The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Unstoppable Czechs win Hopman Cup Petra Kvitova and Tomas Berdych won the Hyundai Hopman Cup title for Czech Republic after recording a 2-0 triumph over France in Saturday’s final at the Burswood Dome in Perth. Kvitova opened the tie with a 75 61 win against Marion Bartoli before Berdych sealed victory by defeating Richard Gasquet 76(0) 64. The two Czech players, ranked No. 2 and No. 7 in the world respectively, remained unbeaten in singles play throughout the tournament. “It’s really good to win at the beginning of the season and of course I have to say Tomas Berdych (CZE) and Petra thank you to Tomas because without him we wouldn’t win,” said Kvitova. Countdown to the Australian Open The 2012 Australian Open gets underway in just a week’s time with the world’s top players heading to Melbourne for the first Grand Slam of the year. Novak Djokovic is bidding to win his third consecutive major following his terrific season in 2011, which saw him claim the titles at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Rafael Nadal will lead the challenge along with Roger Federer and Andy Murray. Kim Clijsters lifted the women’s trophy in 2011, her first Australian Open victory and fourth Grand Slam title, but she missed most of the 2011 season with a torn stomach muscle. World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will head the women’s charge but will face stiff opposition from Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and US Open champion and home favourite Sam Stosur. Ashleigh Barty (AUS), Casey Dellacqua (AUS), Madison Keys (USA), Aravane Rezai (FRA), Olivia Rogowska (AUS) have already been announced as the women’s wild cards. Men’s wild cards so far announced are Jeremy Chardy (FRA), James Duckworth (AUS), Lleyton Hewitt (AUS), Jesse Levine (USA), Marinko Matosevic (AUS) and Ben Mitchell (AUS). The events will determine which nations advance to the World Group II Play-Offs, to be played 21-22 April, and which nations will be relegated to Group II competition for 2013. Two teams will progress from Europe/Africa Group I and one from Americas Group I and Asia/Oceania Group I. Page 2 The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Central American and Caribbean touring teams announced This year the Regional Association COTECC will be sending a 14&U and an 18&U ITF/Grand Slam Central American and Caribbean Junior Touring Team to the COSAT Circuit events. In the 14&U team the selected players are Djeri Jakara Raymond (ANT), Daniela Corina Obando Maldonado (HON), Atilio Jose Flores Castro (ESA) and Eduardo Jose Camacho Trevino ( CRC). They will be accompanied by coach John Goede (SUR) and will compete in tournaments from 16 January to 12 February in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. In the 18&U team, Victoria Rodriguez (MEX), Alejandra Cisneros (MEX), Simone Pratt (BAH) and Yolimar Ogando (PUR) have been invited to participate, accompanied by coach Guillermo Stevens (MEX). They will be playing in Grade 1 and Grade 2 events from 2 January to 28 January in Costa Rica, Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
