AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CURRENT RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF THE MEDICAL PROBLEMS OF TRUMPET PLAYING D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School at The Ohio State University By Mark Alan Wade, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Document Committee: Professor Timothy Leasure, Adviser Approved by Professor Alan Green Dr. Russel Mikkelson ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music ABSTRACT The very nature of the lifestyle of professional trumpet players is conducive to the occasional medical problem. The life-hours of diligent practice and performance that make a performer capable of musical expression on the trumpet also can cause a host of overuse and repetitive stress ailments. Other medical problems can arise through no fault of the performer or lack of technique, such as the brain disease Task-Specific Focal Dystonia. Ailments like these fall into several large categories and have been individually researched by medical professionals. Articles concerning this narrow field of research are typically published in their respective medical journals, such as the Journal of Applied Physiology . Articles whose research is pertinent to trumpet or horn, the most similar brass instruments with regard to pitch range, resistance and the intrathoracic pressures generated, are often then presented in the instruments’ respective journals, ITG Journal and The Horn Call. Most articles about the medical problems affecting trumpet players are not published in scholarly music journals such as these, rather, are found in health science publications. Herein lies the problem for both musician and doctor; the wealth of new information is not effectively available for dissemination across fields. -

I have always vaguely been a Dr Who fan, and although I don't think that stylistically or emotionally it has reached the heights that it did with Jon Pertwee, and even Patrick Troughton back in the day, I have followed much of the series since it came back in 2005. I lost interest half way through David Tennant's tenure in the driving seat of the TARDIS and only came back on board half way through whatshisface's seasons, but I have been massively impressed by Dear Friends, Peter Capaldi, who has brought back the curmudgeonly element that I feel has been Welcome to another issue of the magazine, which missing from the role in recent years. each issue I reiterate that I am not just proud to be the editor of, but that it never ceases to amaze me I lost interest in Dr Who for some years mainly that it has been going for so many weeks without because I had a lodger who was so irritating about a break. -

Last weekend I carried on my practise of recent weeks and watched a film that I really should have seen a year or so before. This time it was Love and Mercy the Brian Wilson biopic. Now Brian Wilson's career polarises people on all sorts of levels. And this movie continues this habit of polarisation, and this time the subject of the polarisation comes in the contentious form of Dr Eugene Landy. Over to those jolly nice fellows at Wikipedia. With a unique musical construct, the genre carries with it a deeply cultural, sociological, and historical livelihood which, unlike any other style, has adapted and changed through three clearly-defined regional and stylistic reigns of prominence. The music its self may have changed throughout the three “waves,” but its meaning, its message, and its themes have transcended its creation and two revivals with an unmatched adaptiveness to thrive in wildly varying regional and sociocultural climates. -

Suits and Boots: A Guide to Ska Style With New England summer winding down and cooler weather approaching, it’ll be time for all the rude boys to get their suits out of the closet and get set to look sharp at a show. Wait. What’s that you say? Rude boys? No, no. I don’t mind. I always relish the chance to nerd out about ska. In the 1960s, rude boys were either glorified or vilified in the poorer sections of Kingston, Jamaica. They were discontented youth, violent and prone to crime, and many ska and rocksteady artists of the time had songs about them. Tunes such as Dandy Livingstone’s “A Message to You, Rudi,” Alton Ellis’s “Dance Crasher,” and many more featured rude boy culture. Rude boys favored sharp suits, skinny ties and pork pie or Trilby hats. Think Dan Akroyd and John Belushi as The Blues Brothers, and you won’t be far off. In the late ’70s, the style was revived along with ska music by the 2 Tone Label and its associated bands: The Specials, Madness and The Selecter. The 2 Tone logo featured a cartoon drawing of a cool looking dude in a sharp suit and skinny tie nicknamed “Walt Jabsco.” The artist based the drawing off a slick looking Peter Tosh from one of the earlier Wailers records and thus the rude boy was reborn, not as a violent gangster, but as a fashion archetype and a label to describe fans of ska music. This era also saw the birth of the skinhead and the working class style of flight jackets, Fred Perry polo shirts and jeans held up by braces, rolled up to show off a neat pair of Doc Martens boots. -

Too Much Too Young
TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG A novel by Steve Piper - foreword by Neville Staple Steve Piper’s novel is a bumpy ride on the ska train. All aboard and hold tight! Beginning in 1979, it latches on to the explosion of the 2 Tone movement; Jerry Dammers its engine driver. Britain’s youth jumped on as it steamed through the cities; Coventry, Birmingham, London, Manchester... leaving no town or city untouched. Youth - best dressed in a style that lent hefty nods to Jamaican rude boys and original ’69 skinheads with trimmings of early mod styling and post- punk energy. Decked out in Fred Perry polo shirts, sta-prest trousers, tasselled loafers and Dr. Marten boots, Harrington jackets, second hand suit jackets; three button of course (even better if they were tonik and all festooned with button badges of allegiance they gathered). The rudeboys; in the streets, on estates, in shopping centres, in parks, at bus stops, at gigs, smoking fags, snogging girls and quaffing from the occasional elicit bottle of cider. This was the time when having cropped hair could get you suspended from school, at least, until it grew back. Their soundtrack was a hybrid; quite naturally, a mix of heavyweight ska and reggae from Jamaica, the funk of ‘60s soul and the political anger of punk rock. What other sound could groups such as The Special AKA, The Selecter, The Beat, Madness, Bad Manners, The Bodysnatchers and Dexys Midnight Runners pro - duce? Boasting ranks full of black, white,some older, some younger, male and female musicians, they all produced frenetic, hard edged, high octane dancefloor dynamite with a heavy bass heartbeat. -
