2019-2020

Scholarships & Awards 24th Graduating Class Whistler Secondary

1 Application Procedures

Whistler community businesses and organizations have been most generous and supportive of the Class of 2020 of Whistler Secondary. These opportunities are available that recognize the value of continuing education, and the skills and interests of Whistler graduates. This booklet identifies the many local opportunities that are being offered to assist you with making your post- secondary education dreams a reality.

Please carefully read and apply the following important information to help ensure the success of your application(s) when applying for scholarships and awards:

 Apply for scholarships/awards in your graduating year only. If you are unsure of your status, please discuss with Mrs. Smart. Please note, applicants must be enrolled at Whistler Secondary for the 2019-2020 school year to be eligible for these scholarships/awards.

 Read the “selection criteria” and “selection process” for each scholarship/award carefully. Some require letters of reference and some require resumes. Be certain that your letter of application addresses the specific criteria for each particular scholarship/award as clearly as possible. For example, if the criterion includes “citizenship qualities”, then you must identify how you have demonstrated citizenship qualities during your secondary school tenure. If the criteria states “Preference will be given to a student pursuing a career in the tourism industry”, you should briefly explain why you have an interest in that area and suggest how you plan to achieve your goal. If you have any experience in your selected field, that would also be relevant.

 In general terms, “superior academic achievement” indicates an “A” average overall, or for the subject area specified: “Strong academic achievement indicates a “B” average or better.

2  Avoid writing a general letter of application and submitting the exact same letter for several different scholarships/awards. Submitting general letters of application could result in your application being rejected, since there is no clear indication how specific criteria have been met. Some of the paragraphs may be the same because that information won’t change, but be sure to address the criteria. It is a good idea to keep your career goal consistent in all of your application letters.

 There is no limit to the number of scholarships/awards you may apply for, however, please keep in mind the stronger your application package, the more time it will take you to prepare each one. We recommend a maximum of 10 – 15 applications be submitted. Please do NOT submit each scholarship/award letter in its own envelope, just the letter itself. All applications, unless otherwise noted, must be submitted to Mrs. Smart.

 Never under-estimate the possible success of your applications or your achievements, interests, and accomplishments. Each year some scholarships/awards are not awarded because no one has applied.

Hard copies of the application letters must be given to Mrs. Smart and filed in the corresponding scholarships folder in the counselling area AND LETTERS MUST ALSO BE EMAILED TO: [email protected]. The applicant’s name must be in the subject line of the email and each scholarship letter should be a separate attachment (in the same email) with the student’s name and the scholarship name in the attachment subject line.

 THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATIONS, BOTH E-MAILED AND HARD COPY, IS 3:15 PM, MONDAY, MARCH 30 , 2020. We recommend you not leave these letters until the last minute to complete. This deadline is firm, applications received after March 30th, 2020 will not be considered.

 Students must submit their Social Insurance Number in the email with their applications. If we do not have your SIN, we are not able to issue you your scholarship cheque.

Successful applicants will be awarded at the Grade 12 Graduation Ceremony. Cheques will be issued to students in the fall once proof of post-secondary attendance is received. Students will be notified one week prior to the ceremony if they can expect to receive an award.

It is expected that successful applicants will personally thank and regularly correspond with their sponsors during their post-secondary academic year, indicating their progress and successes!

Frequently Asked Questions

Not sure if you will be attending post secondary this fall?

Unless otherwise noted, all scholarships and awards are valid for 15 months from graduation, or until September 2021.

Not sure if it’s worth the time applying for any scholarships or awards?

Consider that to earn the equivalent of a $1,000 scholarship, you would have to work for 40 hours a week for 2 ½ weeks earning $12 per hour.

What does “financial need” mean?

Attending post-secondary is a big expense, particularly for students in Whistler. Indicate in your application letter what initiatives you are taking to help offset your post-secondary costs. Your application will be evaluated based on all criteria identified & what effort you are making to contribute.

Why do we need your Social Insurance Number?

When you file your income tax, the government requires you to identify your educational revenue and expenses. Scholarships/Awards are now identified as educational revenue and as such could be taxed.

Whistler’s VIP’s

Many dedicated, enthusiastic, and talented people have contributed to the success of our community. Arts Whistler Presents: The Chili Thom Experience lit up 5 of Whistler’s cultural buildings with Chili’s art and soul: The Audain Art Museum, Maury Young Arts Centre, Whistler Museum, The Whistler Public Library and the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. The Chili Thom Memorial Scholarship supports students and/or community members in the Sea to Sky Community who are pursuing the brave, expressive and divine calling of being a professional artist. That same year, the Dennehys created the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation to help those that suffer from depression as well as their friends and family. Tragedy hit the Dennehy family again in 2009 when Riley died of a heart attack from strong medication prescribed to manage the pain for a separated shoulder. There were no roads, no electricity, no running water, no television. Walter fell in love with the mountain and made a commitment to be an active member of the community. He exemplified citizenship as a founding member of the Rotary Club, the Whistler Chamber of Commerce, the T.V. Society, and the Whistler Fire Department.
