In 1784, a ship called "United States" arrived in Pondicherry. Its captain was Elias Hasket Derby of Salem. In the decades that followed Indian goods became available in Salem, Boston and Providence. A handful of Indian servant boys, perhaps the first Asian Indian residents, could be found in these towns, brought home by the sea captains.[1] 1801 First writings on Hinduism In 1801, New England writer Hannah Adams published A View of Religions, with a chapter discussing Hinduism. Joseph Priestly, founder of English Utilitarianism and isolater of oxygen, emigrated to America and published A Comparison of the Institutions of Moses with those of the Hindoos and other Ancient Nations in 1804. 1810-20 Unitarian interest in Hindu reform movements The American Unitarians became interested in Indian thought through the work of Hindu reformer Rammohun Roy (1772-1833) in India. Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj which tried to reform Hinduism by affirming monotheism and rejecting idolotry. The Brahmo Samaj with its universalist ideas became closely allied to the Unitarians in England and America. 1820-40 Emerson's discovery of India Ralph Waldo Emerson discovered Indian thought as an undergraduate at Harvard, in part through the Unitarian connection with Rammohun Roy. He wrote his poem "Indian Superstition" for the Harvard College Exhibition of April 24, 1821. In the 1830's, Emerson had copies of the Rig-Veda, the Upanishads, the Laws of Manu, the Bhagavata Purana, and his favorite Indian text the Bhagavad-Gita.

Department of Archaeology, University of Kerala, Kariavattom Campus, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – 695581, India (Email: [email protected]) Received: 18 August 2019; Revised: 28 September 2019; Accepted: 25 October 2019 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 7 (2019): 233-251 Abstract: Icons of Shasta, Ayyappa and Buddha are found from ancient Tamilakam (Kerala and Tamil Nadu) in large numbers. Religious biases, beliefs, and ignorance of iconography have often resulted in the paradoxical identification and divergent sectarian association of these divinities and their icons. This paper attempts a reappraisal of images of Shasta, Buddha and Ayyappa with a view to dissect and present their individualistic iconographic temperaments. Keywords: Shasta, Ayyappa, Buddha, Icons, Mural Paintings, Sabarimala Temple, Kerala Introduction Shasta etymologically means ‘a ruler or guardian of a country or land.’ Shasta, as a deity, is not found referred to in any early Sanskrit texts (Rao 1914: 485). He was a minor deity in Tamilakam and finds mention in Devaram hymns dating to 6th-7th CE (Sarkar 1978: 109). Seated idols of Shasta, without consorts and elephant dating to as early as the 8th -9th century CE, are found from the premises of a few temples in Kerala (Sarkar: 108-111). Later, texts like Sri Bhagavatam, Amsumadhbhedagama, and Suprabhedagama cites Shasta as Hariharaputra, a progeny of Shiva and Vishnu. Buddha idols contemporaneous to Shasta idols found from Kerala are seated in Padmasana and Dhyana mudra. Shasta and Buddha idols have no iconographic or stylistic similarity with each other though Amarakosha assigns the name Shasta to Buddha as a synonym (Kumar 2019a: 51-58).

    Shasta Payne REL 207 Portfolio Essay # 1 Hinduism is a large religion based out of India. It is seen as the ultimate truth, in that there is no founder. It is said to be eternal and timeless, and what people of this faith seek is an enlightenment of knowing this ultimate truth. It is associated with both transcendence and immanence Ȃ it is a divine reality that is present everywhere throughout the universe. The ultimate divine reality is called Brahman, which comes in Nirguna and Saguna forms. It can be beyond forms and transcendent, or it can also appear in the form of gods and goddesses. Though there are many gods and goddesses, they are all directly linked to Brahman and are said to be one with the divine. They are manifestations of various qualities of the divine reality. It is vastly different from many Western culture ideals or Judeo-Christian- Islam teachings and views. Hinduism has its own trinity, called the Trimurti. It consists of the Brahma, or creator, Vishnu, the preserver and human form, and Shiva, the destroyer of ignorance. They are 3, however, they are also all part of the one divine, ultimate reality. These parts of the divine also have female consorts. Saraswati is Brahmaǯs counterpart, who is the representation of learning and the arts. Lakshmi is the consort of Vishnu, and she is the ideal of wealth and beauty. Parvati is the female counterpart for Shiva, and she is seen as the ideal wife. All of the three together are considered the Divine Mother. Time is not seen as having a beginning or an end within Hinduism.

This great work was written by Sri Veda Vyasa, in circumstances in which he himself was not satisfied after his writing the great Mahabharata.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: CLAIMING INDIA: FRENCH SCHOLARS AND THE PREOCCUPATION WITH INDIA DURING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Jyoti Mohan, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Jeffrey Herf, Department of History My dissertation examines the image of India which was created by the French academics of the nineteenth century. This image of India was distinct from the British image of India partly due to the different intellectual and political traditions in France, as well as Anglo-French national rivalry and the position of France in India as a subordinate or ‗subaltern‘ colonizer. For instance, the French image of India was marked by its reliance on the spiritual and religious aspects of India, and its antiquity and ‗Aryan‘ heritage, while the British described India primarily as a land of Oriental despotism and oppressed masses alleviated only by British colonial rule. I have examined the specifically French creation of India by French writers from the early modern to the early twentieth century to demonstrate the history of French interest in India. I have also looked at the interest of scholars in different nineteenth century disciplines like philology, anthropology, history, and religion in creating a specifically ‗French‘ image of India in terms of race, caste and Hinduism.
