Del. Maggie McIntosh – Chair, Chesapeake Bay Commission

Maggie McIntosh first entered the House of Delegates in 1992 when she was appointed to fill a vacant position in the 42nd District, which contained neighborhoods from City and Baltimore County. Maggie first served on the Appropriations Committee, where she chaired the Personnel Subcommittee and was a member of the Education and Economic Development Subcommittees. Delegate McIntosh later assumed the position of Vice Chairman of the Commerce and Government Matters Committee before being named House Majority Leader by Speaker Casper R. Taylor in 2001. She is the first woman in history to have held the post.

Following the 2002 legislative redistricting, Delegate McIntosh won a hard-fought campaign in the redrawn 43rd District, contained entirely within northern Baltimore City. She has since been re-elected in the 43rd District in 2006 and 2010. In January 2003 Delegate McIntosh was selected to chair the House Environmental Matters Committee, the leadership post she holds to this day. She also continues to serve on the Legislative Policy Committee.

Delegate McIntosh has been recognized by many different groups for her legislative work and advocacy. She has been recognized by The Daily Record as one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women in 1998, 2000, and 2009 and been enshrined in their prestigious Circle of Excellence. The Women’s Law Center has awarded her their Dorothy Beatty Memorial Service Award for her work on behalf of expanding legal rights for all women and their families. Delegate McIntosh has been recognized by the Maryland Association of Counties; the Maryland Municipal League, who awarded her their 2008 Distinguished Legislator Award; the Department of Housing and Community Development, who named her 2006 Homeownership Advocate of the Year; the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, who named her Legislator of the Year in 2004 and 2007, as well as selecting her as a 2009 Legislative Champion (along with Speaker Michael Busch); Progressive Maryland, who awarded her Legislator of the Year in 2006; and the Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning, who gave her their 2008 Legislative Advocacy Award. In 2009 she was given the Chester River Keeper Award from the Chester River Association and the Chesapeake Bay Cornerstone Award by Outward Bound Baltimore. In 2013, she was honored with the Chair’s Award by the Mautner Project, the premiere national lesbian health organization.

Delegate McIntosh has served on several task forces and advisory councils, including: the Fine Arts Education Advisory Panel for the State Department of Education; the Governor’s Commission on Welfare Policy; the Governor’s Task Force to Reform the State Personnel Management System; the Task Force to Study the Modernization of Credit Union Law; the Study Commission on Lobbyist Ethics; the Environmental Restoration and Development Task Force that dealt with Brownfields reform; the Special Committee on Higher Education Affordability and Accessibility; and the Task Force on Sustainable Growth and Wastewater Management. Delegate McIntosh has been appointed by the Governor and Speaker of the House of Delegates to serve on the boards of the Maryland Historical Trust and the Chesapeake Bay Commission. In 2012, Maggie was selected as Chair of the Chesapeake Bay Commission after previously leading the Maryland delegation.

Delegate McIntosh is a former teacher in the Baltimore City Public Schools, as well as an adjunct professor at Catonsville Community College and the University of Baltimore. She is an active member of the Maryland Democratic Party, having previously served for eight years as a member of the Democratic Central Committee from Baltimore City and attended the 2008 and 2012 Democratic National Conventions. Prior to her election she served as State Director and Campaign Manager for U.S. Senator . While not in session, she works as an Associate for Federal Relations at Johns Hopkins University.

Maggie is a resident of the Tuscany-Canterbury neighborhood in North Baltimore where she lives with her wife, Diane, and golden retriever, Myrtle. Maggie loves to travel, kayak, and bike with family and friends.
