But in Paul Howes CDS it is said that Dusty's version was recorded before Barbra Acklin's, but released after that one. And no indication that Dusty penned the lyrics. I'm a little confused, and wonder is there any referance to confirm the song's origin of lyrics to Dusty ? Re: Soulful Strut / Am I The Same Girl by Brian Posted: Mon Nov 12, 2012 8:42 am The song was written by Eugene Record (producer of many hits for The Chi-lites) along with Sonny Sanders. It was first recorded by Barbara Acklin (who was Eugene's wife) in September 1968 but not issued immediately. The producer George Davis took the track, removed Barbara's voice and replaced it with a piano solo by Floyd Morris. It was issued in the USA in November 68 going on to reach the US top 3 pop. It was a number onerecord in Canada. It was credited to Young Holt Unlimited (which in fact were the session musicians). Barbara's version was then issued in February 1969, but only reached number 79 in the US pop chart (it did better in the R&B charts).

  • Windy City Harmony: the Calvaes, Blenders and Accents
South Side Harmony in the Windy City: The Calvaes, Blenders & Accents Stories by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner and Val Shively Group Harmony on Chicago’s South Side The exact boundaries of Chicago’s South Side have changed over the years and vary slightly according to who you ask. In general, when someone talks about the South Side they’re referring to the area of the city south of the Loop. During the first half of the Twentieth Century, hun- dreds of thousands of African-Americans migrated from the Deep South to Chicago, making the South Side their home. The South Side has been home to Blues, Gospel and plenty of great Jazz. It’s been home to dozens of vocal groups, too, from the Soul Stirrers to the Chi-Lites. Of all the areas that have produced vocal groups, the Chicago’s South Side rates among the highest. A list of 1950’s groups from this fertile area would include the El Dorados, Five Chances, Five Ech- oes, Flamingos, Five Thrills, Orchids, Dukays, Sheppards, Pastels, Fortunes, Maples, Danderliers, Moroccos, Magnifi- cents, Rip Chords, Calvaes, Four Gents, Quintones, Debo- nairs, Nobles, Belvederes and countless others. “Solly McElroy and the Moroccos, the Danderliers… They were all right here on the South Side,” recalled Chicago vocalist Zeke Brown. “I knew the El Dorados. And the Five Chances. I grew up with these guys. We all used to meet and we’d be at shows. And Tommy Hunt of the Echoes. Tommy Hunt is the one who showed us how to do routines.

DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.
