NATIONAL NEWS

ONS Labour Market Statistics main points • The UK employment rate was estimated at a record high of 76.5%, 0.6 percentage points higher than a year earlier and 0.4 percentage points up on the previous quarter. • The UK unemployment rate was estimated at 3.8%, 0.2 percentage points lower than a year earlier and 0.1 percentage points lower than the previous quarter. • The UK economic inactivity rate was estimated at a record low of 20.5%, 0.4 percentage points lower than the previous year and 0.3 percentage points lower than the previous quarter. • There were an estimated 810,000 vacancies in the UK for November 2019 to January 2020; this is 7,000 more than the previous quarter but 50,000 fewer than a year earlier. Career path for Mental Health Nurses Skills for Health have confirmed the development of the Mental Health Nursing Competence and Career Framework - Working Across the Life Course which is expected to be finalised this month. This will help future and current Mental Health Nurses to progress their careers within various roles to aspire to Mental Health Director roles at Level 9.

Primark expansion plans Retailer Primark have announced plans to open 18 new stores across the country this year as part of its expansion plans. The company report rising profits at this time. Who works the longest hours? An interesting article in the Financial Times highlighting think tank report on how the UK's highest-paid workers spend the longest hours working. This has changed from previous history when it was the lower end of those the labour market who had to work a greater number of hours. Recruitment Agencies An article in Recruiters, the voice of the recruitment industry, which says that according to Sonovate (a recruitment tech support business), there were nearly 8,500 new recruitment agencies registered in 2019, with most located in Greater London and the South East. The South East business count for the overall number of recruitment agencies currently stands at 5,025 and in the South West 1,170.1 New resource from Amazing Apprenticeships A new resource has become available from Amazing Apprenticeships in the form of flash cards. The A – Z of Apprenticeship Women at Work. This features inspirational female apprentices and their employers in a wide range of industries and is designed to inspire more women to undertake apprenticeships. The resource can either by downloaded or requested as a pack after the completion of a short survey. The February Parents Pack from Amazing Apprenticeships is also now available. Facebook to create 1,000 jobs in London Facebook have announced they are to create 1,000 new jobs in London. More than half of the new jobs will be technology-focused, with roles in software engineering, product design and data science, the company said. Young people’s career aspirations – disparity report The BBC report on the disparity between youth career aspirations and the reality of careers available to them. The report, based on 7,000 teenagers, reveals that 15.6% of 17 – 18-year olds aspire to work in the Art and Culture, Entertainment and Sports industry against a projected demand of 3.3%. Of those surveyed almost 51% were not interested in working in any other sectors. In contrast only 1.5% of students expressed an interest in working in the Hospitality sector against a 9.7% need in the economy. Similarly, the Wholesale and Retail sector has a requirement of 15.1% against only 2.6% showing an interest. The report highlights the need to challenge young people's perceptions and provide them with good careers information with robust labour market information which reflects the needs of the economy.

Morrisons restructure to create shop floor jobs Morrisons will see 7,000 new hourly-paid 'market street' roles created but 3,000 managerial roles lost as part of their restructure. Resources for Careers Practitioners in Schools The BBC have published a set of short films exploring different approaches to embedding careers support into schools. 2020 Emerging Jobs Report Linked in have published an Emerging Jobs report which unsurprisingly depicts that the current trend is dominated by Technology based businesses. Other sectors, however, such as Human Resources, Marketing, Aviation and Aerospace, Higher Education and Research appear in the top ten. Artificial Intelligence Specialists, Data Protection Officers and Robotics Engineers are the top three emerging jobs within the UK and the full list is shown below. An apprenticeship with B & Q B & Q have a target of 1,100 people taking part in an apprenticeship by May this year. The store offers many different apprenticeships including business management and leadership, legal, finance, HR and IT. Rate my apprenticeship 2019/20 Rate my apprenticeship’s top 100 employers and top 50 training providers are available here. A career in Construction Between Monday 16th and Sat 21st March 2020, construction sites nationwide will open up to allow young people ages 11 and up to visit a working site. The aim is to provide young people with a safe insight into construction. It may also be possible for adults to take advantage of the opportunity too. Higher Education There were two sets of data released by HESA in January. One is the first release of the data for the 2018/19 academic year and provides the numbers on what courses

and subjects were studied, the characteristics of the students and the qualifications achieved. The other describes the teaching workforce. Headlines are:

• The total number of HE students stood at 2,383,970 in 2018/19, an increase of 2% from 2017/18. • Business & Administrative studies, Social Studies and Biological Sciences rose in popularity for first year undergraduate students from 2017/18 to 2018/19 with Business & Administrative studies seeing the highest increase in students enrolled • There were 439,955 staff (excluding atypical staff - e.g. short term) employed in the HE sector which shows an increase of 2% from 429,560 on 1 December 2017 • HE staff employed on academic contracts made up 49% of the population. This percentage has remained the same since 2013/14. Help with disclosure Unlock have released a new web tool which enables those with convictions to calculate when they become 'spent' and no longer need to be disclosed. There is also a step-by-step video which helps with its use. The Hardman Directory App

The Hardman Directory App is available via Google Play or the App Store and is an invaluable resource to direct ex-offenders to for a directory of services which includes information on money matters including grants or loans, as well as mentoring, employment or volunteering opportunities and a range of other advice.

Wetherspoons expansion plans Food chain Wetherspoons have announced plans to create 10,000 jobs over the next four years with plans to open 15 to 20 new pubs this year as well as longer term plans for more pubs and hotels. The focus, say Wetherspoons, will be on smaller towns and cities. Stonewall’s top 100 LGBT Employers Business Live have listed the top 100 LGBT employers in Bristol as named by Stonewall. Many of these companies such as Barclays Bank and Sainsburys have branches across the UK.

Underwater Engineering Career recruitment drive The BBC report on a great opportunity for those interested in an underwater engineering career and are prepared to travel. Subsea UK have announced a recruitment drive of almost 9,000 people over the next three years. Most of the jobs, however, will be based in Scotland or the North East.

Social Mobility Barometer

A social mobility barometer looking at people’s attitudes to social mobility has been published by The Social Mobility Commission. Interestingly, in general, respondents feel that apprenticeships are the best route to progression within all age-groups but are highest at 32% by school leavers.

Which employers had the most online vacancies in the UK in 2019?2 (no link) The NHS had an amazing 305,006 online job vacancies advertised across the UK in 2019. There are over 400 job titles within the NHS and the top vacancy was for Staff Nurses with 16,931 vacancies. Which other employers came in the top 16 for 2019?

Fresh Group Limited and Tesco PLC were the next employers with the most vacancies across the UK last year.

Where to study – new data report The Department of Education have released new data which enables students to make choices of where to study based upon potential future earnings. Update on T Levels

Students will be able to study the first three T Levels, in Design, Surveying and Planning, Digital Production, Design and Development, and Education, from this September, with a further seven including three in health and science taught from 2021. A further eight T Levels including Legal, Accounting, and Manufacturing, Processing and Control will be available from 2022, in addition to the 10 T Levels that will already be on offer from 2020 and 2021. The remaining seven T levels, including courses in Agriculture, Environment and Animal Care, Catering and Hospitality, Creative and Media, and Hair and Beauty, will commence in from 2023, bringing the total to 25.

Disneyland Paris expansion A large recruitment drive is underway to fill 1,000 permanent and 7,000 temporary roles within engineering, architecture and managers as the park is extended. The Graduate Market 2020 The Annual Review by High Fliers of Graduate Salaries and Vacancies from leading employers has been published. It includes a list of the Times 100 Top Graduate Employers.

REGIONAL NEWS

Regional Labour Market Information – main points • For the three months ending December 2019, the highest employment rate estimate in the UK was in the South West (80.1%) • For the three months ending December 2019, the lowest economic inactivity rate estimate was in the UK South East (17.4%) • Between June and September 2019, the largest estimated increase in workforce jobs in the UK was in the South West at 42,000, while the largest decrease was in the South East at 51,000 • In September 2019, the region with the highest estimated proportion of workforce jobs in the services sector was London at 91.8%

Skills Shortages in the UK 2019/20 Produced by HECSU Prospects and AGCAS, the latest report is now available to download. The report identifies the key industries and occupations facing skills shortages and looks at why so many vacancies are proving so hard to fill.

The South East has a strong graduate labour market and it is attractive to workers from around the country and so there are not too many significant occupational shortages. It does, however, have the largest number of shortages in the UK in each of the top four occupations on the list: Nursing, IT support, Insurance and Housing. UK shortages of IT support and insurance professionals are particularly concentrated in the region. Shortages include: • Nurses • IT user support technicians • Insurance underwriters • Welfare and housing associate professionals n.e.c. • Programmers and software development professionals • Human resources and industrial relations officers • Chartered and certified accountants • Teaching and other educational professionals n.e.c. • Sports coaches, instructors and officials • Restaurant and catering establishment managers and proprietors • Marketing associate professionals • Youth and community workers • Information technology and telecommunications professionals • Web design and development professionals • Chartered surveyors

The South West region has a fairly small graduate labour market but has a serious shortage of solicitors and legal professionals. Shortages include:

• Nurses • Solicitors and Legal associate professionals • Medical practitioners • Programmers and software development professionals • Business and financial project management professionals • Marketing associate professionals • Veterinarians • Sales accounts and business development managers • Managers and directors in retail and wholesale • Teaching and other educational professionals n.e.c. • Sports coaches, instructors and officials

South West economy working together to provide clean economic benefit

The Energy sector is certainly one for consideration for those deciding on a future career path based in the South West. 190,000 new jobs could be created over the next 15 years with a powerful coalition between the 'Great South West partners' which includes businesses, education leaders, local authorities and the LEPs to

make the South West the cleanest economy in Britain. The focus is on 'green and blue’ economies and, working with the government, the aim is for the area to be the first net zero carbon region of England. A growth prospectus has been published which aims to deliver £45 billion of economic benefit. The National Grid have published figures which indicate a need for 43,900 jobs within the energy sector in South West to meet the net zero emissions target by 2050 for projects such as the Hinkley Seabank Connection. Nationally 400,000 jobs will need to be filled with opportunities for skilled tradespeople, engineers and other specialists.

Economic outlook – London leads the way

Business Live reports that London stood out in terms of job creation and growth of the economy in December, although many of the UK's regions started 2020 with a better outlook with the South West seeing rises in workforce numbers. In South East overall performance was affected by the manufacturing sector but a more positive outlook is expected for new business in the region for the coming year.

Seafood Processor Falfish expansion

Thanks to support from the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP Seafood Processor Falfish has been able to grow and create new jobs. Falfish is based in Redruth and will now invest in cold storage facilities creating 17 jobs in doing so.

Bursaries available to study Digital and Information Technology

I Am Digital has launched a new scheme which offers ten bursaries of £1k each to Cornish students wishing to study digital and information technologies.

RAC recruitment of Sales Reps

The RAC are recruiting Sales Reps in Penzance, Truro, St Austell and Redruth. The deadline to apply is 30th March.

A large store in Torquay has closed its doors. H & M is a big loss for Torquay, but it is available for let for retail use.

Foreign Manufacturers incentivized to locate businesses in Torbay

Business Live reports that foreign SMEs are being offered funding to relocate to Torbay. The area is known for its manufacturing industry and the industry is to be encouraged to grow further with financial incentives to relocate all or partially to the area.

Focus on Plymouth’s creative sector

Focus is being placed on the creative industries within Plymouth with the iMayflower project which aims to identify five tech firms which will receive funding to grow their companies and create jobs. The aim is to create around 156 full-time direct jobs, 191 indirect full-time jobs as well as support businesses and deliver courses with accreditation.

DORSET, BOURNEMOUTH AND POOLE

Sunseeker seeks boatbuilding apprentices Sunseeker International, based in Poole, are seeking 40 apprentice boat builders. This is a great opportunity to learn a trade, but applications are only being taken until March 15th at sunseeker.com/recruitment. 111 Call Centre staff required The running of Dorset's NHS 111 urgent care service, which has been run in St Leonards by the ambulance service (SWAST) is to be taken over by Dorset Healthcare University Foundation Trust. Despite 200 staff being employed SWAST had difficulty covering shifts with call takers and clinical supervisors and Dorset Healthcare are 'taking steps to improve recruiting'. Children’s home could create ten jobs in Romsey

Childcare Agency Chances Gives Choices have applied to Test Valley Borough Council to set up a children's home in Awbridge. If this application gets the green light it will create ten jobs.

Cruise refurbishing company to increase number of employees

Trimline, a Southampton-based company which refurbishes cruise liners and ferries is looking to recruit more people to increase its staff count by 15 per cent. The cruise industry is booming at this time and 127 new liners are due to be built between now and 2027.

Jobs on the rise in Portsmouth and Southampton

CV Library report that Portsmouth had an 11 per cent rise in jobs ads in 2019 compared to 2018, beating Southampton at 8.3%. Southampton also saw an 8.7% rise in applications. Southampton has also been named as one of the best places for entrepreneurs to start or grow their businesses.

SOMERSET

Bridgwater company expansion Toolstation, which is headquartered in Bridgwater, Somerset, has recently opened its 400th store in Balham, South West London. The company is one to watch as it opened 67 branches last year and created 800 new jobs. There are a further 60 branches due to open in 2020.

New business park for Highbridge

A new business park is being built in Highbridge, Somerset offering a variety of uses. The site will be easily accessible from the A38.

Yeovil’s new Aldi store

The new Aldi store for Yeovil will open in May. 40 jobs have been created as a result of this build.

SURREY

Longcross Enterprise Zone A 10-acre site at Longcross Park near Chertsey, Surrey will be developed into a purpose-built data centre campus by Ark Data Centres. The campus will form part of the Enterprise Zone (EZ3) for which construction is underway for 1,700 homes and a new school. The build will include a glass fronted discovery building, due for completion this summer, which will hold its own delicatessen, bakery and coffee shop to service the two floors of office accommodation. Longcross is one of three sites which form part of the EZ3, the other locations being Basingstoke and Whitehall and Bordon.

WEST SUSSEX, BRIGHTON AND HOVE

New STEM build for College will gain a new STEM building to complement all subjects taught across the college and support the skills shortages in the Engineering, Construction and IT industries. The new build will be open to students from January next year. New restaurant for Crawley Wagamama is set to open a branch of its restaurant in the Spring or Summer at Crawley Leisure Park.

The Games Industry benefits Horsham and Crawley’s economy Guildford and Aldershot are well-known for their growth within the Games industry within the region but the Crawley Observer report that Horsham and Crawley are also one of the areas outside of London in which the industry generates a large income to their local economy according to a report created by. ‘Think Global, Create Local’ a report created by the Association of UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE). For more information on the games industry demographics click here. Iceland café for Crawley Iceland are launching cafes across the UK and one will be opening in Crawley in April. Crawley Jobs Fair (no link) Employ Crawley is holding its annual jobs fair on 5th March in Crawley Library from 10.00 am until 3.00 pm.

In addition to meeting local employers and finding out about job vacancies and training opportunities, attendees can find out how they can become part of the Gatwick One Destination Employability Course for those interested in working at the airport.

Coast to Capital (no link) Crawley’s Queensway Regeneration Programme Coast to Capital have announced the completion of Phase two of Crawley's Town Centre Regeneration Programme. The redevelopment of Queensway is expected to encourage new investment. Cards Direct has already opened bringing nine new jobs to the area. Crawley Growth Programme, the £2.2million scheme was funded by Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership.

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP Thanks to funding from Cornwall and Isles of Scilly LEP a new workspace which could generate 40 non-seasonal jobs across three business units is to be created.
