Finchley to help marshal the local open ride. After the noon start by the mayor we did a triangular shape route to Finchley Central, Victoria first stop. After the raffle and rest we rode south on quiet paths by Henly’s Corner, then north by the Dollis Brook to finish at Swan Lane open space. Local police were very helpful on the route. Barnet cyclists also helped. ECC riders: Paul, Graham, Alan, Michèle, Richard, Les, Maz, Noreen. Sunday 17 June – Harpenden and St. Albans (Not!). By Peter. A horrible start as First Capital Connect went AWOL for the morning. The leader arrived late after his train was cancelled, and four riders were stuck in a train outside Bowes Park for nearly an hour. When we got together, we decided to abandon the original ride. Instead we repeated a ride from last November, through East Finchley, Hampstead Garden Suburb and Totteridge to Barnet. At Barnet we stopped at the Sebright Arms, only to discover the garden was out of action for refurbishment. But although the pub was busy inside for Fathers' Day we were made welcome and received excellent service and food. Afterwards, back across Hadley common to New Barnet, where Les took over to lead back to Palmers Green. Peter M, Les (leaders), Dave, Denise, Michèle, Maz, Pat, Graham. No Grabostats, as Graham had forgotten to recharge the battery, but probably around 20 miles. Tuesday 19 June. Evening ride and pub supper. We set off at 7.15, from Enfield Civic Centre in sunny intervals and light wind. Northwards then up Clay Hill, Rosewood Drive, Cattlegate Road, under M25, left turn to Northaw village, Two Brewers pub. We parked in the beer garden before ordering food and drinks at 8pm. We enJoyed our meals before leaving about 10pm via Coopers End Road to Enfield in the dark. Leader: Les , Maz, Graham, Sibel, Paul L, Michèle, Mark S., Jackie, Peter MO. Grabostats: 13.46 miles; 9.4mph ave.; 33mph max. Thursday 21 June. – BMW 118. 9 came, including David’s unicycle demo. Sunday 24 June. – The 6 th Enfield Festival of Cycling, Enfield Town Park. Thursday 5 July. – WHCC Meeting, AGM. 16 came. Sunday 8 July. – Chelmsford Essex Country. Despite dodgy weather forecast the ride did take place after all! The five Ponders End train travellers got to Stratford as the heavens opened, so decided to return as more heavy rain fell. Meanwhile, Peter at Liverpool St. Station carried on to Chelmsford to Join three others. After a later start, these brave four set off in light showers. Along lanes – some flooded to 300mm+ deep! – to White Roding, with lunch at the Black Horse. Dodging more rain on the route back to Chelmsford. • Tour De France
Tour de France The Tour de France is the world’s most famous, and arguably the hardest, cycling race. It takes place every year and lasts for a total of three weeks, covering almost 3,500km. History of the Race During the late 19th century, cycling became a popular hobby for many people. As time went on, organised bike races were introduced and professional cycling became very popular in France. On 6th July 1903, 60 cyclists set off on a race and covered 2,428km in a circular route over six stages. 18 days after setting off, 21 of the original 60 cyclists made it back to the finish line in Paris. The winner was Maurice Garin and the Tour de France was born. Except for war time, the race has taken place every year since then and has become more challenging with the addition of mountain climbs and longer distances. The Modern Tour de France Each year, the tour begins in a different country. The route changes annually too, though usually finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. In 2019, the race starts in Brussels, Belgium on the 6th July and ends in Paris on the 28th July after 21 stages totalling a distance of 3,460km. There are 22 teams taking part in the Tour de France, each with eight riders. The reigning champion is Welsh cyclist Geraint Thomas.
