Job Description

URGENT & EMERGENCY CARE/ CARE GROUP

Care Group Director: Andrew Mortimer

Operations Director: Matthew Pomeroy

Head Of Nursing Zoe Newman

The Emergency Department

Our vibrant Emergency Departments at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, and Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, Margate, offer an exciting and supportive environment for ambitious professionals who are passionate about emergency care and want to work at the top of their game.

The Emergency Departments (EDs); one at the William Harvey Hospital (WHH), Ashford and the other at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQMH), Margate, each offer a full 24 hour emergency service. The Emergency Care Centre (ECC) at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury, has a 24 hour nurse-led minor injuries unit and GP led minor illness service.

Our Emergency Departments provide innovative and fast paced integrated emergency care to a wide range of patients from East Kent. It is our inspiration to develop into an academic and research unit in emergency medicine for Kent.

This is an exciting and opportune time to join the Trust as we are implementing a consultant and specialty doctor expansion programme, which will further support the emergency floor model of care and also recognises the increasing number of Emergency Department (ED) attendances annually. The Care Group has been funded for an establishment of 10 Emergency Medicine Consultants in the William Harvey Hospital (WHH) and also 10 Emergency Medicine Consultants at the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Hospital (QE).

A 25 doctor middle grade and 8 junior doctor rota has been developed, which will have junior and senior speciality doctors. This will provide a consistent level of cover across the seven days with improved handover and cover in the evenings and overnight.

The emergency care model will reinforce collaborative working between emergency and acute physicians. Pathways for all specialties are being reviewed and developed so that patients are able to flow through the ED.

The Trauma unit at WHH is one of the highest performing units in the UK (TARN data) and is part of the South East London, Kent and Medway (SELKaM) Trauma Network. Both the QEQMH and WHH use the SELKaM Trauma Unit protocols and have newly refurbished Resuscitation Rooms which enable continuity for clinicians to work safely between sites.

These are highly motivated and focused departments, which prides themselves on delivering the highest standards of safe patient care. Clinical governance is central to all that we do; ensuring that patient care, safety and quality are the highest priority.

WHH also provides the primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) service for Kent and receives all the out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrests (OOHCA). It has excellent links with the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS). We are currently developing the research activities of the departments and are involved in NIHR projects.

The departments are in the second year of a 3 year programme to implement the Advanced Clinical Practitioner role and our Consultants are a pivotal part of that development, providing clinical supervision and mentorship to the trainees. Additionally we offer a development programme for aspiring Consultants and would welcome applications from candidates with experience of supervising developing doctors and/or are looking to become FRCEM/MRCEM Examiners.

A specialty doctor teaching and development programme has been developed to enable specialty doctors to progress to consultant posts via Article 14 which includes secondments to Intensive Care, Paediatrics and Acute medicine. All consultants are involved in this programme, providing mentorship, supervision and support.

In total approximately 220,000 patients are seen annually across the Emergency Departments with a seasonal increase due to tourist influx, of up to approximately 270 patients per day in the summer months. There is an established service to enable the majority of minor injuries to be seen and treated by nurse practitioners.

This is a highly motivated and focused department, which prides itself on delivering the highest standards of safe patient care. Clinical governance is central to all that we do; ensuring that patient care, safety and quality are the highest priority.

We would like to invest in you and in our service by supporting you with:

• Flexible job planning • Sessions for sub-speciality interests in other departments or Trusts (e.g. simulation, HEMS, Paediatric, Acute medicine, etc.) • Time for internal and external research • Time for internal and external teaching (especially ALS, APLS, ATLS) • Supporting your individual clinical interests

If you are a dynamic and innovative consultant who can play your part in shaping our reputation for excellence in emergency medicine, we want you on our team.

We are a flexible Trust that offers post holders the opportunity to join our existing consultant body on either the William Harvey Hospital (WHH) or Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQMH), or work across both sites.

Our Consultants currently work a rota that is based on a 12 PA job plan, encompassing rotating shifts through the week to ensure on site Consultant cover between 8am to 10.00pm on weekdays and a one in seven weekend commitment ensuring 8 hours of onsite Consultant cover at the weekends. The job plan agreed with existing consultants has a very favourable working pattern with shifts varying between 7 and 9 hours each day. PA’s are calculated at 3hrs per PA for hours worked by Consultant during 1900-2200 weekdays and all weekend hours. Weekly rota includes a day off during the week (Mon-Fri)

The standard 10 PA job plan would include 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA as per National terms and conditions. Consultants opting to work as 12 PA job plan are provided with a total of 3 SPA and 9 DCC sessions per week. 1 of the SPA’s are allocated for special interest development off site.
