  • The Shiromani Akali Dal and Emerging Ideological Cleavages in Contemporary Sikh Politics in Punjab: Integrative Regionalism Versus Exclusivist Ethnonationalism
143 Jugdep Chima: Ideological Cleavages in Sikh Politics The Shiromani Akali Dal and Emerging Ideological Cleavages in Contemporary Sikh Politics in Punjab: Integrative Regionalism versus Exclusivist Ethnonationalism Jugdep Singh Chima Hiram College, USA ________________________________________________________________ This article describes the emerging ideological cleavages in contemporary Sikh politics, and attempts to answer why the Shiromani Akali Dal has taken a moderate stance on Sikh ethnic issues and in its public discourse in the post-militancy era? I put forward a descriptive argument that rhetorical/ideological cleavages in contemporary Sikh politics in Punjab can be differentiated into two largely contrasting poles. The first is the dominant Akali Dal (Badal) which claims to be the main leadership of the Sikh community, based on its majority in the SGPC and its ability to form coalition majorities in the state assembly in Punjab. The second pole is an array of other, often internally fractionalized, Sikh political and religious organizations, whose claim for community leadership is based on the espousal of aggressive Sikh ethnonationalism and purist religious identity. The “unity” of this second pole within Sikh politics is not organizational, but rather, is an ideological commitment to Sikh ethnonationalism and political opposition to the moderate Shiromani Akali Dal. The result of these two contrasting “poles” is an interesting ethno-political dilemma in which the Akali Dal has pragmatic electoral success in democratic elections

  • Operation Blue Star 2014
Operation Blue Star Hamid Hussain June 5, 2014 is the thirty year anniversary of the Indian army operation to clear militants from the Sikh religion’s holiest temple in Amritsar. This was the culmination of chain of events simmering for several years. In late 1970s, conflict between center and Punjab, internal power struggle among Sikh political elite, poor economic conditions of rural Punjab and assertion of Nirankaris (a sect of Sikhism considered heretic by orthodox Sikhs) resulted in rapid escalation of violence in Punjab. In early 1980s, Sikh agitation took an ugly turn and a group of militant Sikhs under the leadership of a charismatic leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale upped the ante. In December 1983, fearing arrest, Bhindranwala with few hundred armed supporters moved into the Golden Temple complex. Armed militants occupied many buildings of the Golden temple complex. Many wanted militants found refuge in the temple and in April 1983, in an audacious move militant shot dead Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Jullundhar range Avtar Singh Atwal inside the temple. Several police officers including Inspector Bicchu Ram and Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Gurbachan Singh were also assassinated by militants. In June 1984, Indian government decided to send troops to the Golden Temple complex to clear it out of militants. After a bloody fight, temple was cleared resulting in heavy casualties. Count Down to Conflict Prime Minister Indira Ghandi, two Sikhs in Delhi; President Giani Zail Singh and Union Home Minister Buta Singh, Punjab Chief Minister Darbara Singh, Akali Dal leaders Harchand Singh Longwal and Parkash Singh Badal, Gurcharan Singh Tohra; head of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC); an organization responsible for the administration of Sikh houses of worship and militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale were key players in this conflict.

Vol. 6 No. 1 This article is from *Sikh Research Journal*, the online peer-reviewed journal of Sikh and Punjabi Studies * Sikh Research Journal *Vol. 6. No. 1. Published: Spring 2021 http://sikhresearchjournal.org http://sikhfoundation.org Sikh Research Journal, Vol. 6 No. 1 50 The Shadows of Empire: British Imperial and Sikh History on the Streets of Westminster, London Ranveer (Rav) Singh Founder, A Little History of the Sikhs Abstract This paper presents field and desk research to give a Sikh perspective on the memorials of British imperialists and Sikhs of the Indian Army found in the City of Westminster, a borough located in Central London, United Kingdom. Given the concentration of sites of national importance and heritage, the streets of Westminster contain a wealth of memorials, artefacts and events which also are connected to Sikh political and military history, the region of Punjab and the Sikh people. The individuals commemorated on the streets of Westminster represent a palpable history of the Sikhs and the Kingdom of Lahore, the East India Company in the Anglo- Sikh Wars and the Indian uprising of 1857, and soldiers and officers serving in the Indian Army in the two World Wars and conflicts in the first half of the 20th century. Keywords: Sikh heritage, Westminster, East India Company, British empire, Indian army Introduction During the mid-1990s Sikh heritage in the UK began to emerge as an area of greater research for a small number of organizations, primarily, the Anglo-Sikh Heritage Trail (ASHT), Sikh Heritage Association Warwick & Leamington (SHAWL) and the UK Panjab Heritage Association (UKPHA, www.ukpha.org).

  • How Avoiding the Religion–Politics Divide Plays out in Sikh Politics
religions Article How Avoiding the Religion–Politics Divide Plays out in Sikh Politics Pashaura Singh Department of Religious Studies, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521, USA; [email protected] Received: 15 March 2019; Accepted: 24 April 2019; Published: 28 April 2019 Abstract: This article looks at the intersection of religion and politics in the evolution of the Sikh tradition in the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial periods in the Indian subcontinent. The Sikh notion of sovereignty is at the heart of the intersection of religious and secular domains, and this relationship is examined empirically and theoretically. In particular, the conception of m¯ır¯ı-p¯ır¯ı is presented as a possible explanation for understanding the ‘new developments’ in contemporary Sikh politics in India. Keywords: Akal Takhat; British Raj; halem¯ı raj;¯ Khalsa; m¯ır¯ı-p¯ır¯ı; religion and politics; secularism; SGPC; Akali Dal; Punjab 1. Introduction The purpose of this essay is to look at the changing dynamics of the intersection of religion and politics at various historical junctures in the evolution of the Sikh tradition, thereby understanding the more recent developments in Sikh politics in the Punjab. Notably, the distinction between the public and private spheres did not exist in the early Sikh tradition prior to the colonial rule of the early 19th century. The Sikh Gurus mediated the two spaces as one. For them and for societies of that time in India, this division did not exist. This is the same division as between religion and politics, or between church and state. In recent studies, “religion” is not considered simply a belief system or a purely interior impulse secreted away in the human soul and limited to the private sphere, or an institutional force separable from other non-religious or secular forces in the public domain.

HOW EUROPE IS INDEBTED TO THE SIKHS ? BHUPINDER SINGH HOLLAND With an introduction by Dr Harjinder Singh Dilgeer SIKH UNIVERSITY PRESS How Europe is Indebted To The Sikhs ? By BHUPINDER SINGH HOLLAND ISBN 2-930247-12-6 FOR BIBI SURJIT KAUR (MYMOTHER) & S. NIRMAL SINGH (MY BROTHER) This book is dedicated to my mother who was a pious, religious, noble and humane lady; who was a dedicated Sikh and a role model for every Sikh; and my brother S. Nirmal Singh who laid his life valiantly fighting against armed robbers in Seattle (USA) and saved the lives of his son and a friend. He had learnt this Sikh tradition from Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib who had sacrificed his life so that others may enjoy freedom. Acknowledgement It occurred to me in April 1998 that the tercentenary celebrations of the formation of the Order of Khalsa should be held across Europe. It would be a great honor to witness such a momentous occassion during my life. The first century of the Khalsa passed under the Mugals as it struggled to establish the Khalsa Raj in northern India after defeating the Mugals and stopping and pushing invaders like Ahmed Shah Abdali to the other side of the Kheber Pass. Later, Maharaja Ranjit Singh managed to establish the Sikh kingdom from the river Satluj to the Indus. The second century was passed under the British, as the Punjab was annexed by them through false means after the Anglo-Sikh Wars, and Sikhs struggled to regain their lost sovereignity. It was my opinion that the best celebration would be to remember martyrs of the 20th century.
