Bingham ABSTRACT This qualitative critical phenomenological study describes the lived experiences of Black collegiate women student-athletes attending predominantly White institutions. Interviews and written narratives of ten Black woman student-athletes who attend National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) colleges or universities were analyzed. Wilen’s (2007) critical scholarship, policies, and practices of inclusion and exclusion are applied to the embodied lived experiences described by Moustakas (1994) to capture the circumstances and configurations of collegiate athletic recruitment. This research integrates Intersectionality and Organizational theories to describe the relationship of the Black Collegiate (BC) woman athlete to her college or university. The Complex Decision-Making Framework for Intersecting Identities was the conceptual framework and categorized their decision-making process and explained how they perceive and make sense of their recruitment.

  • Lexington by Kathleen Jones
Lexington by Kathleen Jones Lexington was bred by Dr. Elisha Warfield at Lexington, KY, and was known early in his career as "Darley". Under that name, he won his first two races before being purchased by Richard Ten Broeck, who changed his name. He raced a total of seven times, although during those days "a race" was often a series of heats contested on the same day, with the "winner" being whichever horse was the first to win two heats. Lexington met with defeat only once, and earned an astounding figure of $56,600 in purse money. Lexington did not race at age two. His debut performance (as Darley) came at the Lexington Association track in a 1-mile heat race on 23 May, 1853. The weather was rainy and the track was heavy as Darley faced his first 11 rivals. He swept the competition easily, winning both of the first two heats in respective times of 1:55½, and 1:57 flat. The Glencoe colt Wild Irishman ran second in both heats. Four days later, Darley returned to the Association track and moved up in distance to the Citizen's Purse which was contested in 2-mile heats. Medway won the first heat in 3:42½, but Darley was quick to regroup and aced the two subsequent heats in 3:41½, then 3:49. Following that race, Richard Ten Broeck purchased the colt and renamed him "Lexington". It was common practice to rename horses when under new ownership; perhaps it gave the new owners the feeling they were unveiling something new.

FITZSIMMONS, as told to Jimmy Breslin It's a great show, says racIng's most famous trainer, but it's not much of a test of horseflesh .... Nashua made a big move when the horses straightened into the stretch. Swaps had been leading most of the way, but now Eddie Ar- caro was putting Nashua's mind to his busi- ness, and I was starting to perk up. Then, as simply as you please, Swaps pulled away in a couple of strides and went on to win the 1955 Kentucky Derby while Arcaro was trying to get Nashua together for another run. "Well, the horse ran his race and got beat," I told the writers and horse people around me. "Looked to me like we have no excuses. I'll find out about that a little later. Anyway, he seemed to come out of it all right, and I'm glad for that" Then I went to my car and drove home for dinner. This wasn't at Churchill Downs. I was at Belmont Park, on Long Island, more than 700 miles from Louisville and Nashua, the horse I trained. I watched the race on television. Timepiece in hand, Sunny Jim clocks some of his friends at Hialeah. "Each time a horse of mine goes out on the track-even for a workout-I don't feel easy until I've got him back safe in the barn." My Drift Title: Triple Crown Written by: Jerry D. Petersen Date: 20 May 2017 Article Number: 259-2017-15 The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Horse Racing, better known as the Triple Crown, is a title awarded to a three-year-old thoroughbred horse who wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years, the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875. These races are now run annually in May and early June of each year. The Triple Crown Trophy, commissioned in 1950 but awarded to all previous winners as well as those after 1950, is awarded to a Triple Crown winner. The Triple Crown Trophy Churchill Downs thoroughbred racetrack is located on Central Avenue in south Louisville, Kentucky. It is most famous for hosting the Kentucky Derby annually (on the first Saturday of May). This race is nicknamed, “The Run for the Roses.” The track is named for John and Henry Churchill who provided the land. It officially opened in 1875 and held the first Kentucky Derby and the first Kentucky Oaks in the same year. Churchill Downs has also hosted the renowned Breeders' Cup on eight occasions, most recently in 2011. Churchill Downs Front Inside Churchill Downs The Kentucky Derby Pimlico Race Course is a thoroughbred horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes. Its name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers named the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London. The racetrack is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" after a small rise in the infield that became a favorite gathering place for thoroughbred trainers and race enthusiasts.

In special circumstances, papers written in one of the Sinitic topolects (fangyan) may be considered for publication. Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. This series is not the place for safe, sober, and stodgy presentations. Sino- Platonic Papers prefers lively work that, while taking reasonable risks to advance the field, capitalizes on brilliant new insights into the development of civilization. Submissions are regularly sent out to be refereed, and extensive editorial suggestions for revision may be offered.
