  • An Annotated Bibliography of Current Research in the Field of the Medical Problems of Trumpet Playing
AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CURRENT RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF THE MEDICAL PROBLEMS OF TRUMPET PLAYING D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School at The Ohio State University By Mark Alan Wade, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Document Committee: Professor Timothy Leasure, Adviser Approved by Professor Alan Green Dr. Russel Mikkelson ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music ABSTRACT The very nature of the lifestyle of professional trumpet players is conducive to the occasional medical problem. The life-hours of diligent practice and performance that make a performer capable of musical expression on the trumpet also can cause a host of overuse and repetitive stress ailments. Other medical problems can arise through no fault of the performer or lack of technique, such as the brain disease Task-Specific Focal Dystonia. Ailments like these fall into several large categories and have been individually researched by medical professionals. Articles concerning this narrow field of research are typically published in their respective medical journals, such as the Journal of Applied Physiology . Articles whose research is pertinent to trumpet or horn, the most similar brass instruments with regard to pitch range, resistance and the intrathoracic pressures generated, are often then presented in the instruments’ respective journals, ITG Journal and The Horn Call. Most articles about the medical problems affecting trumpet players are not published in scholarly music journals such as these, rather, are found in health science publications. Herein lies the problem for both musician and doctor; the wealth of new information is not effectively available for dissemination across fields.

No trivia or quizzes yet. Retrieved 6 December Noel had told us to prepare for success. Yet reading this reminds us that that was only the tip of the iceberg. The United Kingdom's leading radio station at the time, BBC Radio 1 , banned the track as their DJ Mike Read , taking the song name literally, believed the band "were trying to say something clever about [Lennon's murder], which of course couldn't have been further from the truth. Pauline Black: Absolutely. See all 5 - All listings for this product. I enjoyed the adoption story which is focussed on in the early stage of the book and again at the end when she looks for information about her birth family. Great book This book was a must read for me. This book is spot on in that case as you will get a perfect sense of why the Pauline got involved into 2-Tone once you find out details of hers childhood and the specific way she was brought up. I was amazed to find that her experiences mirrored my own. In August , the band convened at Coventry 's Horizon Studios, the same place they recorded their debut album, to begin "laying down possible new tracks" for the album, "guaranteed to bring on a fresh bout of arguments. I picked it up on a whim, figuring it would be a good summer read.

  • Punk Avant-Gardes: Disengagement and the End of East Germany
Punk Avant-Gardes: Disengagement and the End of East Germany by William Seth Howes A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Germanic Languages and Literatures) in the University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Professor Julia C. Hell, Co-Chair Professor Johannes von Moltke, Co-Chair Professor George P. Steinmetz Associate Professor Vanessa H. Agnew Associate Professor Colin Gunckel For my father, William Craig Howes. ii Acknowledgements In order to write this dissertation, I availed myself of the support and patience of a great number of people. Foremost among these were the members of my extraordinary dissertation committee, whose bracing ambition for my work was outdone only by their saintly willingness to read multiple drafts of everything that made it into the dissertation. George Steinmetz and Colin Gunckel provided outstanding guidance as the dissertation reached its final stages, encouraging me to pursue new lines of inquiry just as the old ones started to frustrate me. Vanessa Agnew’s keen readerly insights and stimulating conversation continually opened new doors for the dissertation; it was at her encouragement that I began to learn how to really, really listen. As co-chairs, Julia Hell and Johannes von Moltke provided inspiration and humor in equal good measure. Due to their expertise and wit, I felt none of whatever torture is supposed to attend the dissertation-writing process. This project, which is as much a product of their wisdom as of my effort, was in incredibly good hands all along. At the Archiv der Jugendkulturen, Fr. Antje Pfeffer was of great help; at the archives of the BStU in Berlin, Fr.

POST PUNK 198O When my interest in post-punk blossomed into a bit of an obsession, my mind fixed on two years: 1979, which seemed to have a disproportionate number of the period-defining all-time-great LPs; and 1981, which had its fair share of great albums by big names, but more significantly was seemingly endless in its supply of lesser-knowns of incredible quality and diversity. For this reason, I focused first on 1981 in the eponymous ‘1981’ box set I made between 2003 and 2004, that consisted of nine themed CD-length mixes and a whole additional mp3 “briefcase” disc, which in total featured hundreds of bands and artists. But I’d actually first made a 3-mix 1979 set for friends the year before, which finally blossomed into the (relatively) tight ‘1979: Post-Punk’ set from 2017. For whatever reason, I’d subconsciously always thought of 1980 as sort of the breather between these two different high-water-mark years. Finally, I’ve set out to delve more consciously into that elusive year of post-punk. The result of my reconsideration is this, the final box-set of a trilogy of explorations: ‘Post Punk 1980’. I could perhaps say a slightly lower proportion of my all-time favorite post- punk/new-wave/etc. albums were released in 1980, the kernel of truth in the way I’d thought of the year. But, unsurprisingly, the bigger realization as I assembled this collection was that 1980 was in no way, shape or form a down year. In fact, the explosion of quality-and-quantity nearly matches 1981.
