Plautus and Terence in Their Roman Contexts 1 GESINE MANUWALD Plautus and Terence in Their Roman Contexts Introduction Scenic productions formed a significant element of Roman festival culture from its inception. Literary versions of such performances came into being with the adoption of the dramatic genres of tragedy and comedy from Greece; soon, further dramatic genres established themselves. Out of the great number of plays written over the centuries only a few have been preserved in full: from the Republican period there are comedies by Plautus and Terence; from imperial times there are tragedies and one fabula prae- texta transmitted under Seneca’s name. It is no surprise then that works by Plautus, Terence, and Seneca have received the greatest attention; but their historical, social, and literary contexts have not always been adequately taken into account. Even though modern recipients will never be able to approach Roman dramas in the same way as original audiences did, attempts at appreciating these plays within their historical framework are possible. With regard to the comedies of Plautus and Terence from the Republican period, this means that they have to be placed within the context of their dramatic genre, which covers, beyond the two well-known playwrights, a large number of poets over an extended period of time. These dramas should also be seen within the context of other dramatic genres and of Republican literature more gener- ally, of their historical and social settings, and of the performance conditions as determined by organisational structures and audience reception. This chapter will look at these framing contexts, which mutually condition each other (on Roman vs. Greek comedy, see Telò in this volume). Context 1: The Dramatic Genre of Fabula Palliata The emergence of literary Roman drama is conventionally dated to 240 bc. University College London (UCL), on 24 Mar 2020 at 16:06:51, subject to the Cambridge Core terms of use, available at https://www.cambridge.org/core/terms. https://doi.org/10.1017/9780511740466.003 the world of roman comedy based on existing Greek models on stage; his plays were shown at a festival organised by Roman magistrates right after the conclusion of the First Punic War (264–241 bc).1 Discrepancies in the sources leave it unclear whether Livius Andronicus produced one or two dramas on this occasion and whether these were a tragedy and/or comedy; at any rate the poet established Greek-style tragedy (fabula crepidata = tragedy in Greek dress) and Greek- style comedy (fabula palliata = comedy in Greek dress) in Rome. By the time Plautus (c. 250–184 bc) started producing Greek-style comedies towards the end of the third century bc, this type of drama had already been composed and watched at Rome for a few decades. In addition to Livius Andronicus (c. 280/70–200 bc), poets active in the area of comedy before Plautus or contemporary with him include Naevius (c. 280/60–200 bc) and Ennius (239–169 bc). Hence Plautus could build on established dramatic conventions and rely on the audience’s familiarity with them. The increasing sophistication of dramatic genres is probably the reason why Plautus is the first known Roman dramatist to have concentrated on one dramatic genre only (fabula palliata). In this area he seems to have been prolific: twenty-one (almost complete) plays are extant, and many more titles and fragments survive under his name, some of which, however, are likely to be spurious. Many plays came to be attributed to this successful playwright; 130 plays circulated under his name at some point, according to ancient evidence (Gell. NA 3.3). This situation served as an incentive for early scholars to look at Plautus’ output and try to separate genuine from spurious works.2 While the surviving fragments of comedies by Livius Andronicus and Ennius are meagre and do not allow a valid assessment of their specific characteristics, the extant remains of Naevius’ comedies (titles of about 35 comedies and about 140, partly incomplete, comic verses) are more substan- tial; in fact, Naevius was mainly regarded as a writer of comedies in antiquity.3 On the basis of the available titles and fragments it seems that his comedies exhibited typical motifs and plot structures of (Greek and Roman) New Comedy: there are figures such as parasites, braggart soldiers, rivals, prostitutes, twins, and even quadruplets; plots feature love affairs, conflicts between fathers and sons because of love relationships or the need for money, as well as slaves directing the course of action. Some comedies were apparently made more complex by ‘double’ plots, i.e. featuring two fathers and two sons with similar problems, by issues around mistaken 1 Cf. Cic. The prologue to Terence’s Andria claims that Naevius was one of the Roman comic poets who used contaminatio, i.e. who combined elements from several Greek models into one Latin play (Ter. An. 15–21). On the whole Naevius kept the Greek setting and the Greek point of view of his models, while at the same time including allusions to Roman reality as well as references to Roman virtues and socially and politically relevant values.5 Equally, Naevius enhanced the Roman element in other literary genres, composing dramas and an epic on topics from Roman history. All this points to creative adaptation and poetic originality in Naevius’ output. As has been recognised, there are similarities in diction and individual 6 motifs between Naevius and Plautus, and a few titles are assigned to both poets in the textual tradition (Carbonaria, Colax, Nervolaria).7 Plautus is said to have revised and updated plays of older poets, which thereby gained characteristic features of his style and were ascribed to him (Gell. NA 3.3.13). This relationship to predecessors and the fact that some traits commonly associated with Plautus are already present in the works of his older contemporary indicate that Plautus worked in an emerging comic tradition and developed existing elements further. The dramas by Plautus and those by Terence (c. 195/4–159 bc) are separated by several decades, during which the poet Caecilius Statius (c. 230/20– 168/7bc) was active. Owing to this chronological position, modern scholars often regard Caecilius as an intermediary or transitional figure.8 As his dramatic output only survives in fragments (42 titles of comedies and almost 300, partly incomplete, lines), it is difficult to get a proper idea of his plays. Opt. gen. 2); Volcacius Sedigitus’ canon (c. 100 bc) of the ten best writers of comedy is headed by Caecilius (cf. Gell. NA 15.24); Quintilian reports that the ancients extolled Caecilius (Quint. Inst. 10.1.99); and (on one occasion) Gellius refers to him as ‘that famous writer of comedies’ (Gell.     CHAPTER THREE NAEVIUS Dispositio. The Clash of Myth and History Double Identity: Campanian and Roman After Livius Andronicus, Naevius1 was the second Latin epic poet. He was of "Campanian" origin (Gellius 1. 20. 14), which, according to Latin usage, means that he was from Capua,2 a city allegedly founded by Romulus, and his thoughts and feelings were those of a Roman, not without a large admixture of Campanian pride. Capua in his day was almost as important economically as Rome and Carthage and its citizens were fully aware of this (though it was not until the Second Punic War that it abandoned Rome). Naevius himself tells us (Varro apud Gell. 17. 21. 45) that he actively participated in the First Punic War. The experience of that great historical conflict led to the birth of the Bellum Poenicum, the first Roman national epic. Similarly, Ennius would write his Annales after the Second Punic War and Virgil his Aeneid after the Civil Wars. In 235 B.C., only five years after the first performance of a Latin play by Livius Andronicus, Naevius staged a drama of his own. Soon he became the greatest comic playwright, unsurpassed until Plautus. He did not restrain his sharp tongue even when speaking of the noblest families. Although he did not mention anyone by name, he unequivocally alluded to a rather unheroic moment in the life of the young Scipio (Com. 108-110 R), and his quarrel with the Metelli (ps.­ Ascon., Ad Cic. Verr. 1. 29), formerly dismissed as fiction,3 is accepted today as having some basis in fact.

We know that it had an enormous and imme- diate popularity among poets of the ‘Golden Age’ and was read and discussed from the second to the fourth century.1 However, the study and discussion of Catullus in the Middle Ages have left only a few traces. He is mentioned two or three times and he is not listed in the manuscript catalogues of monastic libraries during the Carolingian age; whereas in the same period we witness a multiplication of copies of Horace, Virgil, Ovid, and Juvenal. Nevertheless, there is evidence that Catullus was being read in France and northern Italy: in the late ninth century poem 62 was included in a florilegium;2 in 966 Raterio, Bishop of Verona, was reading Catullus, as he says in one of his sermons: “I read Catullus that has never been accessed before”.3 However, the Liber soon disap- peared, or more probably it lay undisturbed in the Chapter Library of Verona throughout most of the Middle Ages.4 1 The modern study of Kenneth Quinn, The Catullan revolution (Melbourne, Melbourne University Press, 1959), describes the impact that Catullus had on Roman poetry. The time of the presentation of the Poenulus at ^ Rome is also imcertain : Hueffner believes that the capture of Sparta ' was a purely Plautine reference to the war with Nabis in 195 b.c. and that the Poenulus appeared in 194 or 193 b.c. The date, however, of the Roman presentation of the Pseudolus is definitely established by the didascalia as 191 b.c.

    24 Parental Gifts: Father-Son Dedications and Dialogues in Roman Didactic Literature FANNIE J. LEMOINE Introduction Literary dedications are designed either to acknowledge a bond between the author and the dedicatee or to attempt to establish such a bond. In the Latin didactic tradition authors frequently present themselves as fathers giving their educational treatises to their sons or composing fictive dialogues in which they act as the teacher and the son as the pupil. The dedications and dialogues reflected historical practice and reinforced patterns of paternal and filial behavior through literary example. Father-son dedications and dialogues also serve formal literary ends. They help the author speak in a more intimate, yet authoritative voice and create a sense of reciprocal obligation between composer and reader. The dedication or the dialogue establishes the context within which the author presents his literary gift. The five aims of this study are: (1) to trace a brief history of father-son dedications and dialogues in Latin didactic literature, (2) to examine the formative contributions made by Cato and Cicero, (3) to argue for a distinctly Roman character to the tradition, (4) to illustrate the conventional presentations of authorial personality and subject matter found in later introductory prefaces, and (5) to show how the conventions dealing with persons and subject matter are subverted by two late Latin paternal authors, Augustine and Martianus Capella. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the influence of this pattern of familial instruction upon didactic texts in the Middle Ages.     Gábor Bolonyai The Royal Librarian’s Notes The first printed Greek-Latin dictionary was edited by Johannes Crastonus in 1478 in Milan. Its second edition was released 5 years later on 10 November 1483 in Vicenza. One copy of it was bought by a certain Paulus Romuleus,1 who sent it as a present to his friend, Taddeo Ugoleto serving at that time as a royal librarian in the distant Buda. Apart from enlarging the library’s collection, Ugoleto was also for a while in charge of educating János Corvin, Matthias’s illegitimate son. In the king’s ambitious view, a proper education for a royal scion and heir (although, for the time being, János was only a secret heir) comprised knowledge of both Latin and Greek languages. Thus, a new printed dictionary must have been doubly welcome for Ugoleto: both for his own research work (perhaps he had already cherished plans of editing printed texts, which were fulfilled later on)2 and his teaching obligations. It is no wonder, therefore, that as soon as the Crastonus dictionary had arrived, Ugoleto immediately got down to work on it. He read through the whole book item by item, and added notes propria manu on the margins, by inserting missing entries, alternative meanings, and other grammatical information. The original printed dictionary contained about 15 thousand entries (on 520 pages), to which Ugoleto supplied more than one thousand new items. We do not know exactly how much time this meticuously done work took, but certainly not more than six months, because, as his note at the end of the book indicates, by the 20th of June next year he had already finished it: „Relectum xxo.
