Water, there!” 5 ABSTRACT The marsh at Cabo da Praia’s quarry is an ecosystem that was originated during the construction of the Praia da Vitoria’s harbor. A coastal wetland subject to tidal cycle, the marsh is visited by numerous species of water birds, particularly migratory birds from North America and there is a breeding species, the kentish plover. Regular visits to the site occur by birdwatchers from northern Europe. In 2000 a tank farm was deployed at the site, reducing the marsh by half. In order to better characterize the population knowledge and environmental perceptions regarding the marsh, a literature review was carried out, followed by the building of an conceptual framework and from this, we defined some dimensions of study: utility, conservation status; responsibility management; actions necessary for their protection; risks; future expectations; sources of information and also the availability of participation by respondents. These were then analyzed through a survey and interviewing some of the institutions related to the marshes of the municipality of Praia. It was found that the marsh is well known by the scientific community, but due to the prevalence of respondents with higher educational qualifications in the surveys completed over the Internet, it is expected that the marsh is still little known by the population. The sample revealed that the marsh is currently degraded, due to ignorance of the site’s existence, neglect by authorities and waste disposal. Respondents are more concerned with the industry, sewages, odors and potential industry accidents, that with any problems caused by the marsh. They indicate many uses, for ecology and human enjoyment as well as the existence of potential for tourism, environmental education and scientific studies since the site is a "living laboratory". The site needs management and regulation. The first steps have already begun: the removal of solid waste by non-governmental organizations and the fuel park’s concessionaires. Opinions differ regarding the best way to protect it: i) disclosing it in the media or, ii) restricting it only for environmental education and scientific research. The marsh needs an increase in security and, according to data from the questionnaires, some infra-structure support, signage and restricting access, to maximize the potentials above. With relatively low costs will be possible to secure the future of this hotspot, as an added value in terms of Azorean natural areas. • Birds As a Tool for Island Habitat Conservation and Management
American Journal of Environmental Sciences 8 (1): 5-10, 2012 ISSN 1553-345X © 2012 Science Publications Birds as a Tool for Island Habitat Conservation and Management Pedro Rodrigues and Regina Tristao da Cunha Department of Biology, Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, University of the Azores, Portugal Abstract: Problem statement: The Azores is a archipelago of nine volcanic islands, situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean. Oceanic islands are known hotspots of biodiversity and the Azores, although relatively young (0.3-13 MA), conform to this general pattern. The local avifauna amount to 37 birding species, with two endemic species and 11 endemic subspecies. With an estimated population of 240,000 inhabitants, with increasing needs, most of the natural habitats that support bird populations are under a constant pressure. The use of bird distribution and species richness could be used as a suitable tool for management and would also be effective when applied in other archipelagos. Approach: In the course of the Bionatura project, the Atlantis Tierra 2.0 software provided the storage of biological data from all the islands, including the avifauna, in a 500 ×500 m grid. As an outcome, important items for bird conservation and habitat management were achieved for all the species occurring in the archipelago, including species richness. Results: A detailed knowledge of the spatial distribution of the endemic species and sub-species, plus the protected species, is a powerful tool for conservation and management policies in small islands where biodiversity is usually restricted to narrow distributions. Conclusion: The results defined an area of 39, 273 h (16.8% of Azores total area); providing an ideal area for conservation of suitable habitats for bird’s species in the Azores.

  • Habitat Restoration on Praia Islet, Azores Archipelago, Pro- Ved Successful for Seabirds, but New Threats Have Emerged
Airo 23: 25-35 (2014-15) Habitat restoration on Praia Islet, Azores Archipelago, pro- ved successful for seabirds, but new threats have emerged Recuperação de habitats do Ilhéu da Praia, Arquipélago dos Açores, é bem sucedida para aves marinhas mas surgem novas ameaças Joël Bried & Verónica C. Neves SUMMARY As on many other islands, most of the seabird species breeding in the Azores archi- pelago are now restricted to tiny remnants of their former nesting range, due mainly to the consequences of the introduction of mammals by man. Praia islet (off Graciosa island) holds six seabird species, four of which are classified as species “of Conserva- tion Concern” in Europe and another one is considered globally “Vulnerable”. Habi- tat restoration, combining rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus eradication in 1997, installation of artificial nest boxes for terns in 1996 and for storm-petrels in 2000, and native plant re-introduction between 1998 and 2003, led to a noticeable recovery of vegetation cover and seabird breeding numbers. Here we present updated data concerning the population trends of the Common Tern Sterna hirundo, the Roseate Tern S. dougallii, the Madeiran Storm-petrel Hydrobates castro and the Azores-endemic Monteiro’s Storm-pe- trel H. monteiroi on Praia islet. Whereas storm-petrel numbers in artificial nests have kept increasing since 2000, tern numbers have been fluctuating since the mid-2000s. However, and despite the current absence of mammals on Praia islet, seabirds still face threats when breeding. Turnstones Arenaria interpres and Starlings Sturnus vulgaris granti consume tern eggs, and introduced Madeiran Lizards Lacerta dugesii may prey on Monteiro’s Storm-petrel chicks.
