MORCHARD BISHOP W.I. 2019 was an interesting and diverse year for Morchard Bishop WI. We had some brilliant speakers at our meetings. In February, Captain David Dorman gave us a fascinating account of his life at sea and told us many anecdotes from his travels. We had our AGM in April and carried a resolution to improve rural bus services and Mo Sparrow entertained us by demonstrating her easy system for cleaning silver. In May Homeleigh Garden Centre gave us a tutorial on hanging baskets and container planting. In July Rosemary Cook showed us the art of willow work. We had a particularly successful meeting in September when Richard Gibson and his wife told us of their charity providing water for African communities, a popular subject which attracted many guests. In October, a representative of the RNLI showed us films and slides of the extraordinary rescue work that they undertake. We also had some enjoyable outings and lunches. In March we celebrated our 92nd birthday at the Devonshire Dumpling, Mo gave us an account of the WI evening at John Lewis, which was so successful that it was repeated in October, and Sue Pluckwell gave a short talk on the food of Costa Rica. In June we had a Red Coat guided tour of the Bishop's Palace Gardens in Exeter, we were lucky to have one of the original guides who told us some hilarious tales.

    The Devon Origins of John Pullman Patty McGregor racing John Pullman to his place of English origin was like fitting a square Tnail in a round hole. This is a task a blacksmith could accomplish easily. Using heat, a hammer and an anvil, he would simply soften the troublesome nail and reshape it. Fire and force are unsuitable tools for a genealogist faced with conflicting evidence. Contrary facts cannot be melted and hammered to fit; they must instead be resolved with diligent research and careful analysis. Nonetheless, as this unique case study demonstrates, a little attention to the ancient craft of blacksmithing sometimes doesn’t hurt. Family tradition offered few clues about the origins of John Pullman. All that was known of his early years was that he was born in Devonshire, England and had come to Canada as a single young man. When research on him began in earnest in the mid nineties, the starting point was the 1871 Ontario census index to heads of households and strays. The most promising index entry was followed up by consulting the full microfilmed record. This showed that in 1871 John Pullman was a lodger, boarding with a family in Toronto’s east end.1 His future wife, Mary Ann Beamish, was enumerated in the same household. The family with which they were living is believed to have been related to Mary Ann. Tracking John through subsequent census returns built a steadily more detailed picture of his family in Canada. By 1881 he and Mary Ann were married with two children, eight-year-old George and three-year-old Charlotte.2 Sarah, born a surprising 18 years after her next oldest sibling, did not appear with the family until 1901.

The campsite has a number of exciting facilities that we may be able to enjoy. There is a licensed bar and restaurant on site. www.riverdart.co.uk The rest of the day is at leisure Day 2 Wembury to Ivybridge South Devon provides a gentle introduction to the Coast to Coast Walk. On leaving the coast the walker can enjoy a pleasant exploration of the rolling fields and wooded valleys of the South Hams. The section from Wembury to Ivybridge follows easy and well-signed footpaths and bridlepaths. The way crosses the Yealm and later the Erme, before turning north through beautiful riverside meadows as the path passes close to Ermington, famed for its crooked church spire. Here the first glimpse of the southern slopes of Dartmoor – Western Beacon, rising high above the town of Ivybridge – will give walkers an idea of what lies in store. Approx. 14 miles Day 3 Ivybridge to Scorriton The first section of the official Two Moors Way, and the most testing on the whole route. The old Redlake Railway is followed for 6 miles north, through barren and lonely moorland. The route then traverses open country, crossing the River Avon via a 19th- century clapper bridge and passing Huntingdon Warren, where rabbits were farmed from the mid 13th century to the 1950s. The pretty village of Holne comes as welcome relief!     WAR MEMORIAL Private Alfred John Phillips Alfred John Phillips was born in Morchard Bishop, as were his father, William Phillips, and his grandfather, Samuel Phillips. In 1889 William married Bessie Parish from Lapford and Alfred was born at the end of the year. They had a second son, William, the following year. William senior and his father were agricultural labourers and farm horsemen, so they tended to move from parish to parish. In the census of 1871 Samuel and his family were at Pitt Cottage, Thelbridge. Ten years later William was an “indoor farm servant” for Samuel Hale at East A(i)sh, Morchard Bishop: William’s place of birth was listed as Thelbridge. By 1891 Mr and Mrs William Phillips and their two sons were at Lilly Brook Cottage, Sandford, and a decade later at Uton, Crediton. Alfred spent his formative years at Sandford and Uton, and in 1911 “John Phillips” was a “horseman on farm” for Richard Webber at “Lower Gatehouse, Washford Pyne, Morchard Bishop”. Morchard Bishop parish and Morchard Bishop postal district were two different entities. Just after the outbreak of war he married Amy Steer, the daughter of John Steer, who had been a “horseman on farm” at Venny Tedburn. In 1911 Amy was one of four servants to a Phillips family (no relation) at Littleham, Exmouth. Alfred and Amy had one daughter; the family lived at Ladysmith Road in Exeter where Alfred worked as a baker. He was probably conscripted in the summer of 1916, as conscription of married men was introduced in May 1916, although he may have volunteered before that date, which allowed him to select his regiment.
