  • In Memoriam 115
IN MEMORIAM 115 • IN MEMORIAM CLAUDE WILSON 1860-1937 THE death of Claude Wilson within a few weeks of attaining his seventy-seventh birthday came as a terrible shock to his many friends. Few of us even knew that he was ill, but in the manner of his passing none can regret that there was no lingering illness. We can but quote his own words in Lord Conway's obituary: 'the best we can wish for those that we love is that they may be spared prolonged and hopeless ill health.' His brain remained clear up to the last twenty-four hours and he suffered no pain. The end occurred on October 31. With Claude Wilson's death an epoch of mountaineering comes to an end. He was of those who made guideless and Alpine history from Montenvers in the early 'nineties, of whom but Collie, Kesteven, Bradby, ~olly and Charles Pasteur still survive. That school, in which Mummery and Morse were perhaps the most prominent examples, was not composed of specialists. Its members had learnt their craft under the best Valais and Oberland guides; they were equally-proficient on rocks or on snow. It mattered little who was acting as leader in the ascent or last man in the descent. They were prepared to turn back if conditions or weather proved unfavourable. They took chances as all mountaineers are forced to do at times but no fatal accidents, no unfortunate incidents, marred that great page of Alpine history, a page not confined to Mont Blanc alone but distributed throughout the Western Alps.

University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] This report summarizes a glacial archaeology project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) which took place between 2011 and 2014. This interdis- ciplinary project integrated methods from archaeology, history, and geography and resulted in the collection of more than one hundred objects of archaeological interest. Until now, 37 of those objects have been dated using radiocarbon analysis and range from the Bronze Age to modern times. The final results are presented and discussed and perspectives are offered in regard to future regional scale, interdisciplinary, gla- cial archaeological projects. Introduction The subject of glacial archaeology is a consequence of climate change; high-altitude and -latitude environments, which have been covered in ice and snow for hundreds to thousands of years, have been recently subject to increased melting due to aug- mented global temperatures, leading to the discovery of archaeological artefacts and remains in these areas (Dixon et al. 2014). The glacial-archaeological phenomenon was brought to light after the discovery of Ötzi in 1991 (Seidler et al.

Whatever your level, snowshoe rambles are an ideal and enjoyable way to share special moments with family or friends in the heart of the Alps. These beautiful trails in the forest or in uncovered areas are accessible to everyone - on condition that you have adequate equipment, such as appropriate clothing and protection from the sun and snow. • The Alpine Club Library
206 The Alpine Club Library. The entire text of the second edition is revised, rearranged, and rewritten, and the authors have not only simplified the general plan of the guide, but, acting on the advice of the reviewers of the first edition, have added a number of new features, and at the same time have not increased the bulk of the volume. The plan of listing peaks alphabetically within their groups has been retained, and to each peak is added not only the altitude, but the rna p reference number and a key letter indicating its oceanic watershed. It has been considered undesirable to retain the earlier sectional sketch maps, and instead a general key-map has been included. A new feature, noticeably absent from the first edition, is an index of passes with appropriate textual references. A glance at the index of peaks reveals in italics how many mountains in the Rockies are but tenta tively named ; and it is to be hop~ed most emphatically that the decisions of the Geographic Board of Canada, in confirming or revising the suggestions of pioneer mountaineers, will be arrived at with more wisdom and appropriateness, and less regard for passing political fancy, than has been evinced in the recent past. • N. • A Historical Geography of Yosemite Valley Climbing Landscapes J
Journal of Historical Geography 32 (2006) 190e219 www.elsevier.com/locate/jhg Mapping adventure: a historical geography of Yosemite Valley climbing landscapes J. Taylor Departments of History and Geography, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, V5A 1S6 Abstract Climbing guidebooks are invaluable resources for examining how modern recreation has inscribed val- ues onto public landscapes. The history of rock climbing in Yosemite Valley is particularly instructive be- cause it was a principal location for modern rock climbing and influenced modern environmental thought. Examining climbing guidebooks for Yosemite Valley also reveals a cultural shift during the 1960s in how climbers represented themselves and their deeds. New trends in route descriptions and naming practices re- flected shifts in social mores, environmental conditions, and sporting behavior. Guidebooks produced since 1970 suggest a coarsening progression in sport and an altered community demography, yet these texts also illustrate how change reinforced climbing’s values and customs. Ó 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. Keywords: Yosemite; Guidebooks; History; Gender; Recreation In August 1933 a young San Francisco lawyer named Peter Starr hiked into the Sierra Nevada wilderness and disappeared. A huge search ensued, complete with elite climbing teams and the first ever use of airplanes in a Sierra search and rescue. Three weeks later another climber found Starr’s body on a ledge of the steep, previously unclimbed northeastern face of Michael Minaret. Peter Starr’s death rocked genteel California. News reports and polite society obsessed about him, but at the service Francis Farquhar, president of the Sierra Club, transformed Starr from victim to hero.
