Of 2,332 young Redheads(Nyroca americana (Eyton)), banded in northern Utah in 1929, 1930 and 1931 there were 357 returns, all shot by sportsmen. The northward dispersionin fall is well illus- trated by September and October returns from Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Idaho. Although migration may begin early, many young remain in the breeding grounds until October. The returns show the principal wintering grounds for the Utah birds to be the Salton Sea region of southernCalifornia and the lower coast of Texas from Corpus Christi to Mexico. Eighty-sevenpercent of the birds taken were less than one year old; 10.6 percent were second-yearbirds, and two percent were third year or older. This ratio prompts the author to assumelogically that the first year is the critical one in the life of the bird insofar as shooting is concerned. -

Received: June 20, 2020 / Accepted: August 27, 2020/ Published online: September 28, 2020 Abstract Birds of prey are important for maintaining ecosystems, since they can regulate the populations of vertebrates and invertebrates. However, anthropic activities, like habitat fragmentation, have been decreasing the number of birds of prey, affecting the habitat ecological relations and, decreasing biodiversity. Our objective was to evaluate species of birds of prey (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) in a protected area of the Atlantic forest in northeastern Brazil. The area was sampled for 17 months using fixed points and walking along a pre-existing trail. Birds of prey were classified by their Punctual Abundance Index, threat status and forest dependence. Sixteen birds of prey were recorded, being the most common Rupornis magnirostris and Caracara plancus. Most species were considered rare in the area and not dependent of forest vegetation. -

Brief descriptions are provided as well as active months and status listings. Photos are primarily courtesy of Greg Smith. Species are arranged by family according to the Sibley Guide to Birds (2000). Gaviidae Red-throated Loon Gavia stellata Occurrence: Common Active Months: November-April Federal Status: None State/Audubon Status: None Description: A small loon seldom seen far from salt water. In the non-breeding season they have a grey face and red throat. They have a long slender dark bill and white speckling on their dark back. Information: These birds are winter residents to the Central Coast. Wintering Red- throated Loons can gather in large numbers in Morro Bay if food is abundant. They are common on salt water of all depths but frequently forage in shallow bays and estuaries rather than far out at sea. Because their legs are located so far back, loons have difficulty walking on land and are rarely found far from water. Most loons must paddle furiously across the surface of the water before becoming airborne, but these small loons can practically spring directly into the air from land, a useful ability on its artic tundra breeding grounds. Key anatomical issues in veterinary forensics Aves- Classification Birds belong to the scientific class Aves. These are bipedal animals with feathers, wings, beaks, and scales on their legs and feet. They are endothermic (warm-blooded), breathe air, and lay eggs.Chicken fall in the order Galliformes. These are heavy-bodied ground-feeding birds that include chicken, turkey, grouse, New and Old World quail, ptarmigan, partridge, pheasant, and the Cracidae.They are arboreal or terrestrial animals; many prefer not to fly, but instead walk and run for locomotion. Birds of prey belong to the order Falconiformes. These birds are characterized by strong bills that are hooked at the tip and sharp on the edges. Their feet have sharp, curved talons and an opposable hind toe. They have a keen vision. They are generally strong flyers. They eat other animals hence called birds of prey or raptors. They hunt during the day and thus called diurnal birds of prey.Owls (Order Strigiformes) are also birds of prey, but they are nocturnal (hunt at night). Some important families: 1. ABSTRACT: Despite the key role that knowledge on breeding biology of Accipitriformes plays in their management and conservation, survey of the state-of-the-art and of information gaps spanning the entire Neotropics has not been done since 1995. We provide an updated classification of current knowledge about breeding biology of Neotropical Accipitridae and define the taxa that should be prioritized by future studies. We analyzed 440 publications produced since 1995 that reported breeding of 56 species. There is a persistent scarcity, or complete absence, of information about the nests of eight species, and about breeding behavior of another ten. Among these species, the largest gap of breeding data refers to the former “Leucopternis” hawks. Although 66% of the 56 evaluated species had some improvement on knowledge about their breeding traits, research still focus disproportionately on a few regions and species, and the scarcity of breeding data on many South American Accipitridae persists. We noted that analysis of records from both a citizen science digital database and museum egg collections significantly increased breeding information on some species, relative to recent literature. We created four groups of priority species for breeding biology studies, based on knowledge gaps and threat categories at global level. -

Visiting a lek of the stunning Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock is definitely a must for any birder. And there´s no better place to do it than Suriname! (Dani Lopez-Velasco) SURINAME 23 FEBRUARY – 9/14 MARCH 2015 LEADER: DANI LOPEZ VELASCO and SEAN DILROSUN On our third tour to Suriname we amassed a great list of Guianan specialities, next to a splendid selection of more widespread, but rarely seen species. Our intrepid group recorded 404 species of birds, 16 mammals and some lovely ‘herps’ in this little country with its surface of about eight times Wales and its population of just over half a million people. We visited five different areas comprising three distinct ecosystems. It started with a short visit to the white sand grasslands and scrub of central Suriname where Black-faced Hawk, Bronzy Jacamar, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Saffron-crested Tyrant–Manakin, Black Manakin and Glossy- backed Becard grabbed our attention. It continued with the famous Raleigh Falls and the Voltzberg, where many Guianan Cocks-of-the-Rock put on an unforgettable show on their lek, while other major avian highlights included brilliant Pompadour Cotingas, massive Black-throated and the very localized Band-tailed 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Suriname www.birdquest-tours.com Antshrikes and delightful Red-billed Pied Tanagers. The misty forests of the Brownsberg were lighted up by incredibly tame Grey-winged Trumpeters and Black Curassows, rare Racket-tailed and stunning Tufted Coquettes, gaudy Blue-backed Tanagers and delicate White-fronted Manakins, colorful Rose-breasted Chats and much wanted Red-and black Grosbeaks. The coastal area held goodies like Scarlet Ibis, Rufous Crab Hawk, localized Arrowhead Piculets and Blood-coloured Woodpeckers and striking Crimson-hooded Manakins.
