Meanwhile, here are a few notes. 11-29-16 Politics/Human Rights News Mexican Musings, Caribbean Winds and Border Destinies As 2016 approaches a tumultuous end, possible changes in the U.S.-Mexico relationship are cooking. The election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president, the apparent shelving of the proposed Trans Pacific Partnership fervently supported by the Obama and Pena Nieto administrations and statements from north of the border of cancelling or renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) are all generating consternation and introspection in Mexico. Mexican nationalism is stirring, with actors of different political stripes urging a reexamination of U.S.-Mexico relationships, defined by Proceso columnist Jesus Cantu as a “nortedependencia,” or a northern dependence, which put Mexico at the mercy of the economic forces steered by its powerful neighbor across the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo. While such talk is not new, it has taken on a greater urgency with the rise of Trump and his promises to build a giant border wall, deport undocumented immigrants and toss out NAFTA. “There has to be a total rethinking of the root of our nationalism, of our capacity, of our pride..,” economic consultant Rogelio Ramirez de la O told a recent Mexico City business forum.

MTV’s The Real World, a reality TV show that first aired in 1992, captures the lives of seven young people between the ages of 18-24 that are selected to live in a house together for several months. The show’s dramatic the opening title sequence, “what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real?” raises fundamental questions about the relationship of reality TV and the politics of representation, as well as about the relationship between the subjects represented in reality TV and its viewers and consumers. Ohman combines a critical narrative analysis with critical theories of representation and identity politics. In particular, she draws on queer theory and the work of cultural studies scholar Stuart Hall to examine The Real World show, highlighting how representation in the media has become a vital tool for viewers to help validate their subjectivity and subject- positions within the LGBTQ community.

A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF TELEVISION’S LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER IMAGES. words and images matter NETWORK RESPONSIBILITY INDEX TABLE OF CONTENTS • TABLE OF CONTENTS TK EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 3 ABC 8 CBS 10 CW 12 FOX 14 NBC 16 ABC FAMILY 18 FX 20 HBO 22 HISTORY 24 MTV 26 SHOWTIME 28 TBS 31 TLC 32 TNT 34 USA 36 MORE CABLE NETWORKS 38 BIOS 41 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The GLAAD Network Responsibility Index (NRI) is an evaluation of the quantity and quality of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgen- der (LGBT) people on television. It is intended to serve as a road map toward increasing fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBT media representations. GLAAD has seen time and again how images of multi-dimensional gay and transgender people on television have the power to change public percep- tions. The Pulse of Equality Survey, commissioned by GLAAD and conducted by Harris Interactive, confirmed a growing trend toward greater acceptance among the American public. Among the 19% who reported that their feelings toward gay and lesbian people have become more favorable over the past 5 years, 34% cited “seeing gay or lesbian characters on television” as a contrib- uting factor. In fact when Vice President Joe Biden endorsed marriage equality this year, he cited the NBC sitcom Will & Grace as one of the factors that led to a better understanding of the LGBT community by the American public. As diverse LGBT images in the media become more prevalent, the general public becomes exposed to the truth of the LGBT community: lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans are parents and teachers, law enforce- ment and soldiers, high school students and loving elderly couples.

  • Tony Isabella: Black Thought
Tony Isabella: Black Thought Tony Isabella wants you to know he’s ticked off. For years the industry veteran has championed positive portrayals of black heroes in the pages of comic books. In his Comic Buyer’s Guide column, “Tony’s Tips”, and on the internet he’s raged about the lack of ethnic diversity in comics publishing and the stereotypical treatment of minority characters. So it should come as no surprise that the seasoned writer has taken issue with events in the recently released Green Arrow #31. In his eyes, his most beloved creation -- Black Lightning -- was transformed into a cold-blooded murderer. Black Lightning/Jefferson Pierce sprang from Isabella’s imagination in 1977 to become the first African-American superhero at DC to get his own title. Gifted with electro-magnetic powers, along with a strong sense of community and Christian morality, Jefferson Pierce was designed to be an enduring symbol of justice. But over the years Isabella has watched his original character become distorted, even as he continually slipped on and off DC radar. Black Lightning’s debut series, written by Isabella, only made it to issue #11 before it fell prey to massive cutbacks in 1978. A string of guest appearances in other books such as Detective Comics and the Justice League followed before Black Lightning found a new home with The Outsiders, a street-level superhero team led by Batman, in the mid- 1980’s. After The Outsiders ended in 1988, Black Lightning was again downgraded to guest star status. It wasn’t until 1995 that Jefferson Pierce became a consistent player in the DC universe again.
