PASSAGE THROUGH ANTIQUITY (SERENISSIMA) Here is a passage through antiquity, an incomparable journey with a wealth of sites on offer including biblical landmarks, Crusader castles, Egyptian temples and tombs as well as the magnificent Nabatean city of Petra. We hike between villages visiting handicraft workshops which are socioeconomic development projects managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) to help benefit underprivileged local communities. South of Amman, among the vast rocky mountainous deserts, is Petra. We take the scenic route, hiking an ancient Nabataean route to access this massive site “through the back door.” Upon arrival, we spend several hours exploring Petra’s lesser known corners before departing for the Dead Sea, the site of AdventureNEXT Near East. Excavations, surveys, and restorations over 15 field seasons allow an update of our knowledge on the history of this long-lived site of the ancient Near East, as well as making it possible to match data collected by three previous expeditions within a single comprehensive picture. Many of these sites have an Outstanding Universal Value, as recognized by the inscription of five of them in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Petra was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985, in light of its extraordinary rock- cut architecture and advanced water distribution and storage systems which are a testimony to the Nabataean civilization that populated the site during Hellenistic times. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Department of Antiquities (DoA), as signatories of the World Heritage Convention, ensure the protection and adequate management of Jordan’s World Heritage sites. In the case of a complex site like Petra, an integrated approach to heritage management and planning is required. The Integrated Management Plan perfectly addresses this need by proposing a sustainable and participatory approach to heritage preservation, while ensuring successful tourism and local community engagement. It is a great pleasure to present the finalized Integrated Management Plan for the World Heritage Site of Petra, which is the result of a thoroughly participatory process that engaged a diverse number of stakeholders over a total duration of four years.
