Bu etkinin değişik boyutları bulunmaktadır: 1. Mezunlar, adaylar ve öğrenci olanlara etkileri, 2. Öğrenci velilerine etkileri, 3. Öğretim üyelerine etkileri. Üniversite mezunları arasında işsizlik giderek artmakta, iş bulanların alabildikleri ücretler, yüksek öğrenim maliyetlerini ve fırsat maliyetlerini orta vadede bile karşılayamaz düzeyde kalmaktadır. Bu durum, üniversite adaylarının iş ümidini ve üniversiteye yönelik motivasyonlarını olumsuz bir biçimde etkilemektedir. Öte yandan, öğrencilerin, öğrenmeye yönelik tutumları da bu gelişmeden olumsuz bir biçimde etkilenebilmekte ve öğrencilik süreci, marjinal bir gelişim gösterebilmektedir. Böylesi bir durum, ülkenin entellektüel sermayesinin kalitesini düşürmektedir. Küresel rekabet açısından, bunun geleceğe yönelik olumsuz etkileri de olacaktır. Bu etkilerin bir diğer olumsuz boyutunu ise, rekabetçi entellektüel sermaye kalitesi düşük bir toplumun, kendinden daha ileri bir entelektüel sermaye yaratma konusundaki potansiyel yetersizlikleri oluşturacaktır. Veliler bakımından durum ise daha da kötü bir tablo çizmektedir. Kendilerinin erişemedikleri tüm beklentileri çocuklarına transfer eden ve onlardan üstün başarılara imza atmalarını ümit eden mezun velileri, ömürlerinin üçte birini hasrettikleri çocuklarının, üniversite mezunu olduğu halde, hala kendilerinde harçlık bekleyen bir durumda görebilmektedirler. İş bulabilenlerin bin lira civarında bir ücret alması ve aileye bağımlılığının devam etmesi veya bu ücreti uygun bulmayanların işsiz olarak aile üzerinde ek bir yük oluşturması, elem verici bir durum olsa gerek. Bu tabloya bakan komşu ve arkadaş çevresi, üniversite adayı veya öğrencisi olan çocuklarının geleceğini endişe içinde takip etmektedir. Kıt bütçelerden çocuklarına ayırabildikleri kaynaklar ise, velilerin kendi geleceklerini olumsuz bir biçimde etkileyebilmektedir. Öğretim üyeleri açısından, alınan ücretler, akademik hayatın sürdürülebilirliğine olanak tanımamaktadır. Uluslar arası alanda bir kongreye katılmak, varsa, tüm birikimini harcamak anlamına gelmektedir. Bu durum yeni yayınların takibi ve bilimsel çalışmalarını yeni kaynaklarla desteklemesi sürecinde kendini daha bariz bir biçimde ortaya koymaktadır. Sınırlı olan sanal kaynak olanağı da olmasa, durum daha da ciddi bir boyut kazanabilecektir. Emekli olan öğretim üyeleri bile, son yıllarda nerede ise, günlük maaş artış düzeyi kuruş düzeyine inmiş emekli maaşlarıyla geçinemedikleri için ek iş olanakları arayışına girebilmektedirler. Bu durum, genç öğretim üyelerinin ücretlerini ve iş alanlarını da olumsuz bir biçimde etkileyebilmektedir. Özetle ülkenin reel akademik hayatı ve entelektüel sermayesi, kısa ve orta vadede çok ciddi ekonomik sorunlarla karşı karşıyadır. Bu durum, küresel rekabetçi “akademik yarışı” olumsuz bir biçimde etkilemektedir. Dergimiz üçüncü yılına girdi ve bu sayımızda, makale konuları daha fazla çeşitlenmeye başladı. Yayınlamayı bekleyen makaleler sayısında da artış oldu. TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM, bu çeşitliliği sadeleştirmemizi öneriyor. Ancak, bunun orta vadede gerçekleştirilmesi pek mümkün görülmemektedir. Hele 1994’ten beri tekrarlanarak sürüp giden konjonktürel ekonomik kriz ortamında, her akademik alanda/kategoride yeni bir dergi çıkartabilmek, hem makale bulmak hem de mali yönü itibariyle oldukça zor bir durum olarak nitelendirilebilir. Değerli akademisyen arkadaşlarımızın bize verdikleri destek için kendilerine çok teşekkür ediyor ve yeni çalışmalarını bekliyoruz. Saygılarımızla, Prof. Dr. Muhittin Karabulut Genel Yayın Yönetmeni II ECONOMIC CRISIS AND ACADEMIC LIFE Economic crisis has got various destructive effects on academic life and these effects are observed in various dimensions in the components of academic life, such as: 1. Graduates, candidates, and students 2. Parents 3. Academics Unemployment among the graduates rapidly increases, and the ones who are employed have to be content with a salary which is not enough to compensate the higher education cost and opportunity costs even to a reasonable extent. This, of course, discourages the new university candidates about attending a university and afterwards having a good job. On the other hand, as this negative effect shows itself also in the learning process of university students, their academic life often ends up in a marginal direction. This situation, unfortunately, decreases the quality of the intellectual resources of the country, and in terms of global competition, it will definitely have even more negative effects in the future. Consequently, such a society with low competitive intellectual resources, will be inadequate in the formation of higher level intellectual resources. As far as the parents of the graduates are concerned, the picture gets even darker. The parents who have devoted one third of their whole life to the education of their sons and daughters are now expecting them to take a prominent place in their professions. However, these parents who have already projected all their failed aspirations in life onto their sons and daughters, inevitably feel frustrated when they find out that their adult children are still in need of pocket-money. It is sad to see that the ones who are employed are unfortunately low-paid and hence they are still dependent on their parents; and it is equally sad to see that the ones who reject low payment and prefer to be uneployed are a heavy burden on the shoulders of the parents. Anyone, a friend or a relative in the family, who looks at this picture, is worried about the future of all university students and new candidates. On the other hand, the parents who have already used up all their financial resources for the education of their kids, have to be ready to welcome a miserable life with lower living standards in the future. As for the academics, their low salaries make their academic studies hard to be continuous. Attending an international conference sometimes means for a professor to spend all his/her life- long savings. This, again, makes it hard to follow new publications and academic studies in the field. Thanks to (limited) online sources the problem becomes less harmful. Retired professors often fail to afford their life with their retired pay which is getting less and less every day, and thus they have to look for alternative teaching positions for additional payment. This has negative effects, of course, both on the salaries and teaching positions of young professors. To sum up, the present academic life and intellectual resources of the country, in the short or in the medium term, are faced with very serious economic problems, and this reality will be unavoidably reflected in the global “academic competition”. However, this year is the third year of our journal and as you observe in this very issue the journal consists of articles with a wide range of subjects. Also there is a rise in the number of submissions for our journal. However, TUBITAK ULAKBIM suggests reducing the range of subjects. Unfortunately, because of the conjuncture of economic recession, it seems not to be possible for us, in the medium term, to reduce the range of subjects and to publish a new journal in every academic discipline because it is very difficult to find articles in every field and to afford the financial cost of new journals. We thank all colleagues for their support and we are expecting their new studies to be submitted to our journal. The interview took place in Seattle, Washington, and was conducted by John Olbrantz for the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. Interview DATE: APRIL 28, 1983 [Tape 1] JOHN OLBRANTZ: Ed, can you tell me a little bit about your background, where you were born, your early childhood experiences, your parents, who your father was, who your mother was, how they came to live in this part of the country? EDWARD THOMAS: Well, I was born in Cosmopolis, Washington, and many times when I've come through customs, when I was much younger and especially at the Mexican border, they would say, "Where were you born?" and I'd say, "Cosmopolis, Washington," they'd say, "Look, bud! Don't get funny with us." (laughter) But there actually is such a place as Cosmopolis, Washington. Nobody had any particular influence upon me, I would say, in my younger years as far as becoming interested in art, and particularly teaching art. I had a very severe illness when I was four and five years old and was confined to bed a lot, and so people brought me tablets and color crayons and pencils and stuff like that.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ah.296 RESEARCH ARTICLE Buildings for Bodies of Work: The Artist Museum After the Death and Return of the Author Maarten Liefooghe Critiques of the cult of artists, life-and-work narratives, and the authority of authors over the meaning of their works not only unsettle the conventions of literary and art historical studies. They also challenge the importance of the artist museum and its architecture. Adopting Roland Barthes’ discussions of the ‘death’ and ‘return of the author’ of the late 1960s and early 1970s as a critical lens, this article examines how the architecture of artist museums reflects and contributes to the discursive construction of the resilient figure of the artist-author. To do so, the article compares the cultist make-up of the 19th- century Thorvaldsen Museum-Mausoleum (opened in 1848) with the resolutely work-centred museums of Van Gogh (1973) and Roger Raveel (1999). The architecture of the last two examples is significantly different, however. The Van Gogh Museum seemingly negates its monographic orientation, while the Raveel Museum amends a white cube logic with a reserved interpretation of artistic individuality and site-boundedness. Parallel to the institutional interpretation of a museum’s monographic mission, and the curators’ representation of the artist-life-work nexus in exhibitions, architecture is yet another element in a museum’s assemblage of an artist presented as a dead or revived author to its visitors.

Boring Membre de l’Association des Artistes Alpicois, Le Pecq 28 February 2019 Vincent Van Gogh arrived in Arles by train on Monday, February 20, 1888, with an idea to found an artist colony in the south “Wishing to see a different light, thinking that looking at nature under a bright sky might give us a better idea of the Japanese way of feeling and drawing. Wishing also to see this stronger sun, because one could not understand Delacroix’s pictures from the point of view of execution and technique without knowing it, and because one feels that the colors of the prism are veiled in the mist of the North.” Oddly and by happenstance, when he arrived, he found the countryside covered in snow, and among his first paintings were soft landscapes of snow covered fields. He found lodging in the Hotel-Restaurant Carrel, but his stay ended badly over a billing dispute after only two months. Vincent signed a lease on May 1st for a small four-room two-story semi-detached house on the Place Lamartine, not far from the train station. Its stucco exterior was bright ochre, and it became known by Van Gogh’s paintings as La Maison Jaune, the Yellow House.

Capotondi was bracketed with regular costar Fabio De Luigi in eighth place. Buy ranked nineteenth and Gerini twenty-third. The top male stars were mostly comics (including Alessandro Siani, Claudio Bisio, Christian De Sica, Checco Zalone, Carlo Verdone, and Antonio Albanese). See Ciak, September 9, 2013. 2. The majority of this criticism has been Anglophone, though see Grignaffini (1988). On Loren, see Gundle (1995a) and Small (2009); on Lollobrigida, see Buckley (2000). Gundle (2007: xix) mentions that male beauty could also be discussed, and cites Malossi’s volume on the figure of the Latin Lover. However, it is interesting that La Cecla in that book admits that “it is difficult to take the Latin Lover seriously” (1996: 26), and he is interpreted as a figure of slightly pathetic comic value, rather than as a symbol of the nation. All trans- lations from Italian are my own, unless otherwise stated. 3. Some films have been very controversial, and it is important to understand why. What is the difference between these and the cinema as an art form? Is it possible to inform and appeal to the emotions without being explicit? Is emotion itself, though often very intense, not ambivalent? Mit Beginn der Saison 2020/2021 übernimmt er die Position des Chef- dirigenten und Artistic Advisor des Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Der- zeit ist er Erster Gastdirigent des Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Artist in Association der Tapiola Sinfonietta und Künstlerischer Direktor des Turku Music Festival. In der aktuellen Saison feiert Klaus Mäkelä eine Reihe wichtiger Debüts, u. a. beim NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, bei den Münchner Philharmonikern, bei den Bamberger Symphonikern, beim Nederlands Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, beim Orchestre Philhar- monique de Radio France, beim London Philharmonic Orchestra und beim City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, und erhält Wiedereinla- dungen vom MDR- und vom hr-Sinfonieorchester, vom Minnesota Orche- stra und von den Göteborger Symphonikern. An der Finnischen Natio- naloper gab er seinen Einstand mit Mozarts Zauberflöte. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center.
