Despite being able to 'see' through prescience, doubts began to surface in Paul's mind regarding his interpretation of the future. Feeling increasingly frustrated and out of control, he began to seek a way out. That escape route emerged through the combined treachery of his enemies, a plot conceived in the presence of a powerful Guild Navigator. The Bene Tleilax gave him a ghola of Duncan Idaho , who contained a secret trigger. Concurrently, and part of the plan, Irulan slowly poisoned Chani. As the Princesses' toxins slowly worked their way through Chani's body, the Emperor's Consort died during childbirth. Immediately, the Face Dancer Scytale , who had been posing as Chani's hand-maid sprung into action, and caused the Idaho ghola to remember his Tleilaxu mission, to kill Muad'Dib. As this caused a great mental conflict within Duncan, he remembered his past with House Atreides. Immediately, Scytale realized the great scope of change that had occurred, a ghola had recovered memories of its' former life. Scytale bargained with Paul that the Tleilaxu could bring back a ghola of Chani, complete with her life experiences, for Paul to enjoy in relative obscurity—if Atreides would abdicate. Instead, Paul killed Scytale. After the birth of his children, Ghanima and Leto , Paul became convinced he had lost his prescient abilities; he did not foresee the birth of his daughter, only his son. Therefore, as no more than a blind Fremen, Paul disappeared into the desert, offering himself up to Shai-Hulud , as was the Fremen custom for the blind. This action made a powerful statement: it signified to the Fremen that Paul's interest was for the tribe, and that even he, Usul, Paul who was Muad'Dib, was not above Fremen law. Many years after his apparent death alone in the desert, and while the Atreides Empire was under the regency of his younger sister Alia Atreides , a new figure, The Preacher , appeared from the deep desert. By urging civil disobedience against the Atreides Empire , and warning of the consequences of a green Arrakis , The Preacher attracted an ever increasing number of followers. Many believed this thundering blind stranger to be Paul Atreides, as he was blind and led by a boy. The Preacher eventually revealed himself to his son Leto, and the two of them travelled throughout Arrakis, breaching the water storage of every sietch so that it would spill out onto the sand. Eventually Leto and the Preacher returned to Arrakeen to confront Alia, who had clearly shown herself to be Abomination by this time. Eventually rising tensions saw Alia commit suicide in front of her mother and Duncan Idaho. During the ensuing chaos, The Preacher was assassinated in Arrakeen , but not before he had revealed beyond a doubt to Gurney Halleck and Jessica that he was indeed Paul Atreides. Thus, the great Paul Atreides, son of Leto the Just and the first Atreides to ascend to the Golden Lion Throne since its inception more than ten thousand years prior, was dead, passing into legend for eons to come, laying the way forward for his son to take the Golden Path to its logical conclusion. While Paul envisioned the Golden Path, the ultimate transformation that would see his humanity dissolve into a sandworm frightened him. Upon revealing himself to his son, Paul confessed that his desire to maintain his humanity, and the fear of abject loneliness that the Golden Path would bring, were too much for him. He related that he walked away from what he knew he had to do, and admired but lamented for his son who had taken on the mantle that would see humanity restored, but at the cost of his own. In his youth Paul was a small boy, with an oval face, coal- colored and tousled hair and green eyes. After his time among the Fremen he grew to a a stringy whipcord of a youth, not as desiccated as the Arrakeen natives, but with ribs there to count, and sunken in the flanks so that the ripple and gather of muscles could be followed under the leathery skin He had a thin, disdainful nose, long lashes concealing lime-toned, directly staring green eyes, and a hardness in the expression like the old Duke his paternal grandfather. However in Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's prequel novel Dune: House Corrino , his birth takes place on Kaitain. In Paul of Dune , it is asserted that Irulan, through her history books, "streamlined the story for mass consumption". This alleviates any concern for inconsistency between the two accounts and maintains the canonical status of the original Dune. In interviews, MacLachlan related that when reading Dune for the first time as a teenager, he imagined himself as being Paul Atreides, and to be provided the opportunity to portray him in a big budget film was a dream come true for him. The actor, who has a Scottish accent, reportedly adapted an American accent in a relatively short span of time just to land the role. In the miniseries, Paul was initially portrayed as a sort of "spoiled brat" in order to show the audience his growth from Atreides heir to Emperor of the Known universe. This wiki. It was out of her love that Jessica gave Leto the son he wished for, instead of the daughter she was ordered by the Sisterhood to conceive. She then spent all of Paul's life training him in the secret ways of the Bene Gesserit, another instruction from her Sisterhood that she chose to disobey. A warrior with the heart of a poet, Gurney is rarely found without his baliset nearby. He seemingly has a quote or a song for every occasion and his talents are frequently called upon to ease tensions and soothe spirits. Despite his artful soul, Gurney is a powerful and feared combatant. He learned to fight for his life in House Harkonnen's slave pits. Leto rescued Gurney from that life and Gurney has been loyal to House Atreides ever since. He's taken a particular shine to Paul over their many hours of training, caring for him as much as he does Leto. A swordmaster and one of the finest soldiers in service to House Atreides, Duncan frequently serves as Leto's right-hand man. Because he's younger than most of the Duke's other close counsel, he formed a particularly strong, almost brotherly bond with Paul. He also trained Paul in combat, teaching him approaches that favored finesse as opposed to Gurney's more practical lethality. Leto considers Duncan the finest example of what House Atreides stands for and is relying on him to make a good impression with the wary and dangerous Fremen. As House Atreides' Master of Assassins, the grizzled veteran Thufir has served the noble family for the three generations. Thufir is a Mentat, a human raised and trained to be a living computer. Using his incredible capacity for calculation, it's his job to keep his Duke free from conspiracy and espionage, while simultaneously operating his own network of spies as well. Paranoid, terse, unrelenting and overbearing, Thufir took great care in meticulously educating and preparing Paul for his future as the next Duke. He fears he is finally getting too old to be effective, despite Leto's opinion otherwise. He has a particular distrust and poor opinion of the Bene Gesserit and as a result, has always had a tense relationship with Jessica. He suffers her presence only for the sake of his Duke. A graduate of the Suk School of medicine and branded with a diamond tattoo signifying his imperial conditioning, Dr. Yueh is supposed to be beyond reproach. The imperial conditioning supposedly means his duty to protect life is so deeply ingrained that he may be trusted enough to treat the Emperor himself. In addition to being House Atreides' physician, he is one of Paul's teachers, focusing on the less martial subjects of science, history, anthropology and mathematics. A reserved, mild-mannered man, he carries with him a perpetual sadness. His wife, Wanna, was taken captive and believed killed by their enemies, House Harkonnen. He admires and loves House Atreides, but carries a dark secret that threatens to bring doom to them all. Dune Messiah - Wikipedia In 's Sandworms of Dune , the young Paul ghola ultimately duels Paolo. Paul is mortally wounded, but the trauma restores his original memories and he manages to heal himself. A power-hungry Paolo overdoses on ultraspice , an incredibly potent form of melange, and falls into a catatonic state. Later on the recovering planet Dune, the awakened gholas of Paul and Chani have reverted to the ways of the ancient Fremen, resolving to lead simple lives and restore the planet to its former glory. Paul reaffirms his love for Chani, telling her he has loved her for five thousand years. Anderson prequel novel Dune: House Corrino Lawrence employed guerrilla tactics to destroy enemy forces and communication lines, and came close to becoming a messiah figure for the Arabs. This historical event led Frank Herbert to consider the possibility of an outsider leading native forces against the morally corrupt occupiers of a desert world, in the process becoming a godlike figure to them. Throughout Paul's rise to superhuman status, he follows a plotline common to many stories describing the birth of a hero.

Chapterhouse: Dune Frank Herbert April 1985 Those who would repeat the past must control the teaching of history. -Bene Gesserit Coda When the ghola-baby was delivered from the first Bene Gesserit axlotl tank, Mother Superior Darwi Odrade ordered a quiet celebration in her private dining room atop Central. It was barely dawn, and the two other members of her Council -- Tamalane and Bellonda -- showed impatience at the summons, even though Odrade had ordered breakfast served by her personal chef. "It isn't every woman who can preside at the birth of her own father," Odrade quipped when the others complained they had too many demands on their time to permit of "time-wasting nonsense." Only aged Tamalane showed sly amusement. Bellonda held her over-fleshed features expressionless, often her equivalent of a scowl. Was it possible, Odrade wondered, that Bell had not exorcised resentment of the relative opulence in Mother Superior's surroundings? Odrade's quarters were a distinct mark of her position but the distinction represented her duties more than any elevation over her Sisters. The small dining room allowed her to consult aides during meals. Bellonda glanced this way and that, obviously impatient to be gone. Much effort had been expended without success in attempts to break through Bellonda's coldly remote shell. "It felt very odd to hold that baby in my arms and think: This is my father," Odrade said. "I heard you the first time!" Bellonda spoke from the belly, almost a baritone rumbling as though each word caused her vague indigestion. She understood Odrade's wry jest, though.

  • The Blackness of Liet-Kynes: Reading Frank Herbert's Dune Through
religions Article The Blackness of Liet-Kynes: Reading Frank Herbert’s Dune Through James Cone Peter Herman Theology & Religious Studies, Marymount University, Arlington, VA 22207, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 August 2018; Accepted: 17 September 2018; Published: 18 September 2018 Abstract: Frank Herbert’s landmark science fiction novel Dune has received numerous sequels, prequels, and film treatments. Detailing the saga of humanity’s far future beyond our present solar system, the work plays successfully with religious, political, and ecological themes. This essay deals with the social/theological implications of two figures within the story-world of Dune: Its protagonist and visible hero, Paul Atreides/Muad’Dib and the lesser figure of the “Imperial Planetologist” Dr. Kynes, also known to the Fremen as “Liet”. By reading these two figures through the theology of James Cone, we discover that the obvious hero is not a messianic figure but a demonic one. Further, it is the lesser character of Liet-Kynes who actually fulfills the messianic role in Cone’s theological system. This essay is preceded by and makes use of Jeremy Ian Kirk’s work with the film Avatar that provides similar analysis. Where Kirk’s principal concern is with the ethical considerations of Avatar, this essay will more closely bear on Cone’s dynamic of redemption and conversion, specifically his notion of dying to white identity to be reborn in blackness. Keywords: theology; whiteness; black liberation; liberation theology; soteriology; salvation 1. Introduction Frank Herbert’s six Dune novels provide an amazing and detailed view of a possible future for the human race among the stars.1 The world-building in which he engaged spans thousands of years and billions of miles in his speculative future version of our known universe.2 Religion, specifically the often cynical manipulations of the Bene Geserit Sisterhood, plays a role in the narrative.

  • Feminism, Technology and Cyborg's in Frank Herbert's Dune
Women of the Future: Gender, Technology, and Cyborgs in Frank Herbert’s Dune Mémoire Carrie Lynn Evans Maîtrise en littératures d’expression anglaise Maître ès arts (M.A.)

Mythmoot III: Ever On Proceedings of the 3rd Mythgard Institute Mythmoot BWI Marriott, Linthicum, Maryland January 10-11, 2015 Foundation and Dune or, Hari Seldon and the Golden Path Neil A. Ottenstein and Phillip Menzies Introduction The idea of there being a similarity between the Dune novels by Frank Herbert and Foundation series by Isaac Asimov became apparent during one of the Mythgard Academy classes on Dune led by Corey Olsen. During this class we examined in great detail what Paul Atreides was experiencing when his ability to see the future started to surface in his consciousness. In describing the mechanics of Paul’s view of the future it became clear that Paul was not “seeing” the future in any kind of mystical way. This view of seeing the future reminded some participants in the class of Psychohistory as put forward by Hari Seldon in the Foundation series. In this series Psychohistory was entirely based upon science and mathematics once again totally unrelated to mysticism or magic in any way. This paper will look at these two methods of foretelling or predicting the future by describing and comparing what was experienced by Paul and the Psychohistorians. It will also examine the mechanics of “seeing” the future. We are able to do this because these abilities were rational based on science, mathematics, observation and extrapolation and totally explainable unlike magic or metaphysical forces. Both novels also described limitations to seeing the future by showing that some things were not able to be seen and anticipated. We will examine this by venturing into the sequel Foundation and Empire.

Luis Felipe Torres Meza Kt.: 250786-3959 Leiðbeinendur: Matthew Whelpton og Valgerður Guðrún Bjarkadóttir December 2010 T. Meza 3 Abstract. The following is a work of literary analysis involving Frank Herbert’s Dune, which is the first published tome of what later became known as the Dune Chronicles. The Chronicles comprise six books authored by Frank Herbert many of which are referred to here, but this work centres only on Dune. This literary analysis focuses on the Bene Gesserit, an organization of women which plays a large part in the development of Herbert’s novel. The main objective of the discussion is to describe this conglomerate of characters and analyse it as one single collective character with its own story and its own characteristics in order to expand the understanding of Dune. Although much work about this science fiction novel exists today, the implications of the Bene Gesserit have not been adequately discussed. There are critics who condemn Herbert’s depiction of women in his universe based on the comparison of power between the novel’s protagonist hero, Paul Atreides and his Bene Gesserit counterparts. Another important tendency in Dune criticism is the inaccurate view that limits the understanding of the Bene Gesserit as a religious organization, although Dune itself provides readers with evidence to the contrary.
