She was a radio DJ in Norfolk, Virginia and acted as MC for concerts with Kenny Rogers, Hank Williams, Jr., the Oak Ridge Boys, and many more. Among her other credits, Debbie is an accomplished songwriter. She has had her songs recorded by Wanda Jackson, Norma Jean and many other country singers. Brian Capps has been part of the Branson On The Road show from the very start and the Ozarks music scene for over 20 years. Brian plays upright bass and sings songs reminiscent of Marty Robbins and Hank Williams. Brian's latest recording reached the Top 10 on the Americana Charts and is part of the music rotation on XM Radio. As one of the best upright bass players in America, Brian has worked many Grand Ole Opry stars like, Hank Thompson, Tommy Cash, Stonewall Jackson, Wanda Jackson, Norma Jean, and Johnny Counterfit. Cliff Boone is the newest member of Branson On The Road. Cliff was born in Montana but grew up in the Ozarks. Cliff was part of the Branson music scene for many years and a member of the cast of the popular show "Hank Williams Revisited". WHEREAS, it is fitting that this General Assembly should recognize those gifted artists who have experienced great success in the world of country music; and WHEREAS, Constance June Meador, better known to her legions of fans as Connie Smith, was born August 14, 1941 , to parents Hobart and Wilma Meador in Elkhart, Indiana; she grew up in Ohio where she fell in love with country music listening to the Louvin brothers, George Jones, and Loretta Lynn on Grand Ole Opry broadcasts from Nashville, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, her love of singing was discovered in 1963 by singer-songwriter Bill Anderson. Connie was a housewife and mother with a four-month-old son in Warner, Ohio, when she and her husband went to see a country music show at Frontier Ranch near Columbus, Ohio. She was talked into entering a talent contest, which she won, enabling her to meet Bill, who invited her to sing on the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree in March 1964. A Conversation with Elizabeth Cook By Frank Goodman (7/2005, Puremusic.com) I admit it, a lot of seemingly everyday things are mysteries to me. But as I became more aware of and then deeply into the music of Elizabeth Cook, a new mystery moved up the list. Namely, how can you take a singer this great, with tunes of this caliber, who looks this gorgeous, and not be able to put it in the hoop? In this particular case, all the factors mentioned are in the extreme, so it seems like criminal ineptitude. It’s not that simple, of course. Her 2002 big label (Warners) debut Hey Y’all didn’t really see the exposure it was due, to understate the matter. It’s all too easy to deduce that it was considered too traditional, or “too Country for Country” as it’s come to be called around Music Row. On the other hand, Elizabeth’s authentically traditional country sound endeared her to the Grand Ole Opry and its fans. To date, she has appeared over 100 times on the Opry, more than many huge stars of the genre. I was fortunate enough to see her perform at a Billy Block show in town a while back, and was knocked out. Elizabeth’s manager David Macias is a friend, and he took me upstairs to meet her. She’s such a lovely and genuine person that it kind of bowls you over, you know what I mean. Her husband Tim Carroll was talking to a fan so I didn’t get to hang with him, but he’s also extremely talented, both as an artist in his own right and as her bandleader.

New and just in. Hillside Records Country Song Roundup $30 This is new recordings on the Hillside label with special guest and musical director in Justin Trevino. Justin is still on the Heart of Texas label and his 4 songs (of a very generous 21). I can’t say I have heard Kenny Seratt before but that is mainly through lack of material available more so than anything else but lo & behold if he doesn’t sound like Lefty, which is particularly weird on “Hank & Lefty Raised My Country Soul”!! He appears on 5 songs and none are less than sensational. What a voice!! Jerry Inman is also fine on three tracks. He was once voted the CMA’s Best Newcomer of the Year. Well he is close to the best on this. The remaining songs feature Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall and Ray Sanders in various trios, duos and solo spots. These are different to the “Texas Dance Hall Music” cd. Curtis Potter, who recorded a duet album on step One with Willie Nelson, is a superb Ray price style vocalist (as if I had to actually tell Y & T regulars) and is grand on “January, April & Me”.

Dec. 11, 1996--- A few years ago, I was walking along the main highway in Branson, Mo., lost in a ﬂurry of prefab celebrity music theaters. Then, what to my wondering eyes should appear but a quaint shop that featured beautiful hand-carved solid oak swings and rocking chairs. They were crafted by Bobby "Jingle Bell Rock" Helms. Helms, 60, has dabbled in wood-crafting most of his life, but he didn't take it seriously until 1984, when he began working in a factory about 100 miles south of his home in Martinsville, near Indianapolis. He has designed and built desks, gliders, swings, rocking chairs, tables and even solid oak caskets that he sold to a southern Indiana factory for a cool $10,000. "They were pretty," Helms said in an interview earlier this week from his home. "We'd put a hard ﬁnish to them, they'd be real shiny. Man, you could see yourself. The entertainers in Branson loved the gliders. Ferlin Husky bought one. Mickey Gilley, Moe Bandy. They bought them to sit out on the lake. Helms was in Branson for only eight months, working with Husky ("Fallen Star," "Country Music Is Here to Stay") at the Cristy Lane Theater. After he lost sight in his right eye due to an ulcer in 1977, Helms' woodcrafting skills were affected. When he developed asthma in 1993, Helms retired from woodworking because he cannot be around dust. "Working with wood was a way of relaxing," he said. "I could make a rocking chair in three hours. And I could see pretty good out of my left eye.
