Welcome to the Catholic Churches of S+38> J/<97/ And S+38> J+7/= FdžǃǓǖǂǓǚ 14, 2021 • 6Ǖlj SǖǏDžǂǚ NJǏ OǓDžNJǏǂǓǚ TNJǎdž Notes (♫) from Steve’s Journal If you wish, you can make me clean In today’s gospel passage, a man with leprosy says Jesus. Was it a bold thing for him even to approach Jesus, let alone make this bold statement? It sounds like he’s giving Jesus permission to heal him. The man appears to recognize who Jesus is and what is his mission: to raise up and heal, to reconcile sinners to God, to make us whole, holy, truly human. Without presumption or expectation the man simply says: “if you want to, you can heal me.” What I take from this is that I have to recognize who I am in the Lord’s presence, and it challenges me to say to Jesus, without fear or presumption, “If you will it, if you want to, you can forgive me, heal me, make me whole — love me.” Try saying this to God in simple prayer — “if you wish, you can love me — despite my selfishness, sinfulness, hatred, ugly thoughts or behaviors; with all of my human weakness and neediness: love me, if you will to.” Is it hard to say — to be so “bold” or vulnerable, humble? Why should it be so difficult? The answer we can expect to receive from Jesus — immediately — is the same as Jesus gave to the man with leprosy: “Of course I will it! I do wish to heal you, to make you whole — to love you. I will for you to be fully human just as I am, and to share in my divine love and life.” How does it feel to hear this spoken by the Lord? Can I believe it, accept it?
