She tells how Horne, after hearing of her plans for a research project that would explore the anticolonial activism of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), responded jokingly: ‘Well, that’s going to be a short book!’ (p.1). It is telling that Anderson opens with this anecdote. Bourgeois Radicals: The NAACP and the Struggle for Colonial Liberation, 1941–1960 represents a direct response to the work of historians such as Horne and Penny Von Eschen, who have produced ground-breaking studies tracing the anticolonial activism of African Americans throughout the twentieth century.1 It is Anderson’s contention that, by focusing predominantly on the actions of the black left, this scholarship has produced an historical ‘orthodoxy that has reigned for more than forty years’ – unfairly elevating those who embraced a Marxist-informed critique of colonialism and imperialism in the historical narrative (p.1). -

For additional information about this book https://muse.jhu.edu/book/10942 Access provided by The College Of Wooster (14 Jan 2019 17:31 GMT) 4 Shirley Graham Du Bois Portrait of the Black Woman Artist as a Revolutionary Gerald Horne and Margaret Stevens Shirley Graham Du Bois pulled Malcolm X aside at a party in the Chinese embassy in Accra, Ghana, in 1964, only months after hav- ing met with him at Hotel Omar Khayyam in Cairo, Egypt.1 When she spotted him at the embassy, she “immediately . guided him to a corner where they sat” and talked for “nearly an hour.” Afterward, she declared proudly, “This man is brilliant. I am taking him for my son. He must meet Kwame [Nkrumah]. They have too much in common not to meet.”2 She personally saw to it that they did. In Ghana during the 1960s, Black Nationalists, Pan-Africanists, and Marxists from around the world mingled in many of the same circles. Graham Du Bois figured prominently in this diverse—sometimes at odds—assemblage. On the personal level she informally adopted several “sons” of Pan-Africanism such as Malcolm X, Kwame Nkrumah, and Stokely Carmichael. On the political level she was a living personification of the “motherland” in the political consciousness of a considerable num- ber of African Americans engaged in the Black Power movement. -

INTRODUCTION AT ONE TIME, THE libertarian perspective on immigration could be summed up by the following mantra: “There shall be no interference with the free movement of goods, capital and people.” For example, states Engerman (2002, 76): “The nineteenth cen- tury was marked by a liberalization of flows of goods, capital and people, both internationally and within the nation.” According to Mises (1927, http://www.mises.org/liberal/ ch3sec7.asp): Under a system of completely free trade, capital and labor would be employed wherever conditions are most favorable for produc- tion. Other locations would be used as long as it was still possible to produce anywhere under more favorable conditions. To the extent to which, as a result of the development of the means of transportation, improvements in technology, and more thorough exploration of countries newly opened to commerce, it is discov- ered that there are sites more favorable for production than those currently being used, production shifts to these localities. Capital and labor tend to move from areas where conditions are less favor- able for production to those in which they are more favorable. Walter Block is the Harold E. Lincoln Studies at the Bicentennial: A Round Table Lincoln Theme 2.0 Matthew Pinsker Early during the 1989 spring semester at Harvard University, members of Professor Da- vid Herbert Donald’s graduate seminar on Abraham Lincoln received diskettes that of- fered a glimpse of their future as historians. The 3.5 inch floppy disks with neatly typed labels held about a dozen word-processing files representing the whole of Don E. Feh- renbacher’s Abraham Lincoln: A Documentary Portrait through His Speeches and Writings (1964). Donald had asked his secretary, Laura Nakatsuka, to enter this well-known col- lection of Lincoln writings into a computer and make copies for his students. He also showed off a database containing thousands of digital note cards that he and his research assistants had developed in preparation for his forthcoming biography of Lincoln.1 There were certainly bigger revolutions that year. The Berlin Wall fell. A motley coalition of Afghan tribes, international jihadists, and Central Intelligence Agency (cia) operatives drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Virginia voters chose the nation’s first elected black governor, and within a few more months, the Harvard Law Review selected a popular student named Barack Obama as its first African American president. Yet Donald’s ven- ture into digital history marked a notable shift. The nearly seventy-year-old Mississippi native was about to become the first major Lincoln biographer to add full-text searching and database management to his research arsenal. More than fifty years earlier, the revisionist historian James G. Randall had posed a question that helps explain why one of his favorite graduate students would later show such a surprising interest in digital technology as an aging Harvard professor. -

Control the Mississippi River to cut the Confederacy in half. Achieved with the Battle of Vicksburg in July, 1863 3. Devastate the South by cutting a swath through Georgia and then sending troops North through the Carolinas. Achieved through Sherman’s “March to the Sea” 4. Capture Richmond by annihilating the remaining Confederate armies. Finally achieved in April, 1865 by General Ulysses S. Grant II. The Civil War begins, 1861 A. Battle of Bull Run (Manassas): July 21, 1861 (30 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.) 1. First major land battle of the Civil War By the summer 1861, Northern public pressure demanded a quick decisive victory. 2. During battle, Union forces were near victory until reinforcements from the Shenandoah Valley led by "Stonewall" Jackson surprised fatigued Union forces. 3. By mid-afternoon, Union forces were in full retreat back towards Washington, D.C. -
