October 18, 2013 Music Business in Detroit: Estimating the Size of the Music Industry in the Motor City Prepared by: Anderson Economic Group, LLC Colby Spencer Cesaro, Senior Analyst Alex Rosaen, Senior Consultant Lauren Branneman, Senior Analyst Forward by: Patrick L. Anderson, Principal & CEO Anderson Economic Group, LLC 1555 Watertower Place, Suite 100 East Lansing, Michigan 48823 Tel: (517) 333-6984 Fax: (517) 333-7058 www.AndersonEconomicGroup.com © Anderson Economic Group, LLC, 2013 Permission to reproduce in entirety granted with proper citation. Foreword I'm pleased to share with readers of Crain's Detroit Business, as well as with others in the Detroit region, this first-of-its-kind study of the business of music in southeast Michigan. Everyone that grew up in this area knows of the "Motown sound," as well as the heritage of jazz, blues, and rock that has steeped into our culture. Many of us are also aware of the more recent innovations of techno and hip-hop, much of which has roots in Detroit. However, until now there has been no systematic analysis of the business of music in our area. Our Anderson Economic Group consultants have combed census and other business records; examined the geographic pattern of nightclubs and perfor- mance venues; scanned demographic patterns for concentrations of heavy enter- tainment consumers; and even conducted primary research into the days/nights of live music available to metro Detroiters at over two hundred specific bars, taverns, and clubs. What we have assembled is a thorough analysis of an indus- try that has always been important to our culture, but can now also be known for its contributions to our employment and earnings.

  • Escovedo Family Bios
Escovedo Family Bios Pete Escovedo (Pops) has had a fruitful career as a percussionist with three years in Santana, founder of Azteca, a cooperative 14-piece Latin big band, and the father of pop star Sheila E. The master percussionist’s music seamlessly flows between Latin jazz, salsa, funk and R&B styles. This incredible ensemble features Juan and Peter Michael Escovedo along with a mix of musicians from both Los Angeles and the Bay Area. After several decades, Pete Escovedo has become an internationally recognized percussionist, nominated for two Grammy Awards and hailed as a percussion master. He is recognized by some of the greatest artists of our time and has had the opportunity to collaborate and share the stage with musical stars like Prince, Herbie Hancock, The Temptations and Stevie Wonder. Sheila E. was born into a rich heritage of Latin music in Oakland, California. She picked up drumsticks and started making music at the precocious age of three while watching her father, legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo, rehearse for his gigs with Tito Puente and Carlos Santana. She and her two younger brothers and sister grew up in a close-knit artistic family where it wasn’t uncommon for the top musicians of the day to jam in their small apartment until the early morning hours. And if they often struggled to make ends meet, they were rich in love and family unity. She began her career in the mid-1970s as a percussionist and singer for The George Duke Band. After leaving the group in 1983, Sheila began a successful solo career, starting with her critically acclaimed debut album, which included the career-defining song, “The Glamorous Life”.

  • The GREATEST of the GREAT LAKES Michigan Is the Birthplace of Some of the Most Gifted Souls to Bless the World with Their Talents
Presents: The GREATEST of the GREAT LAKES Michigan is the birthplace of some of the most gifted souls to bless the world with their talents. It is time to bring this attention to the World. Bigger Than Life Entertainment, Inc. (BTL) will produce and host one of the biggest and most unique events to showcase the magnificent city of Detroit. This event will transform how the world sees the state of Michigan. We’re looked at as the city that is lost. Everyone has forgotten Motown, and what it did for Detroit. When they moved away to Los Angeles, we became Hockey Town by winning three Stanley Cups and now the Tigers are in the Playoffs and the Lions are winning. We are back and this Concert will put the light right where it Mission should be, Detroit is still alive. This event will Benefit Michigan Board of Statement Education and the local charity of Coats 4 Kids, The City of Detroit Serving underprivileged youth in the State. The GREATEST of the GREAT LAKES by Bigger Than Life Entertainment We here at BTL would like to work towards bettering the lives of the Michigan youth by the success of this event. “Hoping to boost the confidence of the youth of Detroit, and its surrounding cities” by providing them with a brighter future, generated by people who care and have over come the same obstacles they endure. Bigger Than Life was founded by one that made it out of the tough streets of Detroit. We will look to bring programs to the schools, to help curve our youth to make better choices.
