ACCOBAMS-MOP3/2007/Res.3.11 RESOLUTION 3.11 CONSERVATION PLAN FOR BLACK SEA CETACEANS The Meeting of the Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans of the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea and contiguous Atlantic area: On the recommendation of the ACCOBAMS Scientific Committee, Aware that all three Black Sea cetacean species, the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and the common bottlenose dolphin (Turpsiops truncatus), experienced a dramatic decline in abundance during the twentieth century, Taking into account that the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN)-ACCOBAMS workshop on the Red List Assessment of Cetaceans in the ACCOBAMS Area (Monaco, March 2006) concluded that the Black Sea populations of the harbour porpoise, common dolphin and bottlenose dolphin are endangered, Conscious that most of the factors responsible for their decline, such as current fisheries by-catches, extensive habitat degradation and other anthropogenic impacts, pose continuous threats to the existence of cetaceans in the Black Sea and contiguous waters, represented by the Sea of Azov, the Kerch strait and the Turkish straits system (including the Bosphorus strait, the Marmara Sea and the Dardanelles straits), Convinced that the plan is an integral component of discussions on Black Sea regional and national strategies, plans, programmes and projects concerned with the protection, exploration and management of the Black Sea environment, biodiversity, living resources, marine mammals -

Freeman* Canadian Circumpolar Institute, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta T6G 2E1, Canada ABSTRACT: This paper examines the extent to which depleted whale populations have recovered (or not) and their perceived current conservation status and prognosis for continued survival, as repre- sented in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red Lists. It is concluded that current hypothetical and untested predictions of extinction risk, while in many cases drawing attention to justifiable conservation needs, may seriously undervalue the resilience of species that have evolved to live in a dynamic and ever-changing reality including cen- turies of heavy exploitation by humankind. The paper questions the appropriateness of Red Listing criteria for long-lived highly mobile ocean-dwelling species that are scarcely affected by the princi- pal threats upon terrestrial or aquatic species living in relatively restricted areas subject to habitat fragmentation and/or loss. This analysis draws attention to the problems associated with objectively assessing the conservation status of charismatic species and the value conflicts that may override evidence-based scientific conservation assessments. The dwarf sperm whale was first described by Owen in 1866. Both were considered a Illustration by Pieter A. Folkens single species until 1966. These are the only two species in the family Kogiidae. The species name for the dwarf sperm whale was changed in 1998 from ‘simus’ to ‘sima.’ Neither the pygmy nor dwarf sperm whale are kin to the true sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). At sea, these two species are virtually indistinguishable. Both species are black dorsally with a white underside. They possess a shark-like head with a narrow under-slung lower jaw and a light colored “false gill” that runs between the eye and the flipper. Small flippers are positioned far forward on the body. Pygmy sperm whales generally have between 12 and 16 (occasionally 10 to 11) pairs of needle- like teeth in the lower jaw. They can attain lengths up to 3.5 m (11.5 ft.) and weigh upwards of 410 kg (904 lbs.). A diagnostic character of this species is the low, falcate dorsal fin (less than 5% of the body length) positioned behind the midpoint on the back. Dwarf sperm whales generally have 8 to 11 (rarely up to 13) pairs of teeth in the lower jaw and can have up to 3 pairs of teeth in the upper jaw. -

April 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill FACT SHEET Fishing One of the biggest industries in the Gulf of Mexico is the fishing (commercial and recreational). More than three million (3.2 million) recreational fishers took fishing trips in the GOM in 2008, totally 24 million fishing trips. In 2008, commercial fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico harvested 1.27 million pounds of finfish and shellfish. Commercial fishermen earned $659 million in total landings revenue in 2008. Two of the largest commercial fishing operations in the Gulf of Mexico are red snapper and shrimp. Brown shrimp is the most important species in the U.S. Gulf fishery, with principal catches made from June through October. The following shrimp species are found in the Gulf of Mexico: Brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus Ives) White shrimp (Penaeus setiferus Linnaeus) Pink shrimp (Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad) Royal red shrimp (Hymenopenaeus robustus Smith) Seabobs (Xiahooeneus kroverl Heller) - INCIDENTAL BYCATCH Rock shrimp (Sicyonia brevirostris Stimpton) - INCIDENTAL BYCATCH Marine Mammals There are two resident species of large whales in the Gulf of Mexico that may occur in the area of the spill: Bryde's whales Sperm whales (endangered) Bryde's whales (pronounced Brew-duhs) are not listed as endangered or threatened, but they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Bryde's whales are baleen whales, meaning they have hair- like "teeth" in their mouths that the whales use to filter water and trap their food. A small population of Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni), the only baleen whale to commonly occur in the Gulf, inhabits the shelf break region in the northeastern Gulf. -
