Mishenichnas Adar, Marbim B'Simcha - "When Adar begins, we increase in joy"... We are now in the Hebrew month of Adar and we have much to be joyful about! In January we hosted a very successful Classic Rock Party. Four synagogues joined together to dance the night away in our beautifully decorated social hall (Thanks Michelle Glazier!). It was such a joyous event! Now March will be overflowing with joy. Come to hear the Megillah, enjoy yummy Hamantashen, and pick up your Mishloach Manot! Once again, thanks to the creative thinking of Sharon Berry, every AKSE member will receive Mishloach Manot. Sharon is really Ms. Purim! We have her and her helpers to thank for thousands of Hamantashen to eat and to sell, as well as the very successful Mishloach Manot fundraiser. We complete our Purim celebration with a delicious Friday night dinner prepared by our top chefs Mollie Epstein Makar and Dianne Seidel. What a great way to celebrate the holiday of Purim together at AKSE. Thank you to all these wonderful volunteers who work so hard to spread some joy! Join us at the Megillah reading on Wednesday evening, March 4th.

See you there, Sisterhood thanks Gina Schoenberg for Sylvia her contribution!

Classic Rock Party a Rocking success!!

Close to 100 people danced the night away on January 24th to Oldies but Goodies played by DJ extraordinaire Joey Z of Wired Up Entertainment. The dance floor was filled the entire night, stirring up great memories. In fact there were a lot of left over snacks because most people danced all night. What made this event so special was that, for the first time ever, four synagogues (AKSE, CBE, CBS, and TBE) teamed up to make this event a reality, resulting in attendance that spanned the entire community! It was a pleasure working together and hopefully this will continue as an annual event.

8 SHOFAR MARCH, 2015

Shalom. My name is Mara Seidel A bit about me: I am a product of A.K.S.E. Hebrew School and graduate of Wilmington Gratz Hebrew High School. I made Aliyah to Israel after completing a 5 month professional internship program called Career Israel, run through a tourism program called The Israel Experience, where I volunteered with refugees from Darfur living in .

Following that I worked as a counselor on the Career Israel program for two years, where I aided and cared for over 200 participants coming from abroad to have a meaningful Israeli experience, as I did. During that time, I started to lead educational tours for the participants, and enjoyed researching about the land of Israel and its rich history, plus the participants told me I was good at it, so I started looking into ways to learn more about Israel.

I enrolled in the Ministry of Tourism two year tour guiding course in , where I attended lectures about history, religion, archaeology, geology, flora, fauna, Zionism, architecture and weekly trips around the entire country. My classmates were a beautiful mix of Jews, Christians and Muslims from over 10 countries, complete with different life experiences and narratives. To me, this was the greatest gift I have given myself. I got to explore and learn about this incredible country inside and out. The more I learned, the more I realized how much I never knew, and the more I wanted to discover.

The reason I signed up for the course was to widen my knowledge of the land of Israel, the place I call home. And now that I have passed the licensing exam, I cannot wait to share the amazing stories and unbelievable history with others looking to discover Israel in new ways.

Just as it is in Hadassah's mission to build an empowered Jewish community with an enduring Israel, I want to contribute to that by connecting people to Israel and excite them with the magic of the land.

If you have any questions, please feel free to be in touch.

Best, Mara

Shalom all,

Please note that we will be keeping Friday evening services at 6:00 pm through April. On May 2 we will move them to 6:30 pm and this will be the time for the summer season. This is what we did last year due to multiple requests from those that come regularly.

Thanks Rabbi Saks

Please call the office at 302 762 2705 or email [email protected] and explain your situation and or transportation need. We will try and line up someone to help. WHAT'S COOKING IN YOUR KITCHEN?

We are all looking for easy, filling recipes that will warm our tummies in this freezing cold weather we are having. I know I start thinking about Passover in March and want to find recipes to cook that will help empty the cabinets. I hope we can eat what is left and not have to throw it out for Pesach. If you have any leftover pasta or rice this is a great dish to try. It is quick, easy and delicious and will help you clean out the chametz.

Veggie Fried Noodles

2 cups of cold white or brown rice or 1/2 pound of cold pasta 3 Tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil 3 eggs beaten 4 green onions thinly sliced (1/2) cup 1 small carrot, peeled and grated (if you like carrots use more) 1/2 cup frozen green peas, thawed 1/2 medium red bell pepper, finely diced (1/4 cup) (I hate pepper, so I omitted the peppers) 2 Tablespoons sesame oil 3 Tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce

Heat 1 Tablespoon oil in large skillet or wok over medium high heat, add eggs, scramble and transfer to a small bowl. Heat another Tablespoon peanut oil in wok and stir-fry vegetables until onions soften, 3-4 minutes. ***if you like grated ginger you could add some to the recipe at this point for flavor. Add scrambled eggs to the veggies and remove to reserve mixture in a bowl Heat remaining Tablespoon of peanut oil and sesame oil in wok. Fold in noodles or rice and cook, stir- ring frequently for 2-3 minutes. Add soy sauce, eggs and veggies and stir-fry breaking up eggs. Fry 3-5 minutes until completed dish is very hot.

This recipe can be altered with cubed chicken or beef, bean sprouts, water chestnuts or almonds. Check out your vegetables in cans or the vegetables in the hydrator in the refrigerator for other options like celery or bok choy. Don't forget that you can leave out the eggs if you are Vegan and you will have a dish of all vegetables in the fried rice or noodles.

This recipe came from the magazine All Recipes. There is a wonderful web site for Allrecipes.com. If you are searching for some great vegetarian recipes you might want to read the magazine Eating Well.

I just heard from a congregant, Barbara Roisman, who is looking for some interesting Vegan recipes. I thank her for the feedback on the Walnut Vegetable Stuffed Cabbage. I am so glad to hear that she and her husband tried it and enjoyed it. If anyone of you would like something special in this column, please e mail me and let me know what you are looking for and I will see what I can find in my archives for you. [email protected].

Until Next Time...... Meryl

Bring Your Shoes to Shul (1)

(1) Those shoes NOT Attached to your feet, see below

Dear AKSE members & friends of AKSE,

Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth has partnered with Community Recycling and its ShoeBox Recy- cling program. Together we are on a mission to help promote the importance of shoe recycling while raising funds for AKSE. ShoeBox Recycling is easy, engaging and rewarding for every- one involved.

Participation is simple. We are collecting gently used (or no longer used) shoes for reuse. ShoeBox Recycling collection boxes have been placed in the lobby of AKSE. Simply “Bring your Shoes to Shul” and deposit them in the collection box. As each box is filled, it will be shipped out for distribution, and AKSE receives a small fee for its efforts. All the shoes we re- cycle as a group are destined for another home. From South America to Africa to areas right here in the United States, our ShoeBox Recycling efforts will help people and communities in over 50 countries.

Our community will benefit as well. Not only will your recycled shoes help AKSE raise funds, it will also help keep these shoes out of our local landfills.

So start cleaning out your closets and start looking under your bed for gently used shoes. Eve- ry pair you recycle means shoes for those in need, extra funds for us, and less landfill waste.

If you are unable to drop your shoes off, have a large quantity of shoes for recycling, or need more information, please contact AKSE at (302) 762-2705 to make arrangements for someone to come by to pick up your donation.

Follow These Easy Steps:

Drop off your used shoes in the AKSE lobby or call (302) 762-2705 for convenient pick-up service. We ship the shoes to Community Recycling for distribution to those in need. AKSE receives a small fee. You free up some closet space and contribute to less landfill waste. Ask your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to participate. Feel good that you did a Mitzvah.
