Gareth Jones, [email protected] Abstract: Phylogenetic analyses of four nuclear genes, namely the large and small subunits of the nuclear ribosomal RNA, transcription elongation factor 1-alpha and the second largest RNA polymerase II subunit, established that the ecological group of marine bitunicate ascomycetes has representatives in the orders Capnodiales, Hysteriales, Jahnulales, Mytilinidiales, Patellariales and Pleosporales. Most of the fungi sequenced were intertidal mangrove taxa and belong to members of 12 families in the Pleosporales: Aigialaceae, Didymellaceae, Leptosphaeriaceae, Lenthitheciaceae, Lophiostomataceae, Massarinaceae, Montagnulaceae, Morosphaeriaceae, Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporaceae, Testudinaceae and Trematosphaeriaceae. Two new families are described: Aigialaceae and Morosphaeriaceae, and three new genera proposed: Halomassarina, Morosphaeria and Rimora. -

In China and Japan Ganoderma lucidum has been used in folk medicine, commonly in the treatment of neurasthenia, insomnia, hepatopathy, nephritis, gastric ulcers, asthma, and hypertension. In this study we have evaluated the effect of Ganoderma lucidum on hematological parameters in Wistar rats. The extract was given orally by gavage at the dose of 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg body weight. The result of our study shows extremely significant increase in the hemoglobin level, platelet count and leukocyte count more specifically at a dose of 150 mg/kg of Ganoderma lucidum extract when compare with normal control group. However, at a dose of 300 mg/kg of GLE, significant increase in hemoglobin level and extremely significant increase in leukocyte count were observed. Whereas, insignificant result was observed at both the doses of GLE in case of hematocrit level, MCV, MCHC, MCH and RBC count. -

Lophiostoma, Lophiotrema and Massarina are similar genera that are difficult to distinguish morphologically. In order to obtain a better understanding of these genera, lectotype material of the generic types, Lophiostoma macrostomum, Lophiotrema nucula and Massarina eburnea were examined and are re-described. The phylogeny of these genera is investigated based on the analysis of 26 Lophiostoma- and Massarina-like taxa and three genes – 18S, 28S rDNA and RPB2. These taxa formed five well-supported sub-clades in Pleosporales. This study confirms that both Lophiostoma and Massarina are polyphyletic. Massarina-like taxa can presently be differentiated into two groups – the Lentithecium group and the Massarina group. -

LANE COVE BUSHLAND PARK by Ray and Elma Kearney The first Australian Fungal Heritage site In November, 2000, the first fungal heritage site for Australia, located at Lane Cove Bushland Park (LCBP), was listed on the Register of the National Estate, under the Australian Heritage Commission Act, 1975. Ray and Elma Kearney, members of and on behalf of the Sydney Fungal Studies Group Inc. (SFSGI) prepared the application submitted for the listing for Lane Cove Council (the owner and manager of LCBP). The submission was based primarily upon the total number of species of Hygrocybe found there, known unofficially to exceed 25, easily ranking the site as one of heritage value. Previously, in January 1999, two applications under the New South Wales Threatened Species Conservation Act, 1995 were submitted by Ray and Elma Kearney, on behalf of the SFSGI to the Scientific Committee established under the Act. The Determination resulted in the Hygrocybe Community at LCBP being legislated as an Endangered Ecological Community. A Final Determination is currently being considered on the second application that seeks to list at least six holotypes of Hygrocybe as Rare Native Species. Lane Cove Bushland Park (LCBP) LCBP is a site in the middle of a high-density residential area about 4 km from the Sydney G.P.O. Centred about a tributary of Gore Creek, the warm temperate gallery forest has an assemblage of at least 25 species of the family Hygrophoraceae (Fungi, Basidiomycota, Agaricales, Hygrophoraceae). The species in the community were formally identified and classified by Dr A. M. Young (1999). The following species have been recorded in the community : Hygrocybe anomala var. -

A Taxonomic and Phylogenetic Investigation of Conifer Endophytes of Eastern Canada by Joey B. Tanney A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biology Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016 Abstract Research interest in endophytic fungi has increased substantially, yet is the current research paradigm capable of addressing fundamental taxonomic questions? More than half of the ca. 30,000 endophyte sequences accessioned into GenBank are unidentified to the family rank and this disparity grows every year. The problems with identifying endophytes are a lack of taxonomically informative morphological characters in vitro and a paucity of relevant DNA reference sequences. A study involving ca. 2,600 Picea endophyte cultures from the Acadian Forest Region in Eastern Canada sought to address these taxonomic issues with a combined approach involving molecular methods, classical taxonomy, and field work. It was hypothesized that foliar endophytes have complex life histories involving saprotrophic reproductive stages associated with the host foliage, alternative host substrates, or alternate hosts. Based on inferences from phylogenetic data, new field collections or herbarium specimens were sought to connect unidentifiable endophytes with identifiable material. Approximately 40 endophytes were connected with identifiable material, which resulted in the description of four novel genera and 21 novel species and substantial progress in endophyte taxonomy. Endophytes were connected with saprotrophs and exhibited reproductive stages on non-foliar tissues or different hosts. These results provide support for the foraging ascomycete hypothesis, postulating that for some fungi endophytism is a secondary life history strategy that facilitates persistence and dispersal in the absence of a primary host.
