Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 2 Indian entertainment and media outlook 2010 Message To our clients and friends both in and beyond the entertainment and media industry : Welcome to the 2010 edition of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Indian Entertainment and Media (E&M) Outlook, covering the forecast period of 2010–2014. Our forecasts and analysis for this edition focus on eight major E&M industry segments and one emerging segment. Each segment details out the key trends observed and challenges faced apart from providing the prospects for the segment. In the industry overview section, we have highlighted the key theme observed during 2009 and what we perceive as future trends in the coming years. We have a chapter on the tax and regulatory impact on the various E&M segments and for the very first time we have included a chapter on how technology can be leveraged in the E&M industry. In 2009, the economy severely impacted the world, translating into steep declines in advertisement as well as consumer spending. India though impacted, did manage to show growth with increased consumer spending as well as innovative action on the part of the industry. Against this backdrop, across the world, except certain markets, speed of digital spending increased due to changing consumer behavior as well as technology available to deliver the same. In India, while the spend on digital media is likely to grow, it is unlikely that it will dominate in the forecast period. This is largely due to the relative unavailability as well as unaffordability of the broadband and mobile infrastructure. -

The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

Interactive Television for Young Children: Developing Design Principles Ana Vitoria Joly Hulshof A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2010 University of Brighton Abstract The research reported in this thesis investigates preschoolers‟ interactions with interactive television applications. The study involved the development of an electronic programme guide prototype and the empirical evaluation thereof. There were three main aims. The first aim was to analyse children‟s interactions and illustrate them in a framework to further understanding of the way preschoolers interact with the television. The second aim was to contribute design principles for preschool interactive television and the third aim was to refine methods and add to the knowledge of design and evaluation techniques involving young children. This research, which involved design and evaluation phases, was carried out with children in Brazil and in the United Kingdom aged between three and four. Children participated actively as informants and were asked for input at various stages of the project. Their participation during design activities and evaluation sessions was crucial to the constitution of the framework, the development of design principles and the refinement of methods for working with preschoolers. The results revealed that young children‟s interactions with interactive television are influenced by: the children‟s age, motor skills, country context, media and device use and knowledge. These factors along with the input device used for interaction and characteristics of the interactive television application determine the number of accomplishable tasks, the time taken to accomplish the tasks, the complexity of the tasks that can be accomplished, the hints and assistance as well as interactions needed to accomplish the tasks. -

But these days, one of his favorite superheroes is a cool cartoon version of Hanuman, the monkey-headed Hindu god. For thousands of years, Hindus have prayed to Hanuman in times of trouble, beseeching him to perform miraculous feats in their lives. Last week, the god was revealed to Tejas in a movie theater. In "The Return of Hanuman," the adored deity is reborn as a boy who goes to school in khaki shorts, uses a computer, combats pollution and, most important, smashes the bad guys to pulp. "I loved the film because Hanuman is a boy like me and saves planet Earth," said Tejas, a tall, wide-eyed second-grader. "It was awesome to see the gods laughing, singing and flying planes. The fights were really good, and in the end Hanuman sets everything right." A number of haloed Hindu gods and goddesses have debuted in the frenetic world of animation over the past five years. Their appearance marks a shift from a decades-long period in which Indian children grew up almost exclusively on American TV and movie characters, including Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, and Spider-Man. To many parents, though, the "mytho-cartoons" are more than a novelty; they are a way to introduce the ancient tales to a generation that seems to be losing touch with its 5,000-year heritage. -

Animation is new field but it is practiced in other forms in India from ancient time . If we look at the present scenario the animation has its influence on almost every sector i.e. education, medical, engineering, aerospace, entertainment etc. there are more than 1000 animation studios (2d & 3d) are in India which are continuously working on animation. Which is increasing this industry every day. However, This industry is facing some challenges. Animation studios here are obviously great to give good quality animated films however is not thinking of unique film. Hollywood is outsourcing many projects from India which is continuously increasing the quality and confidence of Indian artists. Introduction: The demand for animation industry of global animation market is growing rapidly due to the increasing number of multinational studios, cable channel companies; TV broadcast companies, availability of low cost internet access, and penetration of mobile devices along with the growing popularity of streaming video. The fast changing technology has made animation, VFX & games available to the masses, and this industry has become one of the fastest growing sector in the global media and entertainment market. More and more global animation, VFX and games production taking place in a globally distributed mode. Factors like favorable government rules, multi-industrial applications, improvements in animation technologies and icreased aired time from cable operators are propelling the market growth.
