In Inkberrow, Cookhill, Kington and Dormston In Inkberrow, Cookhill, Kington and Dormston Springtime welcome March 2021 2 MARY SMITH OF KINGTON The family of Mary Smith from Kington would like to thank everyone for their kind messages of condolence. Mary died peacefully at home in her sleep on 6th January at the age of 89 years. She had lived in Kington since 1959 and had been a very active member of the village, including being a long term deliverer of What’s On. It was lovely to see the respect shown to Mum by the villagers on the day of her funeral. Thank you, from her son, Andrew Smith. The meeting will also review the Accounts and the Trustees’ Annual Report for the year ended 28 Feb 2021. If you wish to take part, please e-mail [email protected] so that a Zoom meeting invitation can be sent to you. This is just to let you know we have every intention that this year’s Autumn Show will take place on 4th September in Inkberrow Village Hall. After all the ‘downs’ of last year, let us make it the best ever! So, please have a good summer of growing, and enjoy spending time on your craft skills. Keep safe! Tony Perryman SUNFLOWER ASCENT Lockdown over the past year has afforded folk more time in the garden. One bloom that has gained a higher profile has been the sunflower. These lofty bright blooms during 2020 had been shooting up behind neighbours’ hedges, on roadside verges and gracing people’s flower beds. More recently, our bird neighbours are benefiting from the seeds produced. Over 40 people and households took part in growing sunflowers locally and further afield. Many of us were inspired by the example of the late Captain Sir Tom Moore in his efforts to acknowledge our thanks to NHS and key workers. The growing of sunflowers provided a reminder, an ongoing hands-on visual aid or metaphor to acknowledge our gratitude as well. Some folk may be keen to continue the growing of sunflowers; others may like to choose an alternative flowering plant, such as lilies, sweet peas, etc. to help keep the message alive and generate hope. Why not pop into a garden centre or suitable shop and choose some seeds to plant in March or April? Then anticipate a lofty, colourful floral harvest later in the year. To mark this occasion the Parish Council has granted permission for daffodils to be planted under the trees along Chestnut Lane. This area is the “SHOP FRONT” of the village and we plan to enhance its beauty each spring. If you have not already donated towards this project and you would like to contribute perhaps in memory of a loved one please can you pop your donation through my letter box. Cheques if possible made payable to the Tuesday Afternoon Tea Club no later than Saturday 8th May 2021. Please include your name and address to receive a receipt for your donation. The hard work of planting will be done by the Young Farmers on Saturday 25th September. Weather permitting we plan a welcome “get together” for contributors and helpers on the afternoon of the planting at Chestnut Lane for tea, cakes and a chat from 2 p.m. onwards. With your kind donation, in the spring of years to come we may be able to quote Wordsworth: “Ten thousand daffodils saw I at a glance” Looking forward to hearing from you.
