St. John's Cathedral "A Historic Cathedral"

St. John's provides a unique medieval experience. As you enter upon the red carpet, look up in awe to see the stone vaulted ceiling--the only one of its kind in Australia. First completed in 1910, subsequent stages of this cathedral are now being built. A Stonemason's Tour of the work is available. Three features of interest are the intricately carved by Tatters:) silkwood choir stalls; the four hundred tapestry cushions on the pews, designed by Queensland art students circa 1980, based on Australian flora and fauna and the baptismal font of 350 million-year-old fossiliferous grey stone. Modern religious art adorns the sidewalls.

Parliament House "Historic Political Site"

Parliament House, opened in 1868, was designed by Charles Tiffin who took inspiration from Parisian buildings like the Louvre. When Queensland Parliament began in 1860, Legislative and Council Members met in what was once the prisoners' barracks. Construction of the Parliament house started in 1865 and an annexe was added more than a century later in by Kgbo 1979. Linking the two buildings created a square which is called Speaker's Green, an open space used for ceremonies. Palms and jacarandas in the forecourt complement the stone walls that have mellowed with age. Visitors walking inside find lush red and gold leaf decor and a grand staircase. Along the walls on both sides of the stairs are prints depicting the early days of Brisbane. There is also a gift shop that sells souvenirs and memorabilia.
