  • Chakravyuh Was an Impregnable Army Formation Resorted to by the Kaurva Commander-In- Chief, Daronachariya, Common Teacher of Both Pandavas and Kauravas
Chakravyuh was an impregnable army formation resorted to by the Kaurva Commander-in- Chief, Daronachariya, common teacher of both Pandavas and Kauravas. Abhimanyu (16), the younger son of Arjun and the nephew of the Kauravas, was isolated and killed by seven opposing knights by trapping him in this particularly contrived military manoeuvre. It was a formation which none other than Arjun and his son could penetrate and only Arjun knew how to destroy it. Arjun was lured far away from the scene by deception. At the time of killing, young Abhimanyu was unarmed. It was against the earlier settled laws of war and customs of chivalry prevalent in the age, to kill an unarmed warrior. The highest ranking knights owing allegiance to forces of evil, ganged up to fight and to kill him though only one of them could have legitimately engaged him, and that only when he was armed. All Indian political parties have erected a Chakravyuh around the Sikhs who have common ancestors with other Indians. They are doing this to the Sikhs behind the facade (Chakravyuh) of secular, democratic state with written constitution. The object is also the same - to gain exclusive, unlimited political power over all other nations inhabiting the sub-continent. • The Shiromani Akali Dal and Emerging Ideological Cleavages in Contemporary Sikh Politics in Punjab: Integrative Regionalism Versus Exclusivist Ethnonationalism
143 Jugdep Chima: Ideological Cleavages in Sikh Politics The Shiromani Akali Dal and Emerging Ideological Cleavages in Contemporary Sikh Politics in Punjab: Integrative Regionalism versus Exclusivist Ethnonationalism Jugdep Singh Chima Hiram College, USA ________________________________________________________________ This article describes the emerging ideological cleavages in contemporary Sikh politics, and attempts to answer why the Shiromani Akali Dal has taken a moderate stance on Sikh ethnic issues and in its public discourse in the post-militancy era? I put forward a descriptive argument that rhetorical/ideological cleavages in contemporary Sikh politics in Punjab can be differentiated into two largely contrasting poles. The first is the dominant Akali Dal (Badal) which claims to be the main leadership of the Sikh community, based on its majority in the SGPC and its ability to form coalition majorities in the state assembly in Punjab. The second pole is an array of other, often internally fractionalized, Sikh political and religious organizations, whose claim for community leadership is based on the espousal of aggressive Sikh ethnonationalism and purist religious identity. The “unity” of this second pole within Sikh politics is not organizational, but rather, is an ideological commitment to Sikh ethnonationalism and political opposition to the moderate Shiromani Akali Dal. The result of these two contrasting “poles” is an interesting ethno-political dilemma in which the Akali Dal has pragmatic electoral success in democratic elections

Country Advice India India – IND39966 – Nai/Rai/Jatt Sikh Castes – Inter-Caste Couples – Relocation – Tracing of Individuals 4 April 2012 1. Do the Nai Sikh, Rai Sikh, and Jatt Sikh castes exist? If so, please provide general information on each, including whether Nai Sikh and Rai Sikh are ever described as being Backward Classes or Other Backward Classes? Yes, Nai Sikh, Rai Sikh and Jatt (also Jat) Sikh castes exist. Nai Nai caste is a Hindu caste.1 According to comments posted on a discussion forum on the website India Culture, which the author claims are from a book published in 1970 titled Sikhs by A.H. Bingley, „Nai Sikh‟ describes those members of the Nai caste who follow the Sikh religion.2 Traditionally, Nais are associated with hairdressing, cutting nails, shaving etc., and are described in People of India: Punjab as being “just above the Scheduled Castes” but nonetheless a „low caste‟.3 Nai caste is listed as an Other Backward Class (OBC), according to the central list of OBCs for the State of Punjab.4 Rai Sikh The Rai Sikh caste is associated with the Mahatam and Sirkiband Hindu castes.5 One report was found in which Sirkiband is described as being synonymous with Rai Sikh.6 This seems to be supported by the existence of an All-India Rai Sikh, Mahatma and Sirkiband Welfare Association.7 1 Bansal, IJ.S. and Singh, S. ed. (2003), People of India: Punjab, Vol. 37, p.330. 2 „Facts about Nai Sikhs‟ (2003), India Culture.net website, 2 May http://indiaculture.net/talk/messages/128/9578.html?1051875864 – Accessed 15 March 2012.

  • Operation Blue Star 2014
Operation Blue Star Hamid Hussain June 5, 2014 is the thirty year anniversary of the Indian army operation to clear militants from the Sikh religion’s holiest temple in Amritsar. This was the culmination of chain of events simmering for several years. In late 1970s, conflict between center and Punjab, internal power struggle among Sikh political elite, poor economic conditions of rural Punjab and assertion of Nirankaris (a sect of Sikhism considered heretic by orthodox Sikhs) resulted in rapid escalation of violence in Punjab. In early 1980s, Sikh agitation took an ugly turn and a group of militant Sikhs under the leadership of a charismatic leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale upped the ante. In December 1983, fearing arrest, Bhindranwala with few hundred armed supporters moved into the Golden Temple complex. Armed militants occupied many buildings of the Golden temple complex. Many wanted militants found refuge in the temple and in April 1983, in an audacious move militant shot dead Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Jullundhar range Avtar Singh Atwal inside the temple. Several police officers including Inspector Bicchu Ram and Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) Gurbachan Singh were also assassinated by militants. In June 1984, Indian government decided to send troops to the Golden Temple complex to clear it out of militants. After a bloody fight, temple was cleared resulting in heavy casualties. Count Down to Conflict Prime Minister Indira Ghandi, two Sikhs in Delhi; President Giani Zail Singh and Union Home Minister Buta Singh, Punjab Chief Minister Darbara Singh, Akali Dal leaders Harchand Singh Longwal and Parkash Singh Badal, Gurcharan Singh Tohra; head of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC); an organization responsible for the administration of Sikh houses of worship and militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale were key players in this conflict.
