“The Morchard Messenger” “THE MORCHARD MESSENGER” THE INDEPENDENT VILLAGE NEWSLETTER www.morchardbishop-pc.org.uk No. 296 February 2020 SPONSORED THIS MONTH BY MORCHARD BISHOP W.I. MORCHARD BISHOP W.I. 2019 was an interesting and diverse year for Morchard Bishop WI. We had some brilliant speakers at our meetings. In February, Captain David Dorman gave us a fascinating account of his life at sea and told us many anecdotes from his travels. We had our AGM in April and carried a resolution to improve rural bus services and Mo Sparrow entertained us by demonstrating her easy system for cleaning silver. In May Homeleigh Garden Centre gave us a tutorial on hanging baskets and container planting. In July Rosemary Cook showed us the art of willow work. We had a particularly successful meeting in September when Richard Gibson and his wife told us of their charity providing water for African communities, a popular subject which attracted many guests. In October, a representative of the RNLI showed us films and slides of the extraordinary rescue work that they undertake. We also had some enjoyable outings and lunches. In March we celebrated our 92nd birthday at the Devonshire Dumpling, Mo gave us an account of the WI evening at John Lewis, which was so successful that it was repeated in October, and Sue Pluckwell gave a short talk on the food of Costa Rica. In June we had a Red Coat guided tour of the Bishop's Palace Gardens in Exeter, we were lucky to have one of the original guides who told us some hilarious tales. Our Summer outing in August began with lunch at Bickleigh Mill, followed by a fascinating tour of Tiverton Castle. Later in August we enjoyed a fun Croquet afternoon at the home of Angela Searle. In December, a group of us, together with some of the Morchard Maids went for lunch at Cote in Exeter, followed by the WI Carol Service in Exeter Cathedral, a lovely way to begin the Christmas Season. The following week we had an excellent Christmas lunch at the Mount Pleasant. We have held some well attended coffee mornings throughout the year which raised some much needed funds. In February, Morchard Bishop hosted the WI quiz with refreshments provided by the Morchard Maids. In March, we joined forces again with the Morchard Maids for the village clean up. As always we collected many dustbin bags full of rubbish but we were rewarded for our efforts with delicious soup provided by the London Inn. Tragically, in 2019 we lost Shirley Pope who was beloved by everyone and was one of our most loyal and long standing members. Our January Start-up meeting was well attended and great fun with a beetle drive and a quiz, followed by a delicious tea which was provided by Hilda Partridge and prepared by Angela Searle. We are full of optimism that 2020 will prove as successful as 2019. RECYCLING IN MID DEVON Dear neighbours Happy New Year! The extra recycling generated over the Christmas break prompted me to share some information on recycling that might be useful. In 2018/19, Mid Devon’s recycling rate was 53%. This is above the UK average, though the council still hopes to increase this to 75-85%. Mid Devon has had a policy of zero waste going to landfill for two years, and a compulsory recycling policy. Everything you put in your recycling boxes gets recycled, unless it’s contaminated with food waste. Rejected items, along with black sack waste, get sent to an Energy Recovery Facility in Exeter, where they are incinerated and converted into household electricity. And if you have a printer, did you know that your ink cartridges can be recycled in the roadside collection? Most ink and toner cartridges can be reused a few times before they need to be reprocessed. And then, up to 97% of their constituent parts can be recycled. You can put used cartridges in your green recycling box, ideally inside a carrier bag (not black in colour), to avoid ink leaking. Mobile phones can also be recycled – pop them in your green box too. And beyond recycling, there are lots of things happening to reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change. From local tree-planting initiatives to global collaborative efforts, these are initiatives that can also improve our own lives (e.g. by reducing energy bills or improving our wellbeing). At a county level, until early 2020, you can contribute your ideas directly to the Devon Carbon Plan which is currently being put together – visit this website to share your thoughts: https://www.devonclimateemergency.org.uk/ As ever, you can get in touch by emailing [email protected]. Here’s to a year of community and connection. Cllr Elizabeth Wainwright MID DEVON LOCAL PLAN REVIEW Modifications Consultation MDDC have nearly completed preparing a new Local Plan for Mid Devon. This covers the district outside the Dartmoor National Park for the period up to 2033. It identifies where new development can take place and which parts of Mid Devon will be protected. The new Local Plan is currently being examined by an independent Planning Inspector. Examination hearings were held in September 2018 and February 2019 and the Planning Inspector published his advice note in May 2019 in which he set out what changes are necessary to the plan to make it “sound”. MDDC have prepared a Schedule of Proposed Main Modifications to the plan and also a Schedule of Additional Modifications which are ‘minor’ and include clarifications and factual updates. There is an opportunity for you to comment on these documents up to 5pm on 17th February. Please note that comments are NOT being invited on the unchanged content of the draft Mid Devon Local Plan Review that was submitted to the Planning Inspector in March 2017. Further information about the Mid Devon Local Plan Review is available on the following website: https://www.middevon.gov.uk/residents/planning-policy/local-plan-review-examination/ The consultation documents are available to view online at www.middevon.gov.uk/PRMainMods where you can submit your comments or email to [email protected] or by post to Forward Planning, Mid Devon District Council, Phoenix House, Tiverton EX16 6PP. A great evening! At our meeting we heard that 8 members and Sarah Yendell (whose family have kindly given permission) planted 2000 bulbs (thank you Wendy for purchasing these, funding to be sorted later in the year) on the bank opposite the school, as part of our re-wilding project to support pollinators (DFWI 100 year anniversary initiative). Daffodils, bluebells, snowdrops, aconites and fritillaria were planted in a very random fashion….intentionally to create a wild look! Refreshments were apple juice and brownies. We will all be looking forward to seeing them flower in Spring 2020! Our February meeting will be Wine Tasting with Bruce Evans from Grape and Grain at the usual time of 7.30 at the London Inn. • The Devon Origins of John Pullman
The Devon Origins of John Pullman Patty McGregor racing John Pullman to his place of English origin was like fitting a square Tnail in a round hole. This is a task a blacksmith could accomplish easily. Using heat, a hammer and an anvil, he would simply soften the troublesome nail and reshape it. Fire and force are unsuitable tools for a genealogist faced with conflicting evidence. Contrary facts cannot be melted and hammered to fit; they must instead be resolved with diligent research and careful analysis. Nonetheless, as this unique case study demonstrates, a little attention to the ancient craft of blacksmithing sometimes doesn’t hurt. Family tradition offered few clues about the origins of John Pullman. All that was known of his early years was that he was born in Devonshire, England and had come to Canada as a single young man. When research on him began in earnest in the mid nineties, the starting point was the 1871 Ontario census index to heads of households and strays. The most promising index entry was followed up by consulting the full microfilmed record. This showed that in 1871 John Pullman was a lodger, boarding with a family in Toronto’s east end.1 His future wife, Mary Ann Beamish, was enumerated in the same household. The family with which they were living is believed to have been related to Mary Ann. Tracking John through subsequent census returns built a steadily more detailed picture of his family in Canada. By 1881 he and Mary Ann were married with two children, eight-year-old George and three-year-old Charlotte.2 Sarah, born a surprising 18 years after her next oldest sibling, did not appear with the family until 1901.

It outlines how design considerations in these areas can help to achieve the objectives of the Local Plan. Information and guidance provided under these special topics in most cases, refers to already established national guidance and best practice. Where this is the case additional relevant documents are referenced. While previous volumes in this document have encouraged a bespoke approach to landscape, settlement and site there are also a series of more generic principles applicable to good placemaking and which all development should have concern for. This series of special topics are areas within the Local Plan in which design has a key role in facilitating good outcomes. Other Volumes of this guide are applicable to the topics within this Volume and provide information on landscape character, settlement form, site situation (Volume 2) and use of design features (Volume 3) which should be cross referenced when considering the following topics.

  • The Two Moors Way – Itinerary
The Two Moors Way – Itinerary Day 1 Travel down to Devon. Arrive at campsite – The River Dart Country Park, Ashburton, Newton Abbot, Devon TQ13 7NP. The campsite has a number of exciting facilities that we may be able to enjoy. There is a licensed bar and restaurant on site. www.riverdart.co.uk The rest of the day is at leisure Day 2 Wembury to Ivybridge South Devon provides a gentle introduction to the Coast to Coast Walk. On leaving the coast the walker can enjoy a pleasant exploration of the rolling fields and wooded valleys of the South Hams. The section from Wembury to Ivybridge follows easy and well-signed footpaths and bridlepaths. The way crosses the Yealm and later the Erme, before turning north through beautiful riverside meadows as the path passes close to Ermington, famed for its crooked church spire. Here the first glimpse of the southern slopes of Dartmoor – Western Beacon, rising high above the town of Ivybridge – will give walkers an idea of what lies in store. Approx. 14 miles Day 3 Ivybridge to Scorriton The first section of the official Two Moors Way, and the most testing on the whole route. The old Redlake Railway is followed for 6 miles north, through barren and lonely moorland. The route then traverses open country, crossing the River Avon via a 19th- century clapper bridge and passing Huntingdon Warren, where rabbits were farmed from the mid 13th century to the 1950s. The pretty village of Holne comes as welcome relief! Approx. 12 miles Day 4 Scorriton to Widdecombe A picturesque part of the route, dropping through woodland to cross the Dart at New Bridge (ice cream van at holiday times!).

  • War Memorial
WAR MEMORIAL Private Alfred John Phillips Alfred John Phillips was born in Morchard Bishop, as were his father, William Phillips, and his grandfather, Samuel Phillips. In 1889 William married Bessie Parish from Lapford and Alfred was born at the end of the year. They had a second son, William, the following year. William senior and his father were agricultural labourers and farm horsemen, so they tended to move from parish to parish. In the census of 1871 Samuel and his family were at Pitt Cottage, Thelbridge. Ten years later William was an “indoor farm servant” for Samuel Hale at East A(i)sh, Morchard Bishop: William’s place of birth was listed as Thelbridge. By 1891 Mr and Mrs William Phillips and their two sons were at Lilly Brook Cottage, Sandford, and a decade later at Uton, Crediton. Alfred spent his formative years at Sandford and Uton, and in 1911 “John Phillips” was a “horseman on farm” for Richard Webber at “Lower Gatehouse, Washford Pyne, Morchard Bishop”. Morchard Bishop parish and Morchard Bishop postal district were two different entities.
