PCorresponding author 1ne¨ eR.Zu« hlke): e-mail: [email protected] This study aimed to identify the e¡ects of di¡erent sieve mesh-sizes on processing time, the number of species retained, diversity measures and multivariate community analysis in the North Sea. Samples were collected at 63 sites throughout the North Sea and washed through two successive sieves, 10-mm and 5-mm mesh respectively. Processing time for whole samples 15- and 10-mm fraction) averaged 91 Æ25 min compared with 55 Æ16 min for the 10-mm mesh fraction. Altogether 40% of free-living species and 9% of attached species were recorded exclusively in the 5-mm fraction. The majority of these species were rare. Spatial gradients of species diversity and community structure were identical, independent ofthe mesh-size used. Multivariate community analysis showed no signi¢cant di¡erence between descriptions ofcommunity structure based on fauna from 10-mm or 5-mm mesh. The use ofcoarser sieving mesh would save time and money, ifthe aims ofan epibenthic survey were to describe broad patterns ofcommunity structure and relative diversity. It would be possible to process approximately 50% more samples, ifthe time saved with 10-mm mesh were allocated to additional sampling. However, ifinformation on single species is required, then sorting with the ¢ner sieve mesh will yield crucial information. -

Branda a Port Erin Marine Laboratory (University of Liverpool), Port Erin, Isle of Man, British Isles, IM9 6JA, UK b Marine Biological Association, Citadel Hill, Plymouth, PL1 2PB, UK Received 23 October 2002; accepted 22 May 2003 Abstract Predator and scavenger aggregation to simulated discards from a scallop dredge fishery was investigated in the north Irish Sea using an in situ underwater video to determine differences in the response to varying levels of discard damage. The rate and magnitude of scavenger and predator aggregation was assessed using three different types of bait, undamaged, lightly damaged and highly damaged individuals of the great scallop Pecten maximus. In each treatment scallops were agitated for 40 minutes in seawater to simulate the dredging process, then subjected to the appropriate damage level before being tethered loosely in front of the video camera. The density of predators and scavengers at undamaged scallops was low and equivalent to recorded periods with no bait. Aggregation of a range of predators and scavengers occurred at damaged bait. During the 24 hour period following baiting there was a trend of increasing magnitude of predator abundance with increasing damage level. However, badly damaged scallops were eaten quickly and lightly damaged scallops attracted a higher overall magnitude of predator abundance over a longer 4 day period. Large scale temporal variability in predator aggregation to simulated discarded biota was examined by comparison of results with those of a previous study, at the same site, 4 years previously. -

In shallow water off the north coast of Sardinia (western Mediterranean) the frequency of occurrence of the starfish Astropecten aranciacus was recorded in 70 sample areas of 25 ms each. Four environmental factors, namely depth, average sand grain diameter, number of mollusc species, and number of individuals of the genus Echino- cardium proved to be related to the abundance of A. aranciacus. The sediment contained many species, each, as a rule, being present at low abundance. The molluscs found and their sizes are listed. Echinoderms of Asturias: rcantábrico 83a Expedition.- The Echinoderms found during the ex- pedition ~Cantábrico83% on the oceanographic ship CORNIDEDE SAAVEDRAalong the coast of Asturias (North of Spain) have been studied. A total of 21 species have been found between 42 and 728 m of depth: 1 crinoid, 3 holothuroids, 3 ophiuroids, 10 asteroids and 4 echinoids. Some other Echinoderms have been collected in the littoral of Asturias (Punta de San Lorenzo and Ribadesella) between 100 and 300 m of depth: 3 holothuroids, 3 ophiuroids, 4 asteroids and 1 echinoid. Most of the Echinoderms captured by the CORNIDEare first citations for this coast. The zoogeographical distribution and bathymetric range of some of the species is given. The unique existence of an atlantic-mediterranean area is proven, by the origin of the Mediterranean species. Most of the species mentioned are first citations in Asturias and one asteroid (Astropecten platyacanthus) is found for the first time in the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula. PUNIC ECHINODERM REMAINS Excavated from Tas-Silg, Malta C. Savona-Ventura Report submitted to the Department of Archaeology, University of Malta, 1999 The Tas-Silg Punic site is situated at an elevation of about 125 feet above sea level. This situation, together with the significant distance from the shore (circa 700 metres), makes it highly unlikely that marine animal remains excavated from the site represent shore wash. There are more likely to have been brought to the site by man. There is evidence to believe that since prehistoric and possibly classical times, the southeastern coast of Malta has gradually tilted towards the sea. The evidence for sinking during the classical period may be inferred by the presence of cart-ruts which cease suddenly at the edge of the water at Birzebbugia (St. George’s Bay) and cart- ruts which together with artificial caldrons occur beneath the water at Marsaxlokk. 1 This means that the Tas-Silg site was probably even higher above sea-level during the classical period than at present. Echinoderm remains were excavated in plentiful amounts from the site. The amount of fragments obtained from the site further suggests that these represent intentional transportation to the site by the action of man. Accidental transportation is unlikely to have accounted for large quantities of this marine animal. Two small fragments were obtained from the Tas-Silg Punic site on 22nd July 1998. The fragments represent 3 fused and one separate inter-ambulacral plates. The spine pattern of each inter-ambulacral plate is diagrammatically represented below. The spine pattern was characterised by large spines surrounded by a satellite series of smaller spines. -
