MITES-JOURNAL - POST-CONVENTION 2009 1 www.mites.cc - POST-CONVENTION 2009 A Note From The MITES President Marvin Gage The first thing I would like to do is to thank Greg Meyers for providing all of us with a great convention. There were many exceptional sessions offered for the members this year and I hope everyone took full advantage of these sessions. I would also like to thank the presenters for sharing their knowledge with their peers. As most of you should already know, MITES is a completely volunteer organization with no one getting paid a penny. MITES is not the executive board but all of its members combined that makeup this organization. Like our nation we have many of the same things going on with our organization and its members. Programs are closing and teachers are losing jobs. It doesn’t appear changes are coming soon enough. It’s not the weakest programs being closed or the poorest teachers losing their jobs, many of these programs have been around for a long time. I talked with some of those who received their pink slip this spring and couldn’t help but think about how low my numbers are for next year. With the push for more students taking AP classes and everyone going to college we are being squeezed out of the equation. The good news is there are some legislators who feel that we are a critical part of the equation. This would not be possible without the hard work of our MITES members who have been working with these legislators. This past year many members have been involved with committees working on IX/TX certification, Industrial Technology Standards, and a bill by Representative Joel Sheltrown, just to mention some of the things going on. These members are all volunteers who give up their time and money to attend these meetings around the state. They are working hard to help keep Industrial Technology programs around for many more years. These moves are not to guarantee any one of us a job in the future but to help guarantee our students a future. Not everyone can give their time or money to serve on a committee. Some are involved with family, church, or getting ready for retirement. The only thing that can be expected from each of us is to develop and maintain the best program we can to help prepare our students for the 21st Century. I would like to thank all of you who serve in some capacity with MITES. It’s all the volunteers and dedicated professionals who care about kids and their futures who help make this the GREAT organization it is. Marvin Gage President Marvin Gage receives the President president’s gavel from past-president Abe Zain.
