Morphology

Cephalothorax hexagonal (xanthoid-shaped), wider than long. Eyes and orbits short. Carapace margins diverging. Posterior margin usually narrow. Thoracic sternum relatively narrow, not very enlarged behind sternite 4. Abdomen Male sexual opening coxal. Penial groove never closed. First gonopod typically panopeid. Proximal abdominal segments usually completely covering space between coxae of last pairof legs, sometimes small portion of sternite 8 uncovered. Type genus: H. Milne Edwards, 1834.

Habitat lntertidally under rocks in mud or gravel.

Morphology carapace: surface relatively smooth with a few small granules on flat elevations. Pereopods: chelipeds stout with smooth surfaces; carpus may be slightly rugose. P2-5 stout with slight crest on dorsal margin of carpus. Some scattered setae and areas of short dense pubescence.

Size Carapace: male 23 X 34 mm; female 15 X 22 mm

Coloration Variable. Carapace and chelipeds a mixture of various shades of brown, violet, purple. grey and white; fingers black with white teeth and sometimes with pink tips. Walking legs may appear to be somewhat banded with dark and light colouring. Ventrally light coloured. Peduncle of antennules banded light and dark. Eyestalk brown and white; cornea black.

Synonyms Xantho bellus Stimpson, 1860 Xantho hemphilliana Lockington, 1877 (incorrect spelling) Xanthodes hemphillii Lockington, 1877

Remarks Ng et al. (2008) and WoRMS list Lophopanopeus bellus and L. diegensis as separate species. However, many NEP authors including Wickstein (2012a) treat the two as subspecies - Lophopanopeus bellus bellus and L. bellus diegensis.
