nearly insurmountable task of thanking those who have helped to develop this research. Even as all written and analytical content in this document is my own, I cannot deny the incredible value collaboration has brought to this inherently interdisciplinary study. I am extremely fortunate to have a small team of individuals on which I can rely for mentorship and support and whose research backgrounds contribute greatly to the domains of this document.
