SEPTEMBER, 2017 SHOFAR 3 4 SHOFAR SEPTEMBER, 2017 Rabbi Steven Saks and Cantor Yehoshua Redfern flanked by members of the High Holiday choir. High Holy Day Greeting from Cantor Redfern Monday August 14, 2017 To all my friends at AKSE: Roberta and I want to wish all of you a wonderful, sweet, and happy New Year’s greeting. K’tivah V’chatimah Tovah: May you and your families be written and sealed by the Ribono Shel Olam: Our blessed G-d, into the Book of Life for this coming New Year 5778 Wednesday September 20, 2017. This September I will be back leading the davening as your Shaliach Tsibur, Cantor. I will be singing with our AKSE choir not only Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur but also on the First night on Selichot this September 16. I am very excited to once again be leading the davening for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and singing with the choir again and greeting all of you during the services. To conclude my High Holyday greeting I want to share with you one of my mentor’s Cantor Macy Nulman of blessed memory, sayings of the Jewish people related to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In his last book, The Encyclopedia of the Sayings of the Jewish People (Jason Aronson; Northvale, New Jersey Jerusalem 1997) Cantor Nulman’s discussion of the reason for adding in the Kaddish prayer, from Rosh Hashana through Yom Kippur, the repetition of the word “L’eayla”. L’eayla means ‘higher or “above’. Ashenazic Jewry doubles the word in every Kaddish because, in this period G-d’s exalted place is far above and beyond all hymns and blessings uttered in the world. When doubling L’eayla, the contracted form, mikol, which follows, is used instead of min kol in order to keep the number of words at twenty-eight from Yhei Shmei until B’almah. Twenty eight is the number from the Hebrew word “Koach” which means strength. The Divine full force of G-d is typified by the 28 days of the moon’s complete cycle. In popular parlance, the phrase L’eayla L’eayla, is used to describe a situation or something that is of the highest degree or exceptional. Its tonal inflection is usually said with forceful utterance or strong feeling. SEPTEMBER, 2017 SHOFAR 5 SISTERHOOD NEWS This is YOUR Sisterhood!! Make it what YOU want it to be!!
