The City University London Law Society Caters Well for Its Members Who Have a Diverse Range of Interests
CITY UNIVERSITY LONDON LAW SOCIETY The City University London Law Society caters well for its members who have a diverse range of interests; be it the socials (including the Christmas boat party which has sold out in the last two years), epic cinema screenings, lively debates, mooting competitions, pro-bono/voluntary activities and excellent careers events. This year the law society is hoping to stage more sporting activities between its members and law society members in other Universities in response to widening interest. As law students ourselves we appreciate that reading law at university is not a walk in the park and so the City University London Law Society endeavours to support students in every aspect of their life as a law student. Most people seek advice from those closest to them and those who have been through similar experiences in their own lives as students. We therefore take very seriously the importance of hosting events where students can get to know one another. There will be a number of day and evening activities at the beginning of term, but also throughout the academic year, enabling new students to make and build upon lasting relationships. Without a doubt students get far more out of the society than they put in, and so we encourage them all to become involved. The law society works very hard to provide students with the type of events that they are interested in, we just ask that they make sure they come to events once they have signed up and to keep us constantly informed about the type of events that they wish to participate in. -

The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826. -

The Many Panics of 1837 People, Politics, and the Creation of a Transatlantic Financial Crisis In the spring of 1837, people panicked as financial and economic uncer- tainty spread within and between New York, New Orleans, and London. Although the period of panic would dramatically influence political, cultural, and social history, those who panicked sought to erase from history their experiences of one of America’s worst early financial crises. The Many Panics of 1837 reconstructs the period between March and May 1837 in order to make arguments about the national boundaries of history, the role of information in the economy, the personal and local nature of national and international events, the origins and dissemination of economic ideas, and most importantly, what actually happened in 1837. This riveting transatlantic cultural history, based on archival research on two continents, reveals how people transformed their experiences of financial crisis into the “Panic of 1837,” a single event that would serve as a turning point in American history and an early inspiration for business cycle theory. Jessica M. Lepler is an assistant professor of history at the University of New Hampshire. The Society of American Historians awarded her Brandeis University doctoral dissertation, “1837: Anatomy of a Panic,” the 2008 Allan Nevins Prize. She has been the recipient of a Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship from the American Antiquarian Society, a Dissertation Fellowship from the Library Company of Philadelphia’s Program in Early American Economy and Society, a John E.
