Howard Kaye is the President of Howard Kaye Insurance Agency, where he shows his clients how life insurance allows you to give back; to your heirs and to charity. In 2009, Howard arranged for 33 surviving passengers of the Jewish refugee ship, SS St. Louis, to reunite in Miami Beach to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the voyage. He presented Senate Resolution 111 to Richard Hunt, a director at the National Archives. The Resolution was signed by all 33 passengers and now resides in the Treasures Vault of National Archives in the same casings as the George Washington Inaugural Address. Howard is very pleased to be a title sponsor of The False Witness presentation and to be reunited with the delegation of SS St. Louis passengers that are participating in this program. Dr. Steven Melman & Phyllis M elman. Dr. Steven Melman and Phyllis Melman have been residents of Boca Raton since 2005. Both Steve and Phyllis are on the board of many charitable organizations. They are the Executive Producers of COMPLICIT, a documentary film, which tells the saga of the Jewish refugee ship SS St. Louis. The film has been touring the US and internationally for the last 5 years. Steve and Phyllis are very pleased to be a title sponsor of The False Witness presentation and to be reunited with the delegation of SS St. Louis passengers that are participating in this program. Edith Stein - Boca Raton, FL: Edith is a graduate of Birch College in New York City. She has been active in Hadassah, the national women’s committee, Brandeis University, and she is also proud to be a ruby lion of Judah. She is a supporter of the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, SOS Children’s Village, The Theatre Lab at FAU, Temple Bethel, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, and she serves on the board of directors of the Tri-County Animal Rescue. Together, Edith & Martin dedicated the Edith & Martin Stein Assisted Living Facility, the Stein Hospice Facility, and the Edith & Martin Stein Building of Hope, all in New Jersey. Remaining loyal to the memory of her husband, and to her home state of New Jersey, Edith continues to support the Jewish Federation of Middlesex County, Temple Emanuel, Embrace Kids Foundation, and Jewish Family & Vocational Services of Middlesex county, among others. Edith discovered a love for the works of artist Theresa Bernstein and, together with her husband, they became major collectors of Bernstein’s works. Selections from the collection have been loaned for exhibitions across the US, including a major exhibition in 2013 at the galleries at Edith’s alma-mater, at which she was honored for her life’s work. Edith also has a deep love for traveling and animals, especially her Yorkshire terrier Lily. 6 The Surviving P assengers of the Steamship St. L ouis J udith Ste el - Kew Gardens, NY: As a child, Steel evaded Nazi persecution in Germany when a French Catholic family took her into their home—an experience that informed her view that love does not always fit within the neat confines of religion. She was the cantor at the New Synagogue in Manhattan. She attended the 2009 70th Anniversary St. Louis passengers reunion in Miami Beach and signed Senate Resolution 111 which was accepted into the Treasures Vault of the National Archives. Senate Resolution 111 was passed unanimously in May, 2009 and acknowledged the importance of learning the lessons of the saga of the St. Louis. Judith appears in the documentary film, COMPLICIT, which has been touring the US and internationally since 2014. Judith, together with Sonja Geismar and Eva Wiener, participated in Canada’s apology ceremony in November, 2018 where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the passengers in the House of Commons and offered his heartfelt apology for Canada’s refusal to grant safe haven to the passengers aboard the SS St. Louis Sonja Geismar - Bronx, NY: In May 1939, Sonja’s parents, paternal grandparents, two great aunts, and another great aunt with her husband were passengers on the St. Louis. In Havana harbor, she remembers the tenders and waving to cousins who came to see their grandparents who unfortunately went to Belgium and met their fate in a gas chamber. 7 Sonja and her parents went to England and when their quota numbers were reached, they sailed into New York harbor on February 11, 1940 and the Statue of Liberty came into view. Sonja became a high school social studies teacher. Years later she changed the direction of her career by returning to graduate school for her second Master’s degree. She became a high school librarian in an inner city school and after ten years became head librarian. Sonja together with Eva Wiener, participated in the mission to Jerusalem where they told their stories at the Knesset, Yad Vashem and Hebrew University.

  • Henry Ford and 'The International Jew': His Century-Old Anti
Headline: Henry Ford and ‘The International Jew’: His Century-old Anti- Semitism Thrives in the 21st Century Source: The Dearborn Historian, Fall Issue, 2018 What: This is four pages of an 16-page article I wrote for the current issue of the Dearborn Historical Museum’s quarterly magazine, which I edit. Context: One hundred years ago this month, Henry Ford – Dearborn’s favorite son -- bought a weekly paper in Dearborn, used it to attack Jews. He turned the content into widely circulated books, which continue to sow hatred online today. There is no online aspect to The Historian. It’s like it’s 1990. Four pages By BILL McGRAW Henry Ford was peaking as a global celebrity at the conclusion of World War I, having introduced the $5 workday, assembly line and Model T -- revolutionary changes that transformed the way people lived. Reporters staked out the gates of his Fair Lane mansion. Ford loved the limelight and he constantly made news, even running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan as a Democrat in 1918. He narrowly lost. In the midst of his fame, Ford became a media mogul of sorts, forming the Dearborn Publishing Company and purchasing the sleepy Dearborn Independent weekly newspaper, which was dying of red ink. He published the paper under his name for the first time 100 years ago, in January 1919. Under Ford, the Independent became notorious for its unprecedented attacks on Jews. But Ford’s anti-Semitism traveled far beyond the Dearborn borders. Showing the marketing expertise that had catapulted Ford Motor into one of the world’s most famous brands, Henry Ford’s lieutenants vastly widened the reach of his attacks by packaging the paper’s anti-Semitic content into four books.

  • American Christianity, Jews and Israel
Yaakov Ariel American Christianity,Jews and Israel: Antisemitism and Faith “No one is born hatinganother person because of the colorofhis skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love. Forlovecomes morenaturallytothe human heart than its opposite.” Nelson Mandela¹ Introduction On August 11–12,2017, armed whitesupremacists, white nationalists, neo-Con- federates,Klansmen, neo-Nazis, and other racist and antisemitic groups marched in Charlottesville,Virginia. CarryingNazi-likebanners, chanting an- tisemitic, as well as anti-Muslim and anti-black slogans, they clashed violently with counter demonstrators.² The magnitude of the event, its militancy, and the venom it unleashedagainst Jews and others shocked manyAmericans, who had viewed such groups as fringe, small, and lacking in influenceand im- portance. Since the 1960s, and even more so the 1980s, American writers and ac- tivists thought that White Christian antisemitic groups have weakened and de- clined, moving into the shadows, having lost their legitimacy and much of their base of support.³ This, they now discovered, was not quite true.⁴ Racist,vir- ulentlyantisemitic Christian groups have not takenoverAmericansociety, and they weakened since theirheydayinthe 1920sand 1930s. Faculty Advisor: Walter Licht This paper is posted at ScholarlyCommons. https://repository.upenn.edu/hist_honors/17 For more information, please contact [email protected]. The Silent Partner: How the Ford Motor Company Became an Arsenal of Nazism Abstract Corporate responsibility is a popular buzzword in the news today, but the concept itself is hardly novel. In response to a barrage of public criticism, the Ford Motor Company commissioned and published a study of its own activities immediately before and during WWII. The study explores the multifaceted and complicated relationship between the American parent company in Dearborn and the German subsidiary in Cologne. The report's findings, however, are largely inconclusive and in some cases, dangerously misleading. This thesis will seek to establish how, with the consent of Dearborn, the German Ford company became an arsenal for Hitler's march on Europe. This thesis will clarify these murky relationships, and picking up where the Ford internal investigation left off, place them within a framework of corporate accountability and complicity.

  • The Dearborn Independent Collection, 1926-1927
THE DEARBORN INDEPENDENT COLLECTION, 1926-1927 (Small Collections--Publications) 2 folders ABSTRACT Henry Ford purchased his relatively small hometown newspaper, The Dearborn Independent, in 1918. He added “Chronicler of Neglected Truth” to the magazine’s name. By May 1920, Ford was using the publication to promote his anti-Semitic, anti- immigrant, and anti-labor union beliefs. His paper circulated widely, since it was sold by subscription, available in Ford dealerships across the country, and because anything related to Ford was newsworthy. He eventually published his articles and essays in a book called “The International Jew: The World’s Foremost Problem.” The paper reached its peak circulation of around 700,000 readers in the mid-1920s, amidst increased Ku Klux Klan membership and discriminatory immigration policies throughout America. Publication of The Dearborn Independent was halted in 1927, following a defamation lawsuit filed against Ford by Aaron Sapiro, a Jewish lawyer and farm cooperative organizer. Ford refused responsibility for the articles, but with the ensuing bad publicity from the lawsuit, settled privately and issued a public apology. The final issue of the periodical was published on December 31, 1927. This collection includes publications. ACCESS This collection is open to the public without restriction. • Perceptions That Jews Have Too Much Power and Game Theory
Critical Thinking Assignment: Jews perceived to have too much Power & Game Theory The explanation of ideology and extracts on anti-Semitism below, along with the notes for lectures 10 and 11, will help to answer the following question: What is the common ideological impetus behind Jews being blamed for the Black Death (1348-1351), “Harvard’s Jewish problem” (1922), Henry Ford’s critique of Jews in the Dearborn Independent (1920-21), the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion, and the Jewish “Doctor’s Plot” of 1953? What were the obstacles to assessing the evidence that would disconfirm the storylines (generally arguing that Jews had too much power) in each of these situations? How does game theory help to explain why Jews were viewed as a threat then and why they are viewed differently today in the U.S. and Europe? What is “ideology?” Although there are several competing definitions, ideologies commonly refer to systems of ideas that legitimate claims to propriety, power, or privilege (Domhoff, 1983; Sartori, 1969). As such, ideologies are indispensable and ubiquitous, underlying and guiding all aspects of human endeavor. They are cognitive maps that simplify “a reality too huge and complicated to be comprehended, evaluated, and dealt with in any purely factual, scientific, or other disinterested way” (Higgs, 1987, pp. 37-38). In bestowing legitimacy to a position or vantage point where there may be conflicting interests, ideologies typically provide justification for “what is good, who gets what, and who rules” (Hinich & Munger, 1994, p. 11). This justification is inevitably imbued with moral and ethical judgments (North, 1981; Lodge, 1976).

The Rise of Antisemitism in the United States and Beyond Gerald J. Steinacher University of Nebraska-Lincoln The very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world. Lies will pass into history. George Orwell Introduction Antisemitism, the negative stereotyping and hatred of Jews, has over- shadowed Western history for 2000 years. In the 20th century, anti- semitism led to the Shoah, the systematic state-sponsored murder of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany and its allies. In recent decades, anti- semitism diminished significantly in the Western world, and there was hope that this plague would soon be consigned to the past. On the con- trary, the past few years have witnessed a drastic increase of antisem- itism in Western societies, often paired with far-right activism, rac- ism, and xenophobia. In 2017 in Charlottesville, there were hundreds of marchers giving Nazi salutes, waving swastika flags, and shouting “white lives matter!,” “Sieg Heil,” and “Jews will not replace US.”1 One Published as Chapter 7 in History in a Post-Truth World: Theory and Praxis, edited by Mar- ius Gudonis and Benjamin T.
