The literature on the birds of this area is excessively scattered, and one of the functions of this review paper is to provide bibliographic references to recent litera- ture of the various species, in order to make it more readily available to new students. Another object of this paper, as of the previous install- ments of this series, is to indicate intraspecific trends of geographic varia- tion in the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands and to state for each species from where it colonized northern Melanesia. Such in- formation is recorded in preparation of an eventual zoogeographic and evolutionary analysis of the bird fauna of the area. THE SOLOMON ISLANDS 14 SEPTEMBER – 7 OCTOBER 2007 TOUR REPORT LEADER: MARK VAN BEIRS Rain, mud, sweat, steep mountains, shy, skulky birds, shaky logistics and an airline with a dubious reputation, that is what the Solomon Islands tour is all about, but these forgotten islands in the southwest Pacific also hold some very rarely observed birds that very few birders will ever have the privilege to add to their lifelist. Birdquest’s fourth tour to the Solomons went without a hiccup. Solomon Airlines did a great job and never let us down, it rained regularly and we cursed quite a bit on the steep mountain trails, but the birds were out of this world. We birded the islands of Guadalcanal, Rennell, Gizo and Malaita by road, cruised into Ranongga and Vella Lavella by boat, and trekked up into the mountains of Kolombangara, Makira and Santa Isabel. The bird of the tour was the incredible and truly bizarre Solomon Islands Frogmouth that posed so very, very well for us. The fantastic series of endemics ranged from Solomon Sea Eagles, through the many pigeons and doves - including scope views of the very rare Yellow-legged Pigeon and the bizarre Crested Cuckoo- Dove - and parrots, from cockatoos to pygmy parrots, to a biogeographer’s dream array of myzomelas, monarchs and white-eyes. A total of 146 species were seen (and another 5 heard) and included most of the available endemics, but we also enjoyed a close insight into the lifestyle and culture of this traditional Pacific country, and into the complex geography of the beautiful forests and islet-studded reefs. -

Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. TRAINOR In June-July 2000, a 10-day avifaunal survey on Gunung Tambora (2,850 m, site of the greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history), revealed an extraordinary mountain with a rather ordinary Sumbawan avifauna: low in total species number, with all species except two oriental montane specialists (Sunda Bush Warbler Cettia vulcania and Lesser Shortwing Brachypteryx leucophrys) occurring widely elsewhere on Sumbawa. Only 11 of 19 restricted-range bird species known for Sumbawa were recorded, with several exceptional absences speculated to result from the eruption. These included: Flores Green Pigeon Treron floris, Russet-capped Tesia Tesia everetti, Bare-throated Whistler Pachycephala nudigula, Flame-breasted Sunbird Nectarinia solaris, Yellow-browed White- eye Lophozosterops superciliaris and Scaly-crowned Honeyeater Lichmera lombokia. All 11 resticted- range species occurred at 1,200-1,600 m, and ten were found above 1,600 m, highlighting the conservation significance of hill and montane habitat. These aggregations create dense and species-rich faunal “hot-spots”, attracting a diverse assemblage of local consumers that utilise this seasonal resource. The starlings nested primarily in poison-dart trees (Antiaris toxicaria) near the rainforest-wood- land boundary. Surveys underneath these colonies revealed that bird-derived nutrients massively increased densities of soil invertebrates and mammals (primarily wild pigs) beneath trees, year-round. Flying invertebrates, nocturnal birds, reptiles, and amphibians OPEN ACCESS congregated beneath the trees when starlings were nesting (the wet-season). Highlights included displaying King of Saxony, Twelve-wired, Superb and King Birds of Paradise, a beautiful Brown-headed Paradise-Kingfisher singing his heart out, and a rarely seen Dorias Hawk. Add to these Brown Sicklebill, Ribbon- tailed and Stephanie’s Astrapias, and an impressive collection of New Guinea’s endemic birds, such as Brehm’s, Painted and Modest Tiger-Parrots, Blue-capped Ifrita, Obscure and Crested Berrypeckers, Salvadori’s Teal, and Wallace’s Fairy-Wren, and you can see why this tour was a success. After a chaotic check-in at Heathrow’s Terminal 4, during which BA lost my checked-in bag, five of us collected free sandwiches and bottled water to tide us over on the food-free BA flight to Singapore. At Changi airport the following evening, we met Malc and Issy who arrived an hour later on BA’s second flight of the night from Heathrow. -

Editorial There has been a 7-year gap between the last issue of the Papua New Guinea Birdwatching Society’s journal Muruk in 2000 (Vol. 8: 2) and this issue, which completes that volume. It serves a valuable purpose documenting significant records of New Guinea birds, and publishing notes and papers relevant to New Guinea ornithology. Thanks are due to Conservation International’s Melanesia Centre for Biodiversity Conservation (funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation) for coming up with funds for the printing of the journal, with particular thanks to Roger James. The idea is to clear a large backlog of records, and publish articles relating to New Guinea ornithology, with the help of an editorial team: Editor - Phil Gregory Editorial consultants: K. David Bishop, Ian Burrows, Brian Coates, Guy Dutson, Chris Eastwood. We would like feedback about the direction the journal should take; it has been a useful reference resource over the years and is cited in many publications. Current thinking is to publish two issues per annum, with thoughts about expanding coverage to include other nearby areas such as Halmahera and the Solomon Islands, which have a large New Guinea component to the avifauna. The Pacific region as a whole is poorly served and there may be scope to include other parts of Melanesia and Polynesia. This parrot has an unusual reproductive biology where females stay at the nest hollow and mate with several males. Victor Emanuel Nature Tours 2 West New Britain, 2019 Planes took off and landed on time, customs and immigration was pretty speedy, and we were soon checked into our lovely rooms at the Airways Hotel. Everything went to plan, so we were well set up to spend the afternoon at Pacific Adventist University, a pleasant campus with several freshwater ponds and patches of scrubby secondary growth dominated by large Rain Trees that are native to central America. It is a great location to start a trip, as the open terrain and good numbers of water birds make birding easy, and there are quite a number of species that we typically only encounter at this location. These we found with little effort including a fine Orange-fronted Fruit-Dove, several Plumed Whistling- Ducks, excellent Radjah Shelducks, a nesting Comb-crested Jacana, nesting Papuan Frogmouth, and great views of Black-backed Butcherbird and the dapper little Gray-headed Munia. A highlight was studying the elaborate bower of the Fawn-breasted Bowerbird. Other species seen well included Wandering Whistling- Duck, Common Kingfisher, Bar-shouldered Dove, Whistling Kite, Metallic Starling, and Australasian Figbird.
