Parish Registers on Microfilm at the Hive Worcestershire Archive And Parish Registers on Microfilm at The Hive Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service 2012 Introduction to the Parish Register Handlist The Hive holds parish registers for Worcestershire dating from the mid 16th century onwards. The church registers contain records of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials. These records are a major focus of study for family, local and social history, as they contain a wealth of information. As such, much of the information has been copied for ease of access and use. This handlist is a guide to what is currently available in our Self-service area. What Information does the Handlist provide? The name of the village. The Civil and Ancient parishes are often the same but there may have been changes over time. The name of the church from which the registers originated. This can be useful if there is more than one in a particular parish. For example, in Worcester City there are several parish churches. The name of the civil parish which now encompasses the ancient parish. Information on what register copies are available on microfilm. Dates of any transcriptions either in volumes or available on CD. Please see our handlist to parish register transcriptions and our list of CD holdings for further details The Notes column provides further information such as where parishes have been formed out of others. The registers we hold largely relate to Worcestershire, but as the diocese of Worcester has changed over the centuries we may hold registers from other counties too. Some parishes will return the result 'no information'. This usually means that we do not hold the registers for that parish. Things to bear in mind if you are having difficulty finding a particular parish Parish boundaries are always changing. It may be that the parish you are looking for is now described differently or linked with another, for example, Orleton is now described as Stanford and Orleton. It may be that a parish which was on the cusp of the county at one point has now been reallocated to another county and therefore the records are not held at The Hive. Please note that although this handlist mainly concerns parishes in Worcestershire we have included information on some other neighbouring, parishes. How to use this handlist Check the handlist to make sure that the parish registers you require are held by us on microfilm Once you have identified which microfilm you need, the microfilm can be selected from the Self-Service Area. These are sorted in alphabetical order of the name of the town or village. For Worcester City, the films will be indexed under Worcester and then alphabetically by name of parish. Other sources Bishops’ Transcripts These are available on microfilm in our Self-Service Area. Please see our handlist to Bishop's Transcripts for further information About Bishops' Transcripts Every year, until the early twentieth century, the vicar of a parish had to make a copy of his parish registers to send to the bishop. Therefore, the Bishops’ transcripts should be a direct copy of the registers of baptisms, marriages and burials. Although there can be errors these transcripts can be very useful if the parish registers have not survived, are extremely badly damaged or are not held at The Hive Glossary Chapel of ease - A secondary building used for worship in a parish, particularly when the parish was large and it was difficult for parishioners to get to the main church. Most of these were made into parish churches in their own right in the 19th Century. Chapelry - A small chapel associated with a particular parish. Civil Parish – Units to serve only civil roles. Diocese - This is the area under the jurisdiction of a bishop. Please note that the boundaries of the Diocese of Worcester are not necessarily the same as the administrative boundary of Worcester. Also it has changed many times in history with the result that records of parishes within the Diocese once may be held at other record offices and vice versa. Ecclesiastical Parish – Units to serve only ecclesiastical roles. Home Choice Plus has been designed to improve access to affordable housing. The advantage is that you only register once and the scheme allows you to view and bid on available properties for which you are eligible across all of the districts. Home Choice Plus has been developed by a number of Local Authorities and Housing Associations working in partnership. Home Choice Plus is a way of allocating housing and advertising other housing options across the participating Local Authority areas. (Home Choice Plus will also be used for advertising other housing options such as private rents and intermediate rents). This booklet explains how to look for housing across all of the Districts involved in this scheme. Please see website for further information. Who is eligible to join the Home Choice Plus register? • Some people travelling to the United Kingdom are not entitled to Housing Association accommodation on the basis of their immigration status. • You may be excluded if you have a history of serious rent arrears or anti social behaviour.
