Adults common to 17 m, maximum to 18 m long.Body rotund with head to 1/3 of total length;no pleats in throat; dorsal fin absent. Mostly black or dark brown, may have white splotches on chin and belly.Commonly travel in groups of less than 12 in shallow water regions. IUCN Status: Endangered. Adult males maximum to slightly over 9 m long, females to 10.7 m.Head extremely pointed with prominent me- dian ridge. The dwarf sperm whale was first described by Owen in 1866. Both were considered a Illustration by Pieter A. Folkens single species until 1966. These are the only two species in the family Kogiidae. The species name for the dwarf sperm whale was changed in 1998 from ‘simus’ to ‘sima.’ Neither the pygmy nor dwarf sperm whale are kin to the true sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). At sea, these two species are virtually indistinguishable. Both species are black dorsally with a white underside. They possess a shark-like head with a narrow under-slung lower jaw and a light colored “false gill” that runs between the eye and the flipper. Small flippers are positioned far forward on the body. Pygmy sperm whales generally have between 12 and 16 (occasionally 10 to 11) pairs of needle- like teeth in the lower jaw. They can attain lengths up to 3.5 m (11.5 ft.) and weigh upwards of 410 kg (904 lbs.). A diagnostic character of this species is the low, falcate dorsal fin (less than 5% of the body length) positioned behind the midpoint on the back. Dwarf sperm whales generally have 8 to 11 (rarely up to 13) pairs of teeth in the lower jaw and can have up to 3 pairs of teeth in the upper jaw. -

Pygmy Sperm Whale (Kogia breviceps) Image from UNCW Marine Mammal Program Taken under NOAA scientific permit #948-1692-00 Courtesy of NOAA Species Description: - Small and robust body that tapers near the fluke - Body coloration is counter-shaded, ranging from brown to - Small, low, rounded dorsal fin dark blue gray on their dorsal surface, to white to soft pink - Pointed snout, underslung and bracket-shaped pigment pattern on their ventral surface (false gill slit) make the head appear "shark-like" - Average length at physical maturity is ~ 11.5 ft (3.5 m) - Single blowhole on top of head - Average weight at physical maturity is ~ 700 – 1,100 lb - Males and females are of similar size (315 – 500 kg) Behavior: Reproduction: - Appear sluggish and slow moving - Lifespan estimated to be 23 years - Typically seen lying motionless or “logging” at the surface - Sexual maturity reached at 4-5 years - Roll or sink from view without showing flukes to initiate dive - Gestation period approximately 9 – 11 months - Usually seen as solitary animals or in groups of 6 – 7 - Newborn calves weigh ~ 110 lb (50 kg) - Average swimming speed is ~ 3 knots (1.5 m/s) - Newborn calves are ~ 3.9 ft (1.2 m) in length - May expel dark, ink-like feces to use as an escape - Calving season: March – August mechanism, much like a cephalopod Diet: - Cephalopods Threats / Conservation: (squid and octopus) - Not Endangered - Deep sea fishes - Protected underConservation/ the Marine Mammal Protection Threats: Act - Crustaceans (MMPA) in the United States (crabs and shrimp) -

Johnson2 1 Emory University 2 Michigan State University 3 University of North Carolina at Wilmington KEYWORDS Brain, dwarf sperm whale, Kogia, MRI ABSTRACT Cetacean (dolphin, whale and porpoise) brains are among the least studied mammalian brains because of the difficulty of collecting and histologically preparing such relatively rare and large specimens. Among cetaceans, there exist relatively few studies of the brain of the dwarf sperm whale (Kogia simus). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a means of observing the internal structure of the brain when traditional histological procedures are not practical. Therefore, MRI has become a critical tool in the study of the brain of cetaceans and other large species. -

April 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill FACT SHEET Fishing One of the biggest industries in the Gulf of Mexico is the fishing (commercial and recreational). More than three million (3.2 million) recreational fishers took fishing trips in the GOM in 2008, totally 24 million fishing trips. In 2008, commercial fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico harvested 1.27 million pounds of finfish and shellfish. Commercial fishermen earned $659 million in total landings revenue in 2008. Two of the largest commercial fishing operations in the Gulf of Mexico are red snapper and shrimp. Brown shrimp is the most important species in the U.S. Gulf fishery, with principal catches made from June through October. The following shrimp species are found in the Gulf of Mexico: Brown shrimp (Penaeus aztecus Ives) White shrimp (Penaeus setiferus Linnaeus) Pink shrimp (Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad) Royal red shrimp (Hymenopenaeus robustus Smith) Seabobs (Xiahooeneus kroverl Heller) - INCIDENTAL BYCATCH Rock shrimp (Sicyonia brevirostris Stimpton) - INCIDENTAL BYCATCH Marine Mammals There are two resident species of large whales in the Gulf of Mexico that may occur in the area of the spill: Bryde's whales Sperm whales (endangered) Bryde's whales (pronounced Brew-duhs) are not listed as endangered or threatened, but they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Bryde's whales are baleen whales, meaning they have hair- like "teeth" in their mouths that the whales use to filter water and trap their food. A small population of Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni), the only baleen whale to commonly occur in the Gulf, inhabits the shelf break region in the northeastern Gulf. -
