(English Graduate Organization) Tempest Rocks Atlantic Beach Crowd A nearly full moon and a powerful wind set the backdrop for the last night of this year‘s production of Shakespeare‘s The Tempest, a play that sprang to life under the waving trees and the powerful direction of Dr. Pam Montelone. Setting the play off the coast of Florida in the age of exploration, Monteleone brought new energy to this Shakespearean classic through her well chosen cast and crew, composed of UNF and FSCJ students, alumni, and a beautiful group of spirits, many of whom are still in elementary or middle school. A simple set—the wrecked ship with flowing torn sails, and a six-tiered platform—created the perfect stage. -

1 FLESHING OEDIPA OUT How to Read “The Crying of Lot 49” (and How Not To) The Crying of Lot 49 is Thomas Pynchon’s shortest book, and some of its flaws probably result from its compactness. The jokey names, for instance, a feature of all of his books, can annoy some readers more here; I think it is really the sketchiness of the structure that grates—though less obtrusively to an average reader’s consciousness, perhaps, so that the names are what seem to cause the annoyance. The book’s shortness is probably what, with Pynchonian irony, attracts a certain type of reader who is less than prepared to contend with anything but the surface. The problem that Pynchon did not quite solve (though he is in my opinion too hard on himself in his retrospective comment1) is that while the book needed to be concise and is in fact the right length, the patented Pynchonian unraveling of the plot was harder to achieve in so short a space. The reader can become, like the protagonist, Oedipa Maas, “saturated” (177—all references to the first edition), overwhelmed by detail. Among other lapses, the concision leads to several clunky topic sentences (“Things then did not delay in turning curious” [44]). The introduction of an (imaginary?) postal service that has maintained itself for centuries in a shadowy parallel existence outside official history, is especially clumsy, and evokes sentences rankly amateurish, for example: “So began, for Oedipa, the languid, sinister blooming of The Tristero” (54; I will use this spelling throughout, not Trystero). -

INTERLITT ERA RIA 2019, 24/2: 495–508 495 Bleeding Edge of Postmodernism Bleeding Edge of Postmoder nism: Metamodern Writing in the Novel by Thomas Pynchon SIMON RADCHENKO Abstract. Many different models of co ntemporary novel’s description arose from the search for methods and approaches of post-postmodern texts analysis. One of them is the concept of metamodernism, proposed by Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker and based on the culture and philosophy changes at the turn of this century. This article argues that the ideas of metamodernism and its main trends can be successfully used for the study of contemporary literature. The basic trends of metamodernism were determined and observed through the prism of literature studies. They were implemented in the analysis of Thomas Pynchon’s latest novel, Bleeding Edge (2013). Despite Pynchon being usually considered as postmodern writer, the use of metamodern categories for describing his narrative strategies confirms the idea of the novel’s post-postmodern orientation. The article makes an endeavor to use metamodern categories as a tool for post-postmodern text studies, in order to analyze and interpret Bleeding Edge through those categories. Although discussions of a paradigm shift have been around long enough, when talking about contemporary literary phenomena we are still using the categories of feeling rather than specific instruments. Perception of contemporary lit era- ture as post-postmodern seems dated today. However, Joseph Tabbi has questioned the novelty of post-postmodernism as something new, different from postmodernism and proposes to consider the abolition of irony and post- modernism (Tabbi 2017). -

The main body of this work can be seen as an admiration and reverence for the values and ideals associated with postmodern philosophy as well as postmodern literature. , I have argued that postmodern has mainly influenced philosophy and literature and they are recognized and praised for their multiplicity. Postmodernism might seem exclusive in its work, its emphasis on multiplicity and the decentered subject makes very uncomfortable reading for traditional theorists or philosophers. It rejects western values and beliefs as only small part of the human experience and it rejects such ideas, beliefs, culture and norms of the western. Integrity is fragmented apart into unharmonious narratives which lead to a shattering of identity and an overall breakdown of any idea of the self. Relativism and Self- reflexivity have replaced self-confidence due to the postmodern belief that all representation distorts reality. I have also referred that in a sense; postmodernism is a part of modernism we find the instantaneous coexistence of these two methods of expression and thinking, especially in visual arts and literature. Hence it is legitimate to speak of the so-called information society; but a scientific understanding of the Information Age has not had time to develop. Following this evolution we face the need of a new transdisciplinary understanding of information, encompassing many academic disciplines and new fields of interest. Therefore a Science of Information is required. The goal of this paper is to discuss the aims, the scope, and the tools of a Science of Information. Furthermore we describe the new Science of Information Institute (SOII), which will be established as an international and transdisciplinary organization that takes into consideration a larger perspective of information. The paper seeks to show how during the Sino C Japanese war, a genuine cross-continental mentorship grew between the prolific Ger- man mathematician Hermann Weyl (1885{1955) and the gifted mathemati- cian Hua Loo-keng. Their correspondence offers a profound understanding of a solidarity-building effort that can exist in the scientific community. -
