Brevard Live October 2010 - 21 near the end so I stay in it and throw caution to the wind. In a few minutes I’m seated in the balcony of a large au- ditorium and onstage is a man dressed in a black jumpsuit with a headset microphone on. He’s making funny sounds and talking to himself, and fighting with himself and some- times even making out with himself. I don’t have the first clue as to what’s going on, but everyone around me seems to love it so I try to focus and zero in on what’s happening. As it turns out, this guy is performing the entire first three movies word for word by himself. After a little research I discover he can also do all of the Lord of the Rings mov- ies. It’s bizarre to watch and even though I’m a Star Wars fan all I can do is wonder when and why he found the time to memorize every line in all of these movies. Then I won- der how much someone gets paid for something like this. Then I wonder why someone would pay. Then I wonder why I’m still watching this guy perform the ultimate nerd phantasm, getting paid to quote movies lines, and I leave. The next order of business is the droid races but I still have a bit of time and it’s almost noon so I pop on over the Hoth Ice Bar for some refreshments. G4 gaming network has put this little bar together and they did a decent job. There are ice sculptures, real snow on the tables and paid actors hanging out in snow suits from the Empire Strikes Back. The beer is crazy expensive, but it is beer still so my wallet gets a bit lighter. After the bar I head down to the droid races. This I’m excited about and apparently I’m not alone because the sidelines are packed. It was news to me, but it turns out you can buy body kits to make life size remote controlled droids just like the ones from the films- including R2D2. The tracks are set up like winding drag races and the droids are basically racing against time. I was pumped all the way up until the first race started and the droids took off from the line at the break neck speed of barely mov- ing. I seriously walked away from the race to check out a nearby vendor and returned to find the same race still in play. The announcer did his best to bring some energy into the mix with a play by play but it just wasn’t happening. Once again I’m on my way. Checking the schedule I notice a lecture about the rebel alliance soon to start in the east wing. Sounds inter- esting so I head that direction. Suddenly a tall slender latex form shoots past me. The girl who is accompaning me has a look of puzzled shock on her face. “Was that Adrienne Currie?”, she says. “Let’s find out” And we do, and it is. It’s Adrienne Currie the first winner of America’s Next Top Model. What she’s doing there I have no idea, but I ask for a picture, she says ok, we take one and that’s it, the end. And that’s the story of the time I met Adrienne Currie, kids. The lecture has already started so we sneak into a

22 - Brevard Live October 2010 couple of seats in the back and get ready to learn. What follows is another confusing moment for me in a world where I apparently don’t speak the native language. There is a woman onstage saying something about good boots being the most important item to invest in. Then she talks about quality of leather for a while. It looks as though there was supposed to a video presentation accompanying the boots speech because while the discussion continues there is a man next to her trying to get her computer, which is connected to a big screen, to show the proper graphics. Right now we are all looking at her email and that appar- ently was not the plan. I still have no idea what any of this has to do with the rebellion when suddenly the computer screen changes from email to a color coded map of the United States. Now I’m even more confused. I’m pretty sure America was never in the Star Wars movies, but I might be wrong because the discussion has now turned to the annex of New York in the rebel alliance. What is go- ing on? It takes a good deal of time, but eventually I begin to understand that I have stumbled into the meeting of a costumer club. It all makes sense now. As the day wears on I visit a number of sights and witness more than a few very nerdy, but also very fun events. But the best part of the day comes near the end when after an hour in line we are in the second row of an interview with Seth Green and the other guys behind the genius show “Robot Chicken” on Adult Swim. They even brought along Joey Fatone of N’Sync fame for kicks. I’m a huge fan of RC so this is a real treat and after all is said and done the best thing that happens all day is that I learn where the name Robot Chicken came from. They originally wanted to call it “Junk in the Trunk”, but adult swim rejected it along with over a hundred other titles. Seth and the guys were sitting around brain storming about possible names when they decided to order Chinese. On the menu they noticed an item named Robot Chicken and they thought it was hilarious so as a joke they sent it in as a candidate for the title. Adult Swim loved it and the rest is history. All in all it’s a good day, but I am honestly a bit Star Wars-ed out. Tomorrow is the biggest day of the conven- tion when the big man George Lucas will be in for a panel discussion. Would love to see but I’m on a one day ticket. Maybe next year, until then may the force be, well you know.

Food for Thought

or years now, I’ve been on a health kick of sorts. I Fcut down to 3 packs of cigs a day, I now only drink 2 pots of coffee in the morning, and I don’t eat after 10:30 at night (mostly because I’m passed out). After a few years of being on my own high-fat-high-cholesterol diet, which was working out pretty well for me, I decided to see what else is out there. In a world with a veritable plethora of diet fads, pills and solutions, I’ve decided to explore some of these for myself and come to my own conclusions as to which fits my lifestyle the best. Now, I’ve tried many of these fads that seem to come and go. Take the Atkins diet for exam- ple. Lot’s of meat and eggs and high protein stuff. That would be perfect, I thought. So for a month I ate nothing but bacon wrapped fillet mignon for dinner. For breakfast I would either have a grapefruit with bacon bits on top or just a package or two of bacon by itself. For snacks, chicken wings wrapped in bacon and deep fried! Mm- mmm…lots of protein. Besides going broke, I gained 10 pounds! What the hell kind of diet is this? It just didn’t work for me. So now I figured I have two choices: (A): just eat foods that have no nutritional value at all or, (B): eat only foods that take more calories to eat than they themselves contain. My first choice was option (A). Finding foods with no nutritional value was much easier than I thought. After all, almost everything we eat is laden with so many chemicals and artificial flavors and colors, the original food item is almost indistinguishable at this point. I mean, it looks like cheese and feels like cheese and almost taste like cheese, yet it called a “cheese food”. Does that mean it really isn’t cheese, just a bunch of chemicals put together to resemble cheese? One of the most notorious of these “foods” is my old favorite: Twinkies! So here’s what I found out. Twinkies consist of approximately 39 ingredients. They are made to stay “fresh” on the shelves in the store. This is accomplished by using ingredients that do not spoil. Instead of using milk, cream or butter, you can substitute cellulose gum, lecithin and sodium stearoyl lactylate. Yummy!! Sounds good already! Then there’s the delicious corn dextrin, a commonly used thickener, also used as the glue on post-

32 - Brevard Live October 2010 age stamps (Hey! How about a postage stamp diet?). Of course, Twinkies wouldn’t be Twinkies without ferrous sulfate, an iron supplement in enriched flour and vitamin pills, also used as a disinfectant and weed killer. How about calcium sulfate, a dough conditioner, aka a “food- grade plaster of Paris.” I’m getting hungry just thinking about it. Another good thing about the Twinkie diet is that if you get them on sale, buy cases of them. As long as they are in their wrappers, they’ll last for decades! It must be the polysorbate 60, Red 40, and mono and diglycer- ides. According to Steve Ettlinger, author of “Twinkie, Deconstructed”, many of the Twinkie’s ingredients are “more closely linked to rocks and petroleum than any of the four food groups,” but they still technically come from the Earth (many are mined!). Therefore, Twinkies are all natural! Cool! After a month of Twinkies, I lost 1.5 pounds, although much of this was due to teeth falling out. Time for plan B. There are actually foods that burn more calories than you gain from them. For example, a 1 ½ oz. stalk of celery is about 7 calories, yet it takes 30 calories to chew, digest and metabolize it, so you’re down 23 calories. Celery is just one in a group of so called “negative calorie foods.” Included in this group are tomatoes, apples, asparagus, broccoli, beets, onions, cabbage, carrots, cucumber, zuc- chini, oranges, pineapple, grapefruit, raspberries, lem- ons and limes. Speaking of lemons and limes, I found it takes approximately 15 vodka tonics with a twist of lemon to get your USDA requirement of vitamin C (I did EXTENSIVE research on that one!). So I guess if you ate 7 stalks of celery you would be down 161 calories. That means you could eat one Twinkie (150 calories) and still be down 11 calories! That works for me … try to choke down 7 stalks of celery and eat a Twinkie and you lose 11 calories per meal! Three meals a day x 11= a whopping 33 calories a day! I’ll be a rail in no time, especially if I can keep up my vitamin C intake.

I recent- ly made a short trip with some friends to Longdog- gers in Palm Bay to see what the fuss was all about. Walking through the outdoor deck, I was immediately transported from the always busy Palm Bay Road to a breezy tiki bar. Well... maybe not a Key’s tiki bar, but the feel was the same.

If you haven’t been to a Longdoggers, sat on their deck and chatted about past hurricanes while listening to locals....then you should. If you are not a local, then listen to those who are. They rave of this spot with good times, cold beers and some of the best food around. We made our way to an inside table while I noticed that it was quite a popular lunch spot. Enjoying the offerings were businessmen, blue collar, construction and anybody else that likes good food served in a timely fashion, which is a very good sign. They serve a lot more than just hot dogs. Although burg- ers, wings and dogs are the popular choices, I eyed the mahi mahi instead. It is served so many different ways; grilled over a salad, in a sandwich, as tacos or in chowder. They even serve it over rice and beans as their new “Tico Pico Mahi”, which I ordered. You can substitute it with grilled chicken for “Tico Pico Pollo” or seared ahi tuna if you like. One of my friends had heard about their fall off the bone ribs so that’s what he chose. Another decided on Bud’s Black n’ Bleu Bacon Chicken Sandwich - a tangy choice. All entrees were perfectly cooked and a refreshing change from the ordi- nary. We learned that the Palm Bay restaurant has some special nights. On Wednesday evenings the tiki bar comes alive with the caribbean sounds of Chester Murray on the steel drums. Things are go- ing so good for him that even he says, “Maybe I’m too content.”

Brevard has been Soloko’s home base for the last 51 years. Although he usually spends his evenings in dimly-lit clubs, by day he often surfs, a sport which keeps his skin tanned, his long, straight hair blond, and his body firm. He’s traveled, lived an exciting and interesting life, and has shared the stage with Larry Corryell, Jockamo Gates, Richie Cole, Ira Sullivan, and their ilk. Four years ago a Cocoa Beach internist, Sara Switzer, MD, walked into Heidi’s Jazz Club where he plays with the house trio, and they’ve been together ever since. He puts it this way: “I love music, I like the people I work with, I look forward to going to work at night, and I’ve met my goal to be supported by music. Soloko’s enthusiasm for life’s experiences extends to “The only other thing I ever did to earn a living was the people he has played with at Heidi’s, particularly bass fish,” says Soloko, his eyes sparkling with recollection. “A players like Jim Crutcher: “You can’t name anyone he hasn’t friend whose parents owned a crab plant in Titusville told played with,” and Johnny Powers: “It was a sad, sad day me about splatter pole fishing, a method to catch trout that when his smile was gone.” had been handed down from generation to generation. Burger Inn On US 1 Curb-Service Restaurant Got A Make-Over

hy is the frustrated burger icon WGrumpy Al suddenly so cheerful? All it took was a decision to not sell the famous Burger Inn. Bobby Q. Brown By Joan Bixby t’s no secret that many creative artists have a hard Itime making a living doing what they love to do, but multi-talented Merritt Island artist Bobbi Q. Brown seems to have found the formula for success. First, she invested a chunk of her early working life in commercial activities that prepared her for future free lance work. Next she turned to 5-year plans to help bring her dreams into fruition.

Her current plan, which she says she is “about 1 ½ years into,” calls for her to teach workshops on experimental wa- tercolor techniques both locally and up the East Coast of the country, write an instructional book on painting creatures of the sea and their habitat (which she refers to as “underwa- ter color”), and travel nationally and internationally offering painting workshops. A few years ago Bobbi began to deviate from the re- alistic style of painting that she was known for. Although she continues to paint realistic marine life paintings such as manatees and sea turtles, she has begun to get more ex-

A series of parrots flitting in and out of bright tropical foliage that she is working on for an exhibit in Sand & Sea Gallery during Trop Stock in the Village (the music festival scheduled to be held at Cocoa’s Riverfront Park from October 1-3) is an example of her new direc- tion. The painting is entitled, “Parrot Mania.” The se- ries of women on her website www.BobbiQBrown.com “Contemplation,” “Letting Go,” “Introspection,” “Reflec- tions,” and “Becoming” is another example. Born and raised in Ohio, when she realized that art had become her passion Bobbi moved to California and majored in art at San Diego State College. After gradu- ation she spent 10 years working as a graphic artist, got involved early on in computer art and graphics, worked with interior design, and became competent developing sales presentations. Her marriage to Chris, a real estate appraiser, brought her to Florida. Their daughters Chelsea and Kristin are presently in college and Alyssa is a sopho- more at Merritt Island High School. Bobbi is a passionate advocate of wildlife and is a vegetarian. When she founded the Art Gallery of Viera with Helen Wheatley and four other artists, she insured that the mission statement for the gallery included an ob- ligation to contribute to charitable causes whenever spe- cial events were held. As a result the gallery which will move from its current location to reopen this month on the Avenue of the Vieras has donated to causes such as Deveraux, Brevard Achievement Center and Very Special Arts. Recently Bobbi agreed to shave her head if a goal for Relay for Life was met. It was, and she did. The artist has scored magazine covers for her work, won many awards at art shows, appears in private and cor- porate collections worldwide, and has a one-woman show at the Encinitas Arts Foundation in Encinitas, CA under her belt. Her work is exhibited at the Metone Art Gallery in Alabama in addition to Sand& Sea and the Viera Art Galleries, locally. She teaches classes at both the Cape Canaveral Library and the Viera Art Gallery. One of her most recent projects is illustrating local author Sally Riedesel’s series of children’s mystery books. The books are being published under Sally’s pen name, S. Rosewell. The first detective book in the series, “Bebe and the Binoculars,” is available at www.Xlibris.com A children’s poetry book, “Time to Rhyme,” is in the works. The mysteries, aimed at children 7 to 12-years-old are solved by Bebe, the 11-year-old protagonist and her pet poodle, Matilda, with a little help from her grandparents. Riedesel says “I was lucky to find Bobbi. I have two more books in the series almost written, “Endangered Bird’ and “Abandoned Boathouse” and Bobbi has agreed to illus- trate these, too.” Send Bobbi an e-mail at BobbiQBrown@hotmail. com , or call her at (321)536-7773.

Brevard Live October 2010 - 43 What’ll It Be? By Matthew Bretz

eing a “starving artist” most definitely has its Bups and downs. The artist part isn’t bad. Pas- sion, excitement, creativity and impulsiveness are road signs on the path I have chosen. The problem comes when I run out of metaphorical gas on that path because the ‘starving’ part interferes with my free spirited plans. So what is a professional writer and musician to do when neither of his chosen ca- reers are paying the bills? Bartend.

For the better part of a decade I have been helping my fellow man work through the stresses of life with a glass of sweet depression and a dose of bar top psychology. It’s not a terrible job. I meet a lot of people, some who over time have become great friends. I get to be nosey about people’s lives from a relative station of anonymity. For some reason people like to tell their troubles to the beer slinger, and at the end of the day I may have, in some small way, helped someone. I love that. When I first got into the service industry it was a dif- ferent game than it is now. Back then the money flowed freely from the pockets of celebratory patrons. Everyone was living high on the hog and that meant that I was too. But over the last handful of years the economy has turned an ugly direction taking jobs and hours away from my customers. People started drinking for a different reason. This, of course, meant my income would suffer as well, trickle down effect and all that. But we are all in this mess together and for the most part my faithful customers seem to understand that. There are a few exceptions though and it’s because of that that I want to point out a couple things you may or may not have known about the person taking your order next time you go out to eat. The service industry is all about multi-tasking. Next time your company is looking for someone with the su- per-human ability to effectively execute ten tasks at once you would be hard pressed to find anyone more qualified than an experienced server. At any given time a server’s brain has the capacity to store and run more apps than your I-Phone. Oh yeah, it’s science pal. While you lounge about engaging in light conversa- tion about the latest goings on at the office with your co- workers, your server is about to explode from the stress level of a busy lunch or dinner shift. You sip your sweet tea and wait for your burger to magically appear in front of you which isn’t wrong - you’re the customer. But in the

44 - Brevard Live October 2010 ON LIFE THE BEACH meantime your server has to refill three cokes and a sprite at table 4, bring the guy at table 6 his fourth tea before he even orders, take a food order from five people at table 8 who want to rewrite the menu, make change for at least five 20 dollar bills, drop food at table 7 and greet a new table that just sat down and want you to know that, unlike everyone else in the restaurant, they are on their lunch hour and need their food in a hurry. If the server gets lucky, while of this is going on the cooks won’t mess up your food and it will be made in a timely manner. If not - well that’s a whole new set of problems. So let’s pretend everything went well in the kitchen and your food is now arriving at your table. Everything is per- fect and you are ready to eat, or is it? Right now I have to stop and make note of a big reason why servers get stressed and ultimately why your service might sometimes be a little slower than you might like. Extra trips. Extra trips are a huge issue with servers. An extra trip to the kitchen means that everything else on the long list of things to do in their head just got delayed and that’s never a good thing. Because while they now have to take time to grab that side of mayo that you knew you would want when you ordered, they might be fall- ing behind on delivering great service to someone else. This time you are the one causing the delay, but next time it might be you on the other end…just saying. Okay, so now you’ve eaten your burger. Your server suc- cessfully delivered your food, grabbed those extra sides you needed, found you some extra napkins and refilled your drink a few times. They might have even boxed up your leftovers and offered you a drink in a to go cup to take with you. They made change for your bill and cleared away your dirty dish- es. When you leave they will also wipe down your table and sweep underneath if need be for the next customers. Servers Photo by Misti Blu Day are typically paid about 4 dollars an hour by the restaurant to perform all of these tasks and depend almost solely on tips. So what are you going to leave? Let’s talk about it. When I was a kid and my parents would take me out to eat I would watch my father lay down a dollar or two as gra- taking a long time. You never know. tuity.
