In the decades ahead American education must face vastlyexpanded knowledge, improved research techniques, new methods of communica- tion, an ever increasing rate of technological change, ashifting Ameri- can value structure,and the anticipated influx into our educational institutions. These changes call for a re-examination of theobjectives of our schools and of the extent to which our curricula,instructional practices, and materials are achieving theseobjectives. Nowhere is this challenge issued more sharply than in the social studies. iii Chapter I PLANS AND PROGRESS The Social Studies CurriculumCenter at Syracuse University isone of a number ofcenters throughout the United States currently engaged in studying, experimenting, andpreparing materials for possible revi- sions of the social studies curricula of theelementary and secondary schools. If a widely accepted comprehensiverevision does materialize, it will not come about for severalyears. The various centers are occupied, for the most part, with severalbits and pieces of the whole. Practical limitations of funds restrict thetime and staff involved in these projects. Regardless of the amountor concentration of resources, the task is proving to be exceedingly complex, involving theintegration or co- ordination of six to nine separate disciplines. As its contribution toa revised curriculum, the Syracuse Center initiated a

    ÅA Wars in the Middle East are almost an every day part of Eero Junkkaala:of Three Canaan Conquests our lives, and undeniably the history of war in this area is very long indeed. This study examines three such wars, all of which were directed against the Land of Canaan. Two campaigns were conducted by Egyptian Pharaohs and one by the Israelites. The question considered being Eero Junkkaala whether or not these wars really took place. This study gives one methodological viewpoint to answer this ques- tion. The author studies the archaeology of all the geo- Three Conquests of Canaan graphical sites mentioned in the lists of Thutmosis III and A Comparative Study of Two Egyptian Military Campaigns and Shishak and compares them with the cities mentioned in Joshua 10-12 in the Light of Recent Archaeological Evidence the Conquest stories in the Book of Joshua. Altogether 116 sites were studied, and the com- parison between the texts and the archaeological results offered a possibility of establishing whether the cities mentioned, in the sources in question, were inhabited, and, furthermore, might have been destroyed during the time of the Pharaohs and the biblical settlement pe- riod. Despite the nature of the two written sources being so very different it was possible to make a comparative study. This study gives a fresh view on the fierce discus- sion concerning the emergence of the Israelites. It also challenges both Egyptological and biblical studies to use the written texts and the archaeological material togeth- er so that they are not so separated from each other, as is often the case.

Over the past five years I have visited wineries in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Oregon, Santa Barbera, Napa Val- ley, Rioja, Piemonte, South Africa and toured Australia. These trips have developed relationships with winemakers and further enhanced our winelist’s depth. As a result, we continue to host the worlds greatest winemakers in our ‘meet the winemaker dinners’. Due to our burgeoning list, we have recently converted one of the 2nd-floor rooms into a climate con- trolled and sealed wine cellar that now houses our collection in the correct conditions.

HOOGSTRA I REMEMBER IT like it was yesterday. Sept. 29, 2014, was a “summer-like” fall day in Washington, D.C. I didn't know what God would bring into my life as I started as presi- This Is the dent of the CCCU, but I knew I was called. I walked to work on 8th Street, just seven blocks from the U.S. Capitol, to meet my expectant colleagues. Greetings abounded as I entered, and I knew that in their minds, they wondered, “What will she be like? What Moment will the next year look like?” It feels like yesterday – yet now I’m starting my fourth year. You’ve experienced the same phenomenon – time speeding by. That first year, I often used the phrase, “Let's see what God does in one, three, five, seven, 10 years." The first year is always one of listening, observing, and analyzing; the following years involved acting on what I had heard and seen. The CCCU has refreshed its membership criteria, and we have revitalized our member services. At the last New Presidents Institute this past July, a participant said what they appreciated about the CCCU’s programs and services is that they are not merely transactional – they aim to be transformational, with Christ at the core.
