Learning Journeys DVD Night 16 September – Term 3 concludes Wednesday in Week 5 marked the middle day of Term Three, and was therefore an ideal time for boys to stop 10 October – Term 4 and reflect on how they had been progressing this term. commences Year 8 boys and their parents were invited to a Learning Journeys DVD Night, which provided an opportunity for them to hear four different students’ perspectives on the Learning Journeys program which was held during the last week of Semester One. As well as the Year 8 IMPORTANT NOTICES speakers, a professional video was shown highlighting Southside Jazz, Friday 2 the many facets of the program. September, South Room, Centre for the Arts, 7.00pm The outdoor component was impressively depicted, with Year 8 boys undertaking the high ropes course, the Oaks Day Parents’ Function, confidence course and the raft building task. Highlights Thursday 3 November, from the guest speakers were also shown, including the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club oft-repeated refrains of AFL legend Tommy Hafey, familiar to any boy at the School who has participated in Learning Journeys. The technical production of the DVD was excellent and it reflected countless hours of work that had gone on behind the scenes.

What stood out while watching the DVD, however, was the interviews with individual students as they spoke about their experience of Learning Journeys. Most boys highlighted neither the guest speakers nor the outdoor components, but the precious opportunity they were given for individuals to mend broken relationships or strengthen existing ones within the year level. The advantage of having such a night midway through the term was that boys were reminded afresh of apologies they had given to other students, or assurances they had offered about changing their behaviour. This gave them a wonderful opportunity to measure their actions for the first half of the term against what they had said they would do, and to provide some degree of accountability among their peer group. The Year 8 boys will have a second opportunity to do this when they receive their copies of the DVDs at the end of Term Three.

Cover for Cambodia Last Thursday night, Trinity held a fundraiser for the Carpets for Communities. This charity raises awareness and seeks to empower women in Cambodia through making carpets to give their family a stable income. The theme of the night was ‘Cover Songs’ performed by students of Trinity Grammar School. People sang, played instruments and entertained the crowd many all different ways. Some of the stand out performances were Will Cooper’s beautiful use of vocals singing ‘Shelter From the Storm’ by Bob Dylan, Mr Richard Grummet’s version of ‘Summer Winds’ brought tears to our eyes. Max Greenham should also be commended on a fantastic comedy act that would have made Jim Carey proud.

Thank you to everyone who cooked, helped prepare the night and performed. A special mention to Mr Luke Dixon who set up the stage and all Year 10 boys and others who helped organise this special evening. We managed to raise over $1600 dollars and this will be used to fund at least 3 entrepreneurs in Cambodia. We hope this can become an annual event. The Carpets Crew

Debating Messages Junior debating kicked off last Monday in great style, with the green and gold picking up 6 wins out of 8. This year the Junior Debating Program is being hosted by Fintona Girls’ School. The senior debating year level captains have taken up roles as coaches for the Years 7 and 8 debaters, imparting their knowledge and expertise to the younger boys. It is wonderful to see the boys training together, developing a mentor relationship which will be further strengthened as they progress in debating over the years.

It was fantastic to see a huge variety of boys participating, and the debates held on Monday will put them in a great position for the rest of the season. All visitors and friends are welcome to the debates, held at 6.00pm and 7.30pm at Fintona.

Special congratulations go to William Deed, Lachlan Cho, Andrew Kondopoulos and Tiger Lin, who each received best speaker, having the highest scoring speech in their debate.

Public Speaking Messages Congratulations to Malte Ahrens and Tom St John who have made it into the final series of the Thant Public Speaking Competition. A fantastic achievement. Good luck!

Grandparents’ Day Friday 9 September Hello everyone. Very soon we will be holding our annual Grandparents’ Day in the Junior School. The day will be split into two sessions:

• 8.00am to 11.15am for the ELC to Year Two • 10.30am to 1.15pm for Years Three to Six.

Each session will commence in the East Room in the Centre for the Arts (off Charles Street), and will include refreshments, classroom visits and a presentation by our students.

Grandparents’ Day is an important and highly anticipated event in our Junior School calendar with many grandparents travelling great distances to enjoy this special time with their families. The children are very excited at the prospect of being a host and guide for the day.

Of grandparenting, television interviewer Michael Parkinson once said:

“My wife and I have eight grandchildren now and I’m in a very, very happy stage of my life. I’m reliving those times that I didn’t have time for my own children. When my kids were growing up I was away. I was all over the world. I didn’t see them for two or three years basically. I didn’t realise how much I had missed out until I had grandchildren.

A grandparent’s role is to be all the things a parent can’t be. To be that patient, wise, solid person who unconditionally, and without fail, loves them. You’re that bastion. I see the love that my grandchildren have for my wife, particularly, and the effect that she has on their education and the way they look at things. We take them to the theatre, we do the things that parents don’t have time to do.

I take my grand-daughters, I have five of them, to good restaurants and say, ‘This is a good restaurant. Now, if you have a boyfriend who doesn’t bring you here, then don’t go out with him. You tell him you want tea at the Ritz. I mean, don’t muck around.’ Grandparents can do that you see. You can affect their life. You can make them dream.”

Grandparents are a key part of our extended Trinity community and we thank them for all that they contribute to our wonderful school, and the support that they provide for our busy families.

I do hope to see many of our Trinity grandparents and special friends around our campus on the 9th of September, sharing special moments and creating memories for a lifetime. Please remember to pass the invitations on to those you love.

State Finals Poetry Competition After their successful participation in the Regional German Poetry Competition on August 3, Michael Connor (8E) and Will Murphy (5M) took part in the State Finals last Saturday at the Austrian Club. The two boys had support from their teachers Frau Stanzel and Frau Hohlweg that day. The boys, their parents and their teachers had great fun and enjoyed the fabulous atmosphere, the wonderful organisation of the event and the great German food: Mohnkuchen, Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, Goulasch mit Knödel and Wiener Schnitzel, just to name a few items on the menu.

We are very proud to announce that Michael Connor came 6th and Will Murphy came 2nd in their respective Year 8 and Year 5 sections.

Last Wednesday, a group of ELC parents and staff enjoyed a presentation by Alison Brown, a psychologist who works and consults with us on a regular basis. Alison titled her presentation ‘Seven Little Australians’ which outlined typical characteristics of some of the behaviours parents find challenging. Amongst others, Alison covered whingeing, sulking and aggressive behaviour, often relating amusing anecdotes from her experiences with her own children.

The feedback we received from parents was very positive and Alison has agreed to share her ’10 Secrets to Success’ for shaping appropriate behaviour.

10 Secrets To Success

1. Acknowledge how they are feeling - Once acknowledged, children feel heard and understood 2. Provide clear expectations - General expectations … e.g. Do what adults say - Specific expectations … colour in whilst I have my hair cut 3. Consistency – time / place / people - Ensure children receive the same message from all people, at all times, in all places 4. Praise and reward desired behaviours - Let them know how well they are doing and what is appreciated 5. Provide boundaries – predictable routine & rituals - Children feel safe, secure & confident when they know the boundaries and know what is expected 6. Involve them in decision making and setting rules - Within reason, allow children to be involved in making “some” choices (all of which will be acceptable to you) 7. Immediate, inconvenient and relevant consequences - Act quickly to help the child learn that certain behaviours are not appropriate and will not be tolerated 8. Tell them what TO do / not just what NOT to do - Give a number of suitable alternatives so that children are not left wondering what they should be doing 9. Make sure the ADULTS are holding the reins - Children will WANT to be in control, but ensure that adults are making the ultimate decisions 10. Encourage ownership/responsibility / self-control/choices - Encouraging children to take and accept responsibility for their own behaviour builds confidence and pride

In the media recently, there have been many arguments put forward regarding the pros and cons of smacking – and one valid point I read mentioned that while smacking is frowned upon, there is a total lack of alternatives offered to parents. We hope that if needed, some of Alison’s strategies may give you some positive ideas to try. Just keep in mind, changes in behaviour take time and often meet quite a bit of resistance!

* Forms for the ELC Term 3 Holiday Program have been distributed this week. Please complete and return your form by Friday September 9 if you wish your child to attend.

Chaplain’s Chat Back to top

Webster defines courage as ‘the quality or state of mind or spirit enabling one to face danger or hardship with confidence or resolution: the ability to disregard fear: boldness, bravery, intrepidity, valour, fearlessness.’ People who are facing the trauma of a terminal illness and the possibility of death demonstrate great courage. Those in war zones are dealing with the fear of death daily and, together with their mates, show courage in the face of fighting the enemy.

Plato defined courage as ‘knowing what not to fear’. How do we teach our children not to be fearful but to show courage in this rough and tumble world?

Home must be a place of love. When children are sure they are loved by mum and dad they are given the confidence to go out into the world and meet the issues of daily life. When a person knows the love of God, then fear can be absorbed by His love.

Children love heroes, people who stand out from the crowd and who give children and adults an example to follow. Think of the courage and bravery Jim Stynes has shown in his battle with cancer and the effect this has had not only on the sporting fraternity, but on the community as a whole. Children need parents who show courage in their daily lives. This means making difficult decisions in doing the right thing, displaying strong values, and making a stand on issues when required. There is a cost factor in some of these decisions where sacrifices are made. For example, putting other people’s needs before your own.

Encouragement is a strong prescription for building character and understanding in children. They are building up self-esteem and confidence so feeling good about themselves and the world is very important.

The Bible is a great source of wisdom and one can find texts that are helpful.

One of these comes from Ephesians 6:14 ‘Stand therefore and fasten the belt of truth around your waist and put on the breastplate of righteousness……’

In this way people will follow the courageous example of Christ who faced death for the world to understand the love of God.

As Plato said, ‘Courage is a kind of salvation’.

Upcoming Events Chamber Concert – Thursday 1 September, 7.00pm, Chapel Did you know that Trinity Grammar students are able to perform with small chamber ensembles as well as in bands and orchestras? Come and listen to a magical concert of chamber music this Thursday 1 September in the Chapel.

Southside Jazz – Friday 2 September, South Room A wonderful night of jazz will be held this Friday 2 September at 7.00pm in the South Room, Centre for the Performing Arts. This is always a fun and energetic night for performers and audience alike. Melbourne Strings and Bands Festival – A very successful year in 2011!!! Eight Trinity Grammar ensembles competed at the Melbourne Bands Festival this year – Trinity Strings, Symphony Orchestra, Marles String Orchestra, The Stringers, Mitre Band, Symphonic Wind, Intermediate Band and Junior Concert Band to great success. Each of the ensembles won shields including bronze, silver and a gold! Trinity Symphony Orchestra was invited back to perform at the elite Melbourne Bands Festival Finale Concert. Congratulations to all involved!!

The experience our ensembles received participating in this event was even more valuable that the well-deserved accolades they have received. Each ensemble had the opportunity to listen to and review the performance of other schools in the same category – this enables students who do not also participate in external bands/ orchestras to see what other ensembles across Melbourne do. Each of our ensembles had the opportunity to perform in Robert Blackwood Hall – all performance venues are different and it is important that students play in a range of venues to learn to become more accustomed to the differences this can make – individually as a player and within a group context. Finally, each of our ensembles was provided with an onstage tutorial with the chief adjudicator who discussed areas to build and refine with regard to their musicianship and performance skills as an ensemble.

Thank you to parents who assisted transporting students to sessions outside of school hours and to the Trinity Friends of Music for supplying supper to the Symphonic Wind members who stayed after school.

Laptops For South Sudan Does any student or ex-student have a laptop purchased through the Trinity computer programme which they no longer use, but which is still in working order, to donate to a good cause?

Our organisation, Southern Sudanese in Australia Relief and Care, is setting up public libraries in South Sudan and part of this project involves provision of a computer room for teaching and research purposes and for library records.

If anyone has a laptop they would like to donate, the tech centre would be happy to accept them before the end of term so they may be checked for faults before they are taken to Sudan in October.

Any donations would be most gratefully received by SSPARC on behalf of the Christians of South Sudan in their post-war struggle to establish their new country. Laptops can be dropped off at the Tech Centre.
